15 years of research in organic food systems in Denmark – effects on the sector and society Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Halberg, Niels.
The Danish government has funded research in organic agriculture and food systematically since the establishment in 1996 of the Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming (DARCOF, now ICROFS, International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems). A recent analysis of the effects of the first 3 organic research programs (DARCOF I-III, 1996-2000) (Halberg et al. 2012) was carried out with the objective to determine not only the impact of the research on the sector from farmers and advisors to industry and retail but also on society from government and regulation to NGO’s.

A controversy re-visited: Is the coccinellid Adalia bipunctata adversely affected by Bt toxins? Organic Eprints
Hilbeck, Angelika; Mc Millan, Johanna M.; Meier, Matthias; Humbel, Anna; Schläpfer-Miller, Juanita; Trtikova, Miluse.
Background: In 2008/2009, Schmidt and colleagues published a study reporting lethal effects of the microbial Bt toxins Cry1Ab and Cry3Bb on the coccinellid biological control organisms Adalia bipunctata. Based on this study, in concert with over 30 other publications, Mon810 cultivation was banned in Germany in 2009. This triggered two commentaries and one experimental study all published in the journal ‘Transgenic Research’ that question the scientific basis of the German ban or claim to disprove the adverse effects of the Bt toxins on A. bipunctata reported by Schmidt and colleagues, respectively. This study was undertaken to investigate the underlying reasons for the different outcomes and rebuts the criticism voiced by the two other commentaries....

A critique of methodologies for the comparison of organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Lee, Howard; Fowler, Susan.
This paper was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). A review is presented of comparative studies of organic and conventional farming systems, with a special focus upon economic criteria. The different categories of comparison methodologies are critically reviewed. Conclusions are that classic experimentation has a valuable part to play but that more qualitative assessment can also be useful and should be encouraged. Careful allowance should be made for major background differences in management when comparing financial profitability. Longer term case studies, which try to monitor organic systems in their own right, should also be encouraged.

A cross-disciplinary approach to multicriteria assessment and communication of the effects of organic food systems Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
This paper describes a cross- and transdisciplinary approach to develop a multicriteria assessment framework that aims to help organic actors and stakeholders conduct, document and communicate balanced overall assessments of the effects of organic food systems on society and nature. The framework will be based on extensive analyses of existing methods for multicriteria assessment and communication, and the adaptation and development of selected methods to suit organic food systems and the principles organic agriculture. The validity and utility of the framework is secured through involvement of actors and participatory testing of prototypes in practice. The goal is to help sustain an integrated development of the organic production, contribute to open and...

A polyocular framework for research on multifunctional farming and rural development Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo F.; Langvad, Anne Mette S..
The paradox of multifunctionality is that, on the one hand, the specialized functionalities of agriculture only arise because of the functional differentiation of social systems and scientific disciplines and, on the other hand, multifunctionality can only enter as a way to mediate between conflicts, interests and fragmented knowledge when different functions and observations of functions combine. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a theoretical and methodological platform for multidisciplinary research on multifunctional farming. With the notions of polyocular cognition and polyocular communication we introduce a second order, interdisciplinary communication process that can meet the challenge of creating a shared view on multifunctional farming....

A prototype tool for multicriteria assessments to develop organic food chains Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon.
The problem that we are faced with is that whereas research and experience suggest that stakeholder involvement is crucial to the successful development and implementation of methods of sustainability assessment, it is far from clear how to do this. In this paper we investigate how stakeholders may be involved in making and using overall assessments of organic food systems, and we propose a prototype for how this can be done.

A semiotic polyocular framework for multidisciplinary research in relation to multifunctional farming and rural development Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Langvad, Anne Mette Sørensen.
The concept of multifunctional farming rises out of a problematization of the role of agriculture in society and, in particular, in relation to rural development. Hitherto multifunctional farming has primarily been used as a notion on the relationship between agriculture and society concerning the range of commodity and non-commodity goods that farms provide for society. But the agro-economic achievements together with societal development have led to a point where praxis is questioned and discourse potentially reopened. In an indirect way, the notion of multifunctionality reflects, that aspects not captured by the distinction between commodity and non-commodity need to be reintroduced. This paper offers a new framework (theoretical and methodical)...

Acknowledging the potential role of animal self-medication Organic Eprints
Engel, Cindy Reece.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Much research on animal health and welfare assumes that animals passively endure the pathogens, diet, and environmental conditions that come their way. Natural selection however has honed behavioural strategies for optimising health. Some of these involve the selection of ‘medicines’ to modulate health. Although it is not yet known to what extent domestic species retain the ability to self-medicate, it is vital that researchers acknowledge the potential role such behaviour might play when designing research protocols

Agroecology and Social Sciences. In the perspectives of multidisiplinarity Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
In our presentation we will focus on agroecology and the problems of sustainable agroecosystems regulation, by including a multiperspectival approach (Alrøe and Noe 2011) and a social systems theoretical perspective, based primarily on theories of Niklas Luhmann, Bruno Latour, and Charles Peirce. We will address two main challenges raised by our view on agroecology, the epistemological challenge of how to observe agroecosystems as a whole, and the ontological challenge of how to understand the existence of agroecosystems independently of perspectives.

An approach to include soil carbon changes in life cycle assessments Organic Eprints
Petersen, B.M.; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hermansen, J.E.; Halberg, Niels.
Globally, soil carbon sequestration is expected to hold a major potential to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, the majority of life cycle assessments (LCA) of agricultural products have not included possible changes in soil carbon sequestration. In the present study, a method to estimate carbon sequestration to be included in LCA is suggested and applied to two examples where the inclusion of carbon sequestration is especially relevant: 1) Bioenergy: removal of straw from a Danish soil for energy purposes and 2) Organic versus conventional farming: comparative study of soybean production in China. The suggested approach considers the time of the soil CO2 emissions for the LCA by including the Bern Carbon Cycle Model. Time...

Anvendelse af ufuldstændige blokforsøg Organic Eprints
Kristensen, K.; Willas, J.; Jørgensen, L.N.; Gislum, R..

Assessing the public goods provided by organic agriculture: lessons learned from practice Organic Eprints
Smith, Laurence; Padel, Susanne; Pearce, Bruce; Lampkin, Nic; Gerrard, Catherine L; Woodward, Lawrence; Fowler, Sue; Measures, Mark.
The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process.

Bestehende und mögliche denkbare Ansätze für eine Faire Preisgestaltung im Domestic Fair Trade Organic Eprints
Eichert, M.Sc. Christian; Mayer, M.Sc. Evelyn.
Aspects of fair trade gain a growing relevance in the current debate on the further development and reorientation of the domestic (mid-European) organic sector. Fair trade aspects were part of the implicit self-conception since the organic movement was established. The authors would like to show up ways how these implicit ideals can be carried over into explicit standards comprehensible to the consumer. This request can be reached via liberal, restrictive or transparent fair pricing schemes.
