A model of nematode dynamics in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
We developed a time dynamic model to investigate the temporal dynamics of nematode community in the brackish zone of the Westerschelde Estuary. The biomass of four nematode feeding groups observed from March 1991 to February 1992 is used to calibrate the model. Using environmental data as the input, the model predicts the temporal modification and interrelation of four nematode feeding groups. Nematodes achieve a dominant position in the community because of their lower loss rate (in respiration, excretion and natural death). Predators which are deposit-feeding macrobenthos control the variations of dominant nematodes, such as omnivores and non-selective deposit feeders. Food availability causes modification only for rare nematodes such as epigrowth...

A relationship between deep-sea benthic oxygen demand and oceanic primary productivity ArchiMer
Christensen, Jp.
A diagenetic model of porewater O-2 was used to examine the relationship between organic carbon flux to the sediments and benthic oxygen demand (BOD). The model predicted that the organic carbon influx to sediments balances BOD as long as sediments are oxygenated. The critical rate occurs when O-2 at infinite depth disappears. With influxes exceeding the critical rate, the O-2 flux into the sediments via molecular diffusion can not consume all incoming organic matter, and anaerobic conditions result in BOD underestimating the carbon influx. Given that low rates of deep-sea BOD approximate the carbon influx below 9 g.C.m(-2).y(-1), a significant multilinear regression was found between published BOD, primary productivity (P-p, both in g.C.m(-2).y(-1))(,)...

A state of the art on meiofaunal respiration and production OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
The aerobic respiration of meiofauna in general and of nematodes in particular is studied by means of manometric (Cartesian or related divers) or electrode-based (polarographic electrodes) techniques. The former allow highly accurate measurements on individual or small batches of nematodes, while the latter, less sensitive technique allows rapid and highly reproducible measurements under a variety of abiotic conditions.Nematode respiration is commonly described in a power relation R = aWb, where b averages 0.75 and a represents a measure of metabolic intensity. Published estimates of total nematode community respiration are scant, but seem to agree on an average value of 61...

Activité respiratoire en continu de l'huître Crassostrea gigas : mise au point d'une nouvelle méthodologie ArchiMer
Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe.
A continuous monitoring system to measure the respiration of Crassostrea gigas has been developped. The metabolic function estimated by oxygen consumption has been monitored during periods of 24 h, without food, at a temperature constant of 15°C. Preliminary results showed that the mean percentage of oyster activities was 50 % with a high variability from 0 to 100 %. The number of activity periods per day (24 h) is function of the oysters with variation between 0 and 7.

Benthic metabolism in shallow coastal ecosystems of the Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania ArchiMer
Clavier, Jacques; Chauvaud, Laurent; Amice, Erwan; Lazure, Pascal; Van Der Geest, Matthijs; Labrosse, Pierre; Diagne, Ahmed; Carlier, Antoine; Chauvaud, Sylvain.
Benthic primary production and respiration were investigated at 4 sites representative of the major coastal communities bordering the Sahara Desert in the Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania, Western Africa. These sites correspond to intertidal Zostera noltii beds (270 km(2)), intertidal bare sediments (88 km(2)), subtidal Cymodocea nodosa beds (374 km(2)), and subtidal bare sediments (311 km(2)). At each site, production-irradiance relationships were established in situ in November 2008 and January 2010, and used to calculate daily carbon fluxes for these communities. In intertidal areas, compared to emersion, the gross maximal photosynthetic rates for Z. noltii bed and bare sediment communities were on average 8-and 7-fold higher during immersion, respectively;...

Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer
Pavlova, Z; Morozova, A; Gaudy, R; Shchepkin, V.
One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

