Bias in the prediction of genetic gain due to mass and half-sib selection in random mating populations Genet. Mol. Biol.

The prediction of gains from selection allows the comparison of breeding methods and selection strategies, although these estimates may be biased. The objective of this study was to investigate the extent of such bias in predicting genetic gain. For this, we simulated 10 cycles of a hypothetical breeding program that involved seven traits, three population classes, three experimental conditions and two breeding methods (mass and half-sib selection). Each combination of trait, population, heritability, method and cycle was repeated 10 times. The predicted gains were biased, even when the genetic parameters were estimated without error. O objetivo do trabalho foi comparar, por meio de simulação, as estimativas de componentes de variância produzidas pelos métodos ANOVA (análise da variância), ML (máxima verossimilhança), REML (máxima verossimilhança restrita) e MIVQUE(0) (estimador quadrático não viesado de variância mínima), no delineamento de blocos aumentados com tratamentos adicionais (progênies) de uma ou mais procedências (cruzamentos). Os resultados indicaram superioridade relativa do método MIVQUE(0). O método ANOVA, embora não tendencioso, apresentou as estimativas de menor precisão. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for agronomic traits and nutritional value in intraspecific hybrids of B. decumbens. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a performance e estimar ganhos de seleção de uma população de maturação tardia de Coffea canephora, variedade Conilon, no primeiro ciclo de seleção recorrente oriunda do programa de melhoramento genético do Instituto Capixaba de Pesquisa, Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (Incaper). Foram avaliados, independentemente, em Goianira (GO) e em Formoso do Araguaia (TO) dois grupos de materiais de arroz (Oryza sativa L.) irrigado, 164 precoces e 164 de ciclo medio, cada um em dois latices triplos, um 10 x 10 e outro 8 x 8. Desses, 162 eram familias S02 (oriundas de plantas S0 que sofreram duas autofecundacoes) extraidas das populacoes CNA-IRAT 4PR/1/1 e CNA-IRAT 4ME/1/1. O objetivo foi avaliar o potencial dessas populacoes para fins de melhoramento, por meio das estimativas de seus parametros geneticos e das respostas a selecao. Evaluation of aluminum resistance in hybrids of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. Repositório Alice

The objective of this work was to evaluate hybrids of Brachiaria decumbens for root vigor and aluminum resistance as components of edaphic adaptation. One hundred intraspecific hybrids and their parents were evaluated in a greenhouse solution-culture. Significant differences for both traits indicate that there is genetic variability amongst hybrids. The parents had a similar performance for root growth, but differed significantly for aluminum resistance. Twenty three and seven hybrids were superior to cv. Basilisk for root vigor and aluminum resistance, respectively, but most of them were not coincident for both traits. The methodology available for evaluating the cooking quality of dry beans is impractical for assessing a large number of progenies. The aims of this study were to propose a new strategy for evaluating cooking quality of grains and to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters using a selection index. A total of 256 progenies of the 13thcycle of a recurrent selection program were evaluated at three locations for yield, grain type, and cooked grains. Samples of grains from each progeny were placing in a cooker and the percentage of cooked grains was assessed. Knowledge of the association between characters is very important in the genetic breeding programs, but there is limited information about correlations between traits in maize landraces in the current literature. The objectives of this study were to estimate phenotypic, additive genetic and environment correlations among traits in maize landraces, which were cultivated in family farm systems, in order to guide the participatory breeding on maize landraces.
