A Study Evaluation Model and Index System of Industrial Resource and Energy Consumption in Small Towns AgEcon
Tong-sheng, Zhang.
Based on the principles of hierarchy, representativeness, operability and completeness, 10 indices are selected from 3 aspects of resource consumption, energy consumption and environmental emissions during small town development. Comprehensive evaluation index system for industrial source-energy saving and pollution reducing in small towns in constructed. According to the fuzzy mathematical method, qualitative calculation model of two-level hierarchical structure is constructed. Among them, the first-level model focuses on each specific evaluation index. It calculates the membership degree of region to resource-energy and pollution reducing in evaluation index set, and sorts the calculation results. The second-level model focuses on the first-level...

Community Adaptation to the Hebei-Spirit Oil Spill Ecology and Society
Cheong, So-Min; University of Kansas; somin@ku.edu.
The focus of the research is the significance of dependence for communities to survive and adapt in times of environmental disasters. It shifts the emphasis on self-reliant communities for survival and examines the types and effects of dependence and external linkages by analyzing the range of community responses that include initial responses, early social impact, compensation, and conflicts after the Hebei-Spirit oil spill in December 2007 in Korea. The findings reveal that dependence is necessary, and the effects of dependence can be both positive and negative depending on the relations between external entities and affected communities as well as the community capacity to absorb resources and information.

Des modèles et des indicateurs pour évaluer la performance des Aires Marines Protégées pour la gestion des zones côtières. Application à la Réserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio ArchiMer
Rocklin, Delphine.
These last decades have been characterized by a great development of fishing techniques, contributing to the overexploitation of numerous marine fish stocks. In order to limit this collapse and to restore impacted communities, the implementation of management measures was necessary. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), initially developed to protect remarkable habitats and associated biodiversity, are more and more used as a tool for spatial management of fishing activities, by adult export and/or larvae migrations from protected zones to surrounding fisheries. The aim of this PhD was to use indicators and predictive models for evaluating the impact of the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (Corsica) implementation on fish communities and the benefits of such...

Diurnal bird visiting of Caryocar brasiliense Camb. in Central Brazil BJB
MELO,C..
Nectar of nocturnal flowers may be used by diurnal species that occasionally accomplish secondary pollination. Thirteen bird species visited Caryocar brasiliense flowers in central Brazil. There is a temporal separation between nectarivores and non-nectarivores species. Nectarivores birds visited flowers late in the morning, while other species appear earlier. C. brasiliense nectar may be an alternative resource to birds visitors during the dry season.

Diversity and characterization of ramie-degumming strains Scientia Agricola
Duan,Shengwen; Liu,Zhengchu; Feng,Xiangyuan; Zheng,Ke; Cheng,Lifeng; Zheng,Xia.
Ramie (Boehmeria nivea and Boehmeria tenacissima) is a widely used fiber crop. Traditional water retting or chemical boiling method performed in order to extract ramie fiber seriously pollute the environment and severely damage the fiber, so biological method is the general trend of the fiber-extracting industry. Some strains (687), involving 26 genera and 43 species, were collected from the three samples, which produce hydrolyzed circles in the selective culture medium in order to detect the degumming effect and to compare the enzyme activity. Among these strains, 13 of them did not produce cellulase and had a ramie decreasing weight rate above 25 %, which were regarded as efficient ramie-degumming strains named from R1 to R13. R1 to R13 belonged to...

Energy, Environment and the Sustainability of Economic Development in China AgEcon
Fang, Xingming; Hu, Xiaoping; Wang, H. Holly.
Whether the high economic growth of China is sustainable is the matter of interest to the public, government and academic circle of China and meanwhile it catches the attention of the world because the development of China has been exerting increasing impact on the world economy. Since the high economic growth of China has been promoted by heavy and chemical industry (HCI) to a great extent, which resulted in high consumption of energy resource, high consumption of mineral resources and high emission of pollutants (the “triple highness”), the sustainability of high economic growth of China depends on a sustainable growth road for China’s HCI and effective control on the “triple highness”. We find that the contributing factors of the “triple highness” are...

