Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic variability for the synthesis of bioactive compounds and minerals in pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) landraces. Total phenolic compounds, carotenoids, antioxidant activity and minerals were evaluated in 10 accessions of Cucurbita moschata landraces from the Genebank of Embrapa Temperate Agriculture (Pelotas - RS, Brazil). Twenty plants of each accession were cultivated in the field during the spring/summer of 2013/2014. After harvesting of mature fruits, the seeds were discarded and opposite longitudinal portions of the pulp were manually prepared for analysis of the bioactive compounds. Desarrollo de un sistema de riego automatizado en tiempo real con base en balance hídrico climático, medición de humedad del suelo y lisímetro Colegio de Postgraduados

Se desarrollo un sistema de riego automatizado en tiempo real, para determinar y controlar el momento oportuno y la cantidad de riego, monitoreado por medio de las tecnologías de información (TI). El estudio se realizó en los terrenos adjuntos a la estación meteorológica del Colegio de Postgraduados del Campus Montecillo, del 10 de junio al 11 de septiembre del 2006. El sistema se integró de un programa de cómputo en el lenguaje de programación Edlog y un dispositivo de control por medio de un datalogger modelo CR10X de la compañía Campbell Scientific. Abstract In this study the effects of zein film coating along with benzoic acid on the quality of sliced pumpkin samples, which were packaged with different techniques were investigated. The samples were allocated into different groups and were treated with different processes. Following processing, the samples were stored at +4 °C for twenty days. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses were carried out on the samples once every five days during the storage period. According to color analysis, the L* value was observed to have significantly decreased in the processed and packaged samples in comparison with the control group. Moisture desorption isotherms of fresh and heat blanched pumpkins (Cucurbita moschata) were determined at three temperatures (30, 50 and 70 °C), using the standard, static-gravimetric method. The GAB, Oswin, BET, Halsey, and Henderson models were tested and, with the exception of the Henderson model, showed satisfactory fits to the experimental data. The GAB model was used to analyze the fitting ability to describe the isotherm type. The shape of the desorption isotherms of fresh and blanched pumpkin at 30 and 50 °C was intermediate to types II and III, and at 70 °C it was of type II for the blanched pumpkin and close to type II for the fresh sample. The tropical pumpkins Cucurbita moschata Duchesne and C. argyrosperma Huber are often found growing together. Both C. argyrosperma subsp. argyrosperma (the domesticated cushaw squash) and the wild species C. argyrosperma subsp. sororia (L.H. Bailey) Merrick & Bates are found together in Central America. Several reports indicate that plants displaying a phenotype combining traits of both species occur, suggesting gene flow between species. Reverse-stripe phenotypes in Cucurbita pepo National Institute of Agronomic Research

Longitudinal striping is a common fruit color pattern in squash, pumpkins, and gourds of Cucurbita pepo, but cultigens can exhibit different kinds of fruit striping. Often, the stripes are broad and contiguous, but in some cases they are narrow and non-contiguous (“broken”) or, much more rarely, they can have an irregular distribution. These three striping phenotypes have been described and compared, and have been found to be under the control of alleles at the l-1 locus. Ordinarily, dark stripes appear between the 10 main subepidermal vascular tracts with the background color covering the rest of the fruit.
