An intercomparison study of the determination of sulfite in tropical shrimps by the West European Fish Technologists' Association (WEFTA) OMA

Eight WEFTA laboratories participated in two series of intercomparison exercises on sulfite determination in tropical shrimps. Samples of tropical shrimps were spiked with sodium metabisulfite (Na<sub>2</sub>S<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>) and hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) at a level of 25-90 mg SO<sub>2</sub>/kg. Most of the laboratories determined the sulfite content with (modified) methods of Monier-Williams or De Vries et al. The overall mean recovery of sulfite was rather low (47-60%), which may be attributed to an irreversible reaction of sulfite with the tropical shrimps. Apparent recovery of surface applied nitrogen fertilizer by a coastcross pasture. Repositório Alice

Nitrogen recoveries from fivel levels of urea and ammonium nitrate surface-applied on coastcross pasture, grown on a dark red lotosol (Hapludox), in Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil under tropical altitude climate, were estimated. Significant differences occurred within periods (P<0.05), depending on climatic conditions. Under adequate plant growth conditions, mean N recovery from urea was about 67%, sometimes reaching 80% of that from ammonium nitrate. Recovery of ammonium nitrate varied from 45 to 68% of applied N.

There is a wealth of literature on the design of ex post compensation mechanisms for natural disasters. However, more research needs to be done on the manner in which these mechanisms could steer citizens toward adopting individual-level preventive and protection measures in the face of flood risks. We have provided a comparative legal analysis of the financial compensation mechanisms following floods, be it through insurance, public funds, or a combination of both, with an empirical focus on Belgium, the Netherlands, England, and France. We investigated nematode assemblages inhabiting the 26-year-old track created by experimental deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules, and two adjacent, undisturbed sites, one with nodules and one without nodules. The aim was to compare density, assemblage structure, and diversity indices in order to assess the process of recovery of the nematode assemblage inhabiting the disturbed site. Defining viable recovery paths toward sustainable fisheries ArchiMer

This paper develops a formal analysis of the recovery process for a fishery, from crisis situations to desired levels of sustainable exploitation, using the theoretical framework of viable control. We define sustainability as a combination of biological, economic and social constraints which need to be met for a viable fishery to exist. Biological constraints are based on the definition of a minimum resource stock to be preserved. Economic constraints relate to the existence of a guaranteed profit per vessel. Social constraints refer to the maintenance of a minimum size of the fleet, and to the maximum speed at which fleet adjustment can take place. Disaster Preparation and Recovery: Lessons from Research on Resilience in Human Development Ecology and Society

Four decades of theory and research on resilience in human development have yielded informative lessons for planning disaster response and recovery. In developmental theory, resilience following disaster could take multiple forms, including stress resistance, recovery, and positive transformation. Empirical findings suggest that fundamental adaptive systems play a key role in the resilience of young people facing diverse threats, including attachment, agency, intelligence, behavior regulation systems, and social interactions with family, peers, school, and community systems. D-penicillamine (D-P) is a chelator drug which is used for treatment of lead toxicity for several years. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the efficacy of D-P in reducing the effects of lead on hematological indices. This study was done on 36 male adult, 6-8 weeks albino Wistar rats in Gorgan University of Medical Sciences. At first male adult rats were exposed to lead acetate in their drinking water. As quantificacoes dos agrotoxicos que atingem os alvos sao feitas com metodologias onerosas ou sofisticadas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar dois metodos para quantificar as deposicoes de agrotoxicos: um, por analise de gotas, e o outro, por analise quimica de tracador. As gotas de uma calda cuprica foram amostradas com papel sensivel a agua, lamina de microscopio recoberta com oxido de magnesio e cartoes de papel-filtro. [[abstract]]The growth of maize during soil water deficets and after water recovery in the vegetative stage was investigated for plants grown in pots under controlled -environment conditions. Soil water deticits were imposed by withholding water from daily irrigation and released by rewatering. It was found that plant height was significantly declined when soil water potential reached down to -2.5 bars, but it can be recovered in 4 weeks when water deficits were released at soil water potential as low as -10 bars. Long-term impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on deep-sea corals detected after seven years of monitoring ArchiMer

Cold-water corals form high biodiversity habitats in the deep sea. They are generally long-lived, slow-growing, and thus particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impact. We used high-definition imagery to quantify the impact and assess the recovery of deep-sea corals that were affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Over three hundred Paramuricea spp. colonies were imaged yearly between 2011 and 2017 at five sites, and the images were digitized to quantify health, hydroid overgrowth, identify branch loss, and track recovery patterns. In Iran, a large number of Rosa species have been exposed to extinction and therefore preservation techniques are necessary to safeguard their future. In the present investigation, the objectives were to optimize the micropropagation and medium-term conservation of one of these wild species, Rosa pulverulenta. The macrobenthic community structure of the Valli di Comacchio (northern Italy) was described in order to assess the ecological conditions of the main basins through 2001. Recovery probabilities of coral reef communities after Acanthaster planci infestation: a case study at Shabror umm gam'ar, Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt OceanDocs

Recovery patterns of coral reef benthic communities were estimated by linear extrapolation after Acanthaster planci outbreak of 1998 at Shabror Umm Gam'ar, Hurghada of the Egyptian Red Sea. The significance of using linear extrapolation was tested in a range of ten sites by comparison with the actual average yearly recovery rates. A total of 15 permanent transects, each is 10m long, were monitored at 10m and 12m depths in both Shabror Umm Gam’ar and the ten selected sites. The recovery rate estimated by linear extrapolation did not significantly differ from the recovery rate of stony corals in the ten selected sites. Re-oligotrophication trajectories of macrophyte assemblages in Mediterranean coastal lagoons based on 17-year time-series ArchiMer

Since the mid-20th century, Mediterranean lagoons have been affected by eutrophication, leading to significant changes in primary producers. In the early 2000s, management actions have been implemented to reduce nutrient inputs with the aim to achieve a good ecological status as requested by the EU water framework directive. As a result of these actions, a sharp decline in nutrient loads has been recorded in several lagoons leading to an oligotrophication of the water column.
