Characterization of Cr. gigas oysters mortalities according to the French Ifremer/REMORA monitoring network ; with complements from phytoplankton and meteorogolical data ArchiMer

The wide range of data from the French Ifremer/REMORA network, collected since 1993 allow a global characterization of mortalities of 1-year old and 2-years old cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, that are cultivated in the main French oyster areas (Fleury et al, 2003), and thus a better understanding of the causes of these mortalities (Ifremer /MOREST project). The average annual mortalities on intertidal sites range from 10 to 20%. Most of the mortalities take place in Spring and Summer. 1-year oyster mortalities occur in Marennes and several sites in Brittany whilst 2-years oyster mortalities occur in the same sites and in baie des Veys (Normandy). In addition, 2-years oyster mortalities appear more variable according to different annual surveys....

Based on a four years survey of Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas growth in the main shellfish farming areas of Brittany from 1989 to 1992, this report is a first attempt to explain the differences between sites and years. The determinist growth models do not suit to this objective, for methodological and practical reasons. Nevertheless, they provide the conceptual basis of a global model by identifying the reliable environmental parameters for a statistical explanation of growth results. In order to find the global parameters which could explain the growth of Pacific Oyster Crassosrrea gigas. a survey of Pacific Oyster's growth has been done in Brittany from 1990 to 1995 and in France from 1993 to 1995. The analysis shows the positive influence of rain amount on weight grov,th except in eutrophic areas where it is the contrary. It also shows the positive influence of temperature provided it stays within an optimal range. statistically defined. Some characteristics of the production areas have been reviewed without achieving clear explanation of growth differences between sites. The network IFREMER/REMORA has watched every year, since 1993, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster class-size ("juveniles" of the first-year c1ass and "adults" of the second year c1ass), distributed among various stations of the French oyster areas. This has provided a quite standard and simple annual assessment of the rearing results, generally tallied with professional observations. From year to year, data series have been obtained, from which mean values (references), chronological trends or spatial differences can be analysed. Le réseau régional REMONOR est un dispositif d’observation des performances annuelles de mortalité, croissance et qualité des huîtres creuses. Le protocole s’attache à surveiller des individus de deux classes d’âge (« adultes » = 2 ans et « juvéniles » = 1 an) réparties entre différentes stations dans les principaux secteurs ostréicoles normands. At the end of its third year, the regional network for monitoring REMONOR, confirms the particularities of oyster from Normandy in matter of growth and quality. Results from 2 000 are globally very close of those from 1998. Mortality of adults reached 14% and juvenile 6% which represent a low death rate. For this year the most blow area is the Baie des Veys with 31% death rate at Géfosse. Observed growth this year had been weaker than the past two years despite the spring and automnal growth. At spring, the higher recorded growth rate on the West coast with 0.42% (regional average : 0.29%). This seasonal trend seems more and more obvious every year. The regional network REMONOR showed 2001's characteristics of growth and quality of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in the three rearing areas of Normandy. Compared to year 2000, two additional stations along the East Coast have been settled. The summer adults mortalities have been registered between 0 % and 25 %. The average for all the rearing areas reached 6 %. Highest rates have been noticed in the Baie des Veys and the East Coast. The juvenile's mortality occurred during the same season, in summer. This year 2001 is included in lower growth years in all Normandy. This year, the West Coast growth rate appeared to be quit unusual. The national REMORA network is targeted on the studies of growth, flesh quality and mortality of a sample of cupped oyster Crassostrea gigasdistributed on 9 stations along the coast of Normandy. As a better precision is needed for regional purpose, 7 new stations have been added. A total number of 16 stations is now sampled from Chausey to Meuvaines. Weak rates of mortality have been noticed in 2002 on both adults (7%) and spat (6 %). These rates are the weakest ever seen. The mortality rates in the Baie des veys were less than 10 %. The network named REMONOR (REseau MOllusqueNORmandie) aims to assess mortality, growth and tissue quality of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated in Normandy over an annual cycle. This local network relies on the same material and methods as the national one named REMORA (REseau Mollusques Ressources Aquacoles). The study was carried out in 17 sites, which were distributed in the four basins where oyster rearing occurs in Normandy (West and East coast of Cotentin, Baie des Veys and Meuvaines). In 2003, a new site was added, which was located in the area of Ver-Sur-Mer (Calvados). The results obtained in 2003 showed a low annual mortality for adults (8%) as well as for juveniles (10%).
