PURE, Arvalais – France.
The purpose of this tool is to provide information on the production of wheat without pesticides or fertilizer. The tool suggests crop rotation, timing of seeding and mechanical weed control as solutions to weed management . The target group of the tool is for farmers and crop advisors working in wheat based systems. This tool is for organic producers but may also be used for conventional production as well. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) under the grant agreement n°265865

Choosing cover crops for arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Casagrande, Marion; Fontaine, Laurence.
The tools aim at highlighting the main technical challenges as well as the ways and means of reflection, which can improve the understanding and the implementation of direct sowing into vegetal cover in organic agriculture. Practical recommendation First step: Determining the constraints Considering constraints with regard to suitability of cover crops helps to narrow the number of potential plant species. A first selection refers to the main crops, the intercropping period, dates of sowing and the soil type. Second step: Ranging objectives In a second step, applicable objectives are selected from a proposed list. The species that are best suited to meet the objectives are selected. Third step: Adapting cover crop management In a third step, the...

Diverse fertility building leys in arable rotations Organic Eprints
Bliss, Katie; Measures, Mark.
The results of a three year study in the UK suggest that there are several advantages to more complex mixtures; • Greater resilience to variable conditions • Combine early and late weed suppression • Slower decomposition on incorporation • Extends forage availability for key insect pollinators • Generally achieve higher forage yields • Potential for higher subsequent crop yields. Practical recommendation • There are a number of plant characteristics that have an impact on nitrogen release and mobilisation, namely C:N ratio, lignin and polyphenol content which result in slower N release and lower N losses or better N utilisation. • Including grass species in the mix takes up the N fixed by the legumes and reduces the free N in the soil; the...

Efecto del laboreo mínimo (chisel), la fertilización y los abonos verdes sobre la flora arvense y los rendimientos en una rotación de cultivos de cereales y leguminosas ecológicos Organic Eprints
Chamorro, Lourdes; Baldivieso-Freitas, P.; Blanco-Moreno, José Manuel; Armengot, Laura; Sans, F. Xavier.
Effects of reduced tillage, fertilization and green manures on the weeds and crop yields in a cereal-legume crop rotation under organic farming. On 2011, we established a long-term experiment to evaluate the effects of reduced tillage (chisel vs mouldboard plough), fertilization with semicomposted manure and sowing of green manures before spring crops, on the crop yields and weed abundance in a 5-year rotation (spelt, chickpea, wheat, lentil and spelt). After five years, there was not noticeable increment in weed abundance or richness. Reduced tillage caused a significant increase of weeds compared with mouldboard plough, but it this increase did not cause significant yield loss in cereal crops compared with mouldboard plough. Green manures exerted a...

Knowledge exchange platform for agroecology Organic Eprints
It offers videos, dossier and short info-sheets reporting practical farmers experiences. At today, for arable crops, it includes a dossiers on direct-drilling in crop residues or living mulches, a dossier on crop association (companion planting) with several details on how to do it in practices and what still needs to be fixed in order to be successful in certain situations, and a dossier on biological control as a tool to manage habitats. The language of the platform is very direct and it is easy and fast to use. The platform is a dynamic tool so further material will probably be added in the future.

Næringsstofdynamik i græsmarker med kløver og urter Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, Karin; Korsgaard, Maren.

Organic Small Grain Production Organic Eprints
Tallman, Susan.
This webinar presents information about managing nutrients and pests in organic small grain production. Nutrient management using crop rotations, cover crops, and approved organic fertilizers is discussed. A pest management hierarchy approached is also presented. The presenter explains that pest management is best achieved by building on a base of prevention practices, such as crop rotation and sanitation. A series of “many little hammers” is described as being the best approach to pest management in an organic system. The webinar is targeted both to newcomers and experienced organic farmers. Webinar contents are based on experiences made in the United States but concepts and hints can be applied in other countries.
