A central role for the nitrate transporter NRT2.1 in the integrated morphological and physiological responses of the root system to nitrogen limitation in Arabidopsis Inra

Up-regulation of the high-affinity transport system ( HATS) for NO3- and stimulation of lateral root (LR) growth are two important adaptive responses of the root system to nitrogen limitation. Up-regulation of the NO 3 2 HATS by nitrogen starvation is suppressed in the atnrt2.1-1 mutant of Arabidopsis ( Arabidopsis thaliana), deleted for both NRT2.1 and NRT2.2 nitrate transporter genes. We then used this mutant to determine whether lack of HATS stimulation affected the response of the root system architecture ( RSA) to low NO3- availability. In Wassilewskija (Ws) wild-type plants, transfer from high to low NO3- medium resulted in contrasting responses of RSA, depending on the level of nitrogen limitation. Driving competitive and facilitative interactions in oak dehesas through management practices Inra

Dehesas are extant multi-purpose agroforestry systems that consist of a mosaic of widely-spaced scattered oaks (Quercus ilex L.) combined with crops, pasture or shrubs. We aimed to clarify the role of trees in dehesas of CW Spain focussed on the analysis of tree-understorey interactions. Spatial variability of resources (light, soil moisture and fertility), microclimate, fine roots of both herbaceous plants and trees and forage yield was measured. Additionally, we compared the nutritional and physiological status, growth and acorn production of oaks in cropped (fodder crop), grazed (native grasses) and encroached (woody understorey) dehesa plots. Long-term effects of mild salt stress on growth, ion accumulation and superoxide dismutase expression of Arabidopsis rosette leaves Inra

Arabidopsis thaliana plants (wild-type accessions Col and N1438) were submitted to a prolonged, mild salt stress using two types of protocols. These protocols allowed salt-treated plants to absorb nutrients either through a part of their root system maintained in control medium (split-rooted plants) or during episodes on control medium alternating with salt application (salt alternation experiment). Full-salt treatments (salt applied continuously to whole root system) resulted in severe (but non-lethal) growth inhibition. This effect was partly alleviated in split-rooted plants on mixed salt–control medium and in plants submitted to salt–control medium alternation.