Feeding ecology of stream-dwelling Characidae (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) from the upper Tocantins River, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Moraes,Maíra; Rezende,Carla Ferreira; Mazzoni,Rosana.
In this contribution we studied the trophic ecology of four Characidae species from the Cavalo Stream, upper Tocantins River, considering diet overlap and trophic niche breadth. The diet of the four species was composed of adult and immature insects, both autochthonous and allochthonous in origin. Autochthonous items dominated the diet of Moenkhausia dichroura (Kner, 1858), Bryconamericus sp., and Creagrutus atrisignum Myers, 1917. By contrast, allochthonous items were dominant in the diet of Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758). Trophic niche breadth varied among species, with the highest value recorded for M. dichroura (0.48), followed by Bryconamericus sp. (0.39), A. bimaculatus (0.33) and C. atrisignum (0.29). Similarity analysis revealed two groups...

Offshore wind climatology based on synergetic use of Envisat ASAR, ASCAT and QuikSCAT ArchiMer
Hasager, Charlotte B.; Mouche, Alexis; Badger, Merete; Bingol, Ferhat; Karagali, Ioanna; Driesenaar, Tilly; Stoffelen, Ad; Pena, Alfredo; Longepe, Nicolas.
The offshore wind climatology in the Northern European seas is analysed from ten years of Envisat synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using a total of 9256 scenes, ten years of QuikSCAT and two years of ASCAT gridded ocean surface vector wind products and high-quality wind observations from four meteorological masts in the North Sea. The traditional method for assessment of the wind resource for wind energy application is through analysis of wind speed and wind direction observed during one or more years at a meteorological mast equipped with well-calibrated anemometers at several levels. The cost of such measurements is very high and therefore they are only sparsely available. An alternative method is the application of satellite remote sensing....

Rural Logistics System Based on Rural Informatization AgEcon
Hu, Cui-hong.
Current status of rural informatization construction in China is analyzed, that is the relatively weak rural informatization, asymmetric market information, low level of information sharing, dispersedly allocated resources and no cross point among each other. The importance of information in rural logistic system is introduced: firstly, decision making of logistics system plan is based on information. Secondly, improvement of the overall effectiveness of logistics system is based on information. Thirdly, logistics transmission takes internet as the carrier. Necessity of rural logistics system is discussed from five aspects of increasing the employment of farmers, enhancing the income of farmers, reducing the blindness of agricultural production and...

THE ROLE OF THE TIME FACTOR IN THE MANAGER FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Baba, Eva Bacsne.
The role of the time factor in management is increasing. Change directs attention to the time factor from the point of view of the organisation, and management does the same from that of the person. I examined the time management practice of managers of organisations related to agribusiness, and the reaction time characterising the adaption ability of the organisations through a questionnaire survey. I analysed the collected data with scientifically established statistical methods. During studying resources, managing tasks, change, reaction time and effect I explored the features of time as resource, the significance of the time factor, the improvability of time efficiency in the different managing functions, the factors supporting and hindering the quick...

Variability in nomadism: environmental gradients modulate the movement behaviors of dryland ungulates ArchiMer
Nandintsetseg, Dejid; Bracis, Chloe; Leimgruber, Peter; Kaczensky, Petra; Buuveibaatar, Bayarbaatar; Lkhagvasuren, Badamjav; Chimeddorj, Buyanaa; Enkhtuvshin, Shiilegdamba; Horning, Ned; Ito, Takehiko Y.; Olson, Kirk; Payne, John; Walzer, Chris; Shinoda, Masato; Stabach, Jared; Songer, Melissa; Mueller, Thomas.
Studying nomadic animal movement across species and ecosystems is essential for better understanding variability in nomadism. In arid environments, unpredictable changes in water and forage resources are known drivers of nomadic movements. Water resources vary temporally but are often spatially stationary, whereas foraging resources are often both temporally and spatially variable. These differences may lead to different types of nomadic movements: forage‐ vs. water‐driven nomadism. Our study investigates these two different types of nomadism in relation to resource gradients from mesic steppe to xeric desert environments in Mongolia's Gobi‐Steppe Ecosystem. We hypothesized that in the desert, where water is a key resource, animals are more water‐dependent...
