A dynamic model of the Bay of Biscay pelagic fleet simulating fishing trip choice: the response to the closure of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) fishery in 2005 ArchiMer
Vermard, Youen; Marchal, Paul; Mahevas, Stephanie; Thebaud, Olivier.
The scope of this paper is to describe, evaluate, and forecast fishing trip choices of the Bay of Biscay pelagic fleet using random utility modeling (RUM). First, alternative fishing trip choices of this fleet were identified using multivariate statistical methods based on species landings weighted by value and defined as distinct fishing activity or fisheries (termed metiers). A RUM was specified, which included trip components as attributes during the period 20012004 ( a lagged percentage of the value per unit of effort of the main species caught, total value per unit of effort, and inertia in terms of changes from one metier to another). For the main metiers, the proportion of correct effort allocation is 90% during the calibration period of 2001-2004....

Comportement de pêche et gestion : l’exemple de la pêcherie pélagique du Golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Vermard, Youen.
In the current context of fisheries management, simulation models are required to support the evaluation of management scenarios. These models should include the key processes of the fishery system: stock dynamics, fleet dynamics, manager decision-making, and the interactions between these three elements. Most of the existing models have concentrated on the modeling of biological processes, population dynamics, and ecosystem interactions. However, a number of fisheries management failures could have resulted from a misunderstanding of fishers behavior rather than from limited knowledge of the status of fishery resources. It has for example been showed that in an exploited system, fishers’ spatial behavior influences the predicted outcomes of management...

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS: APPLICATION OF THE RANDOM UTILITY MODEL TO RECREATIONAL BENEFIT ASSESSMENT FOR THE MP&M EFFLUENT GUIDELINE AgEcon
Tudor, Lynne G.; Besedin, Elena Y.; Fisher, Michael; Smith, Stuart.
The present study focuses on a state-wide case study to evaluate recreational benefits from forthcoming effluent limitation guidelines for the Metal Products and Machinery Industry. The study combines water quality modeling and a random utility model to assess how changes in water quality from the regulation will affect consumer valuation of water resources. Based on preliminary results, the MP&M regulation has the potential to generate substantial recreational benefits in Ohio.

Welfare Measurement and Representative Consumer Theory AgEcon
Smith, V. Kerry; von Haefen, Roger H..
This paper generalizes results from Anderson, De Palma, and Thisse [1992] linking individual random utility and aggregate representative individual demand models, to consider a comparable relation for the willingness to pay functions for quality attributes of marketed goods. It also suggests how the logic can be used to describe links between choice occasion and aggregate models (across occasions) for an individual.
