A new analytical formulation of retention effects on particle diffusion processes Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bevilacqua,Luiz; Galeão,Augusto C.N.R.; Costa,Flavio P..
The ultimate purpose of this paper is to present a new analytical formulation to simulate diffusion with retention in a reactive medium under stable thermodynamic conditions. The analysis of diffusion with retention in a continuum medium is developed after the solution of an equivalent problem using a discrete approach. The new law may be interpreted as the reduction of all diffusion processes with retention to a unifying phenomenon that can adequately simulate the retention effect namely a circulatory motion. It is remarkable that the governing equation requires a fourth order differential term as suggested by the discrete approach. The relative fraction of diffusion particles β is introduced as a control parameter in the diffusion-retention law as...

Boaventura,Túlio P.; Gil,Viviane S. B.; Gil,Camila S. B.; Peres,Anderson M.; Luz,Ronald K..
ABSTRACT This study tested an external tag for juveniles of Lophiosilurus alexandri and measured the effects of tagging in different size classes of fishes. Experiment 1 evaluated the retention rate and influence of the tag on survival and growth of three hundred fishes divided Small, Medium and Large size classes. After 90 days of experiment the fishes had 100% survival and the tag had a higher retention rate for animals of the Large size class. Experiment 2 evaluated the tag’s influence on hematology parameters of forty-two fishes at 5, 10 and 30 days post-tagging. In this experiment both tagged and untagged animals experienced 9.4% mortality. The hematocrit was higher on the 30th day for tagged animals than for untagged animals. No difference was...

Assessment of the exposure pathway in the uptake and distribution of americium and cesium in cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) at different stages of its life cycle ArchiMer
Bustamante, Paco; Teissier, J.l; Warnau, M.
Laboratory radiotracer experiments were performed to study the uptake, assimilation and retention of americium (241Am) and cesium (134Cs) by the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. Uptake and loss kinetics of the radionuclides were measured following exposure through sediments, seawater and food at different stages of the animal's life cycle. Sediment was found to be a minor uptake pathway for both radionuclides in juveniles. Following a short seawater exposure, cuttlefish accumulated 241Am and 134Cs, but only to a limited extent (whole-body CF < 2). Among the cuttlefish organs, branchial hearts and their appendages displayed the highest degree of uptake for 241Am (CF = 42 and 16, respectively), but these tissues contained low percentage of total 241Am...

Zhang,TY; Liu,JL; Zhang,JL; Zhang,N; Yang,X; Qu,HX; Xi,L; Han,JC.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal zinc (Zn) requirement of broiler chickens based on Zn retention. On the day of hatch, 350 male Ross 308 broilers were randomly assigned to seven treatments with five replicates of ten birds each. Zinc was supplemented as ZnSO4·7H2O at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 mg/kg in the starter diet (fed from 1 to 21 d of age) and at 0, 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, or 96 mg/kg in the grower diet (fed from 22 to 42 d of age). The analyzed Zn levels were 34.98 and 27.57 mg/kg in the basal starter and grower diets, respectively. Supplemental Zn levels did not influence body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or liver Zn content of broilers at 21 and 42 d of age (p>0.05). Tibia ash Zn content...

Efficient Conservation in a Utility-Maximization Framework Ecology and Society
Davis, Frank W; University of California; fd@bren.ucsb.edu; Costello, Christopher; University of California; costello@bren.ucsb.edu; Stoms, David; University of California; stoms@bren.ucsb.edu.
Systematic planning for biodiversity conservation is being conducted at scales ranging from global to national to regional. The prevailing planning paradigm is to identify the minimum land allocations needed to reach specified conservation targets or maximize the amount of conservation accomplished under an area or budget constraint. We propose a more general formulation for setting conservation priorities that involves goal setting, assessing the current conservation system, developing a scenario of future biodiversity given the current conservation system, and allocating available conservation funds to alter that scenario so as to maximize future biodiversity. Under this new formulation for setting conservation priorities, the value of a site depends on...

Environmental fate of S-Metolachlor: a review Planta Daninha
Zemolin,C.R.; Avila,L.A.; Cassol,G.V.; Massey,J.H.; Camargo,E.R..
S-metolachlor is a preemergent herbicide used for the control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaf weeds in more than 70 agricultural crops worldwide. Recently, Smetolachlor has been used to control imidazolinone-resistant red rice in rice-soybean rotation in lowland environments of the Southern Brazil. However, limited information concerning the environmental fate of S-metolachlor in lowland soil is available in the literature. Thus, this review was designed to describe the major transport and dissipation processes of Smetolachlor in attempting to improve weed management programs used in rice-soybean rotation and mitigate environmental contamination of lowland areas.