Biological Activity in a Degraded Alfisol Amended with Sewage Sludge and Cropped with Yellow Serradela (Ornithopus compressus L.) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Celis H,José; Machuca H,Angela; Sandoval E,Marco; Morales C,Patricia.
There are few studies about the impact of sewage sludge on the biological properties in Alfisols of the Chilean Coastal Range drylands. Hence, the objective of this study was to evaluate its effect on the microbial respiration and enzymatic activities of a degraded Alfisol located in the Bío Bío Region (Chile) that was cropped with yellow serradela (Ornithopus compressus L.). Sludge was added to the soil at rates of 15, 30, and 60 t ha-1; he following treatments were defined: L15-P = 15 t ha-1 sludge + O. compressus; L30-P = 30 t ha-1 sludge + O. compressus; L60-P = 60 t ha-1 sludge + O. compressus; L15 = 15 t ha-1 sludge; L30 = 30 t ha-1 sludge; L60 = 60 t ha-1 sludge; CP = non-amended soil, cropped; and C = non-amended soil, no crop. Carbon flows through meiobenthic nematodes in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
A time dynamic model was used to estimate carbon flows through nematodes in an intertidal benthic ecosystem in the Westerschelde Estuary, The Netherlands. The model calibrated the nematode biomass observed from March 1991 to February 1992. The forcing functions of the model included meiobenthos biomass, macrobenthos biomass, bacterial density, chlorophyll-a concentration, and other abiotic data such as temperature and day length. We estimate that the nematode population had a low level of standing stock 249 mg C m(-2), but a high level of carbon flow. It consumed 98 mg C m(-2) d(-1) and produced 22 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Defecation was 73 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Losses in respiration, excretion and natural death were only 3 mg C m(-2) d(-1). The annual P/B was 32 for...

Cold-water coral reefs and adjacent sponge grounds: hotspots of benthic respiration and organic carbon cycling in the deep sea ArchiMer
Cathalot, Cecile; Van Oevelen, Dick; Cox, Tom J.s.; Kutti, Tina; Lavaleye, Marc S. S.; Duineveld, Gca; Meysman, Filip J. R..
Cold-water coral reefs and adjacent sponge grounds are distributed widely in the deep ocean, where only a small fraction of the surface productivity reaches the seafloor as detritus. It remains elusive how these hotspots of biodiversity can thrive in such a food-limited environment, as data on energy flow and organic carbon utilization are critically lacking. Here we report in situ community respiration rates for cold-water coral and sponge ecosystems obtained by the non-invasive aquatic Eddy Correlation technique. Oxygen uptake rates over coral reefs and adjacent sponge grounds in the Træna Coral Field (Norway) were 9–20 times higher than those of the surrounding soft sediments. These high respiration rates indicate strong organic matter consumption, and...

Consommation d'oxygene de la crevette japonaise, Penaeus japonicus , en fonction de l'oxygenation du milieu: Effects de la temperature et de l'acclimatation a des conditions ambiantes hypoxiques ArchiMer
Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Ecophysiologie de la maturation sexuelle et de la ponte de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas : réponses métaboliques (respiration) et alimentaires (filtration, absorption) en fonction des différents stades de maturation ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. Male and female oysters had similar physiological responses. The filtration rate ranged from 2.4 to 2.6 1.h(-1) at the early stages of maturation and decreased to 1.8 1.h.' during the maturity stage. Growth rate resulting from gonad...

Effects of contrasting irradiances on carbon balance, biomass partition, and leaf nutrient contents in brazilian cerrado woody species. Repositório Alice
RONQUIM, C. C.; PRADO, C. H. B. de A.; AVELLAR, L. M. de..
It was evaluated growth and photosynthetic peformance of two leguminosae woody species under contrasting irradiances environments, Anadenanthera falcata (Benth.) Speg. and Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville. Under total irradiance in open area both species presented greater biomass accumulation, height, stem diameter, total leaf area and higher photosynthetic capacity on area bases (Amaxa). Shaded individuals under canopy modified the biomass partition, presenting greater mean values of leaf area rate (LAR), and smaller values of the specific leaf mass (SLM), repiration in dark (Rd), and apparent photorespiration (Pr) , apparent carboxylation efficiency (eletron transport rate (J). High transitory concentrations of CO2 increased the photosynthetic...

EFFECTS OF IMMOBILIZATION IN Ba-ALGINATE ON NITRILE-DEPENDENT OXYGEN UPTAKE RATES OF CANDIDA GUILLIERMONDII BJM
Dias,João Carlos Teixeira; Rezende,Rachel Passos; Linardi,Valter Roberto.
Yeast cells immobilized by entrapment in Ba-alginate gel were investigated for growth pattern and respiratory activity. The oxygen uptake rates (OUR) of cells entrapped in gels with 4% alginate were 5.2 and 23% lower than the OUR of 2% alginate and free cells, respectively. The mass-transfer resistance offered by the matrix and growth of the entrapped cells determine a gradient of nutrients throughout the gel which is responsible for both a lower specific growth rate of immobilized cells with respect to that of free ones, and a heterogeneous biomass distribution, with progressively increasing cellular density from the inside to the outside of the matrix. Gel-matrix polymer concentration affected the maximum oxygen uptake of immobilized growing yeast cells.