Glyphosate sorption and desorption in soils with distinct phosphorus levels Scientia Agricola
Prata,Fábio; Cardinali,Vanessa Camponez do Brasil; Lavorenti,Arquimedes; Tornisielo,Valdemar Luiz; Regitano,Jussara Borges.
The sorption of glyphosate by soils occurs due to the inner sphere complex formation with metals of soil oxides, which are related to the soil phosphate adsorption capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing rates of phosphorus on sorption and desorption of glyphosate in three soils with different mineralogical attributes. Soils were a Rhodic Kandiudalf, an Anionic Acrudox and a Typic Humaquept. Soil samples were amended with KH2PO4 at equivalent rates of 0; 1,000; 5,000; 20,000 and 50,000 kg ha-1 of P2O5, which are high from the agricultural point of view, but necessary in order to perform sorption and desorption studies. The experimental design consisted of a completely randomized factorial: 2 soils x 5 phosphorus rates and...

Microencapsulation of pequi pulp oil by complex coacervation Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Justi,Priscilla Narciso; Sanjinez-Argandoña,Eliana Janet; Macedo,Maria Lígia Rodrigues.
Abstract Pequi pulp oil, Caryocar brasiliense, is rich in carotenoids, antioxidant compound easily oxidized by the presence of heat, light and oxygen. In order to improve its stability, pequi oil was microencapsulated by complex coacervation using gelatin and Arabic gum as encapsulating agents. Twenty formulations were prepared using a 23 central composite rotational design. The influence of temperature, stirring velocity and core material in the oil coacervation were evaluated, aiming to preserve carotenoids present in the oil. The best yield values and carotenoids content were obtained at the midpoint of the design (7.5g core, 15.000rpm and 50°C). Particles showed asymmetric distribution, with diameter ranging from 15 to 145 µm and the efficiency of the...

Modélisation biophysique pour la prévision du recrutement ArchiMer
Allain, Gwenhael.
Exploited fish populations are dependent on recruitment (i.e. size of the new year class) to sustain their abundance. Recruitment variations are related to hydroclimatic variations and may accentuate the detrimental effects of fishing. Recruitment prediction requires accurate fisheries oceanographic tools, which are expected to be more reliable than large-scale correlation analyses between fish abundance and climate variables. Recruitment is the result of the integration over a season and large oceanic areas of processes affecting larval survival, which are dependent on small-scale mechanisms. Hydrodynamic models are a tool to perform this integration. This thesis aims at exploring and modelling physical-biological interaction mechanisms in order to...

Retention and Solute Transport Properties in Disturbed and Undisturbed Soil Samples Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Lívia Previatello da; van Lier,Quirijn de Jong; Correa,Marcus Metri; Miranda,Jarbas Honorio de; Oliveira,Luciano Alves de.
ABSTRACT Solute transport parameters can be determined in miscible displacement experiments, usually performed in columns with disturbed (sieved) soil samples. Experiments with undisturbed samples are uncommon, due to the difficulty of taking undisturbed samples at the size required for these experiments. Structural alteration of the disturbed material implies modifications in the pore geometry that determines hydraulic properties, including hydraulic conductivity and retention and properties related to miscible displacement. An existing model for prediction of breakthrough curves based on retention properties was tested using material from a medium-textured Ferralsol, and alterations caused by sample disturbance were investigated. Soil water retention...

In the southern Benguela, sardine and anchovy spawn on the Western Agulhas Bank. Eggs and larvae are transported to the West coast nursery ground by a! coastal current. Once the larvae reach the West coast, retention within the favorable coastal domain is key to larvae survival and recruitment. The Cape Columbine-St Helena Bay area is the main nursery ground along the West Coast. In this area, the interaction between upwelling and topography results in the formation of an upwelling plume. The plume, and the associated circulation patterns, is thought to be the mechanism providing retention within the coastal domain. The dynamics of the plume are studied using a set of:numerical experiments. It is shown that an equatorward wind forcing produces a cyclonic...
