Changes in plasma membrane lipids, aquaporins and proton pump of broccoli roots, as an adaptation mechanism to salinity Inra

Salinity stress is known to modify the plasma membrane lipid and protein composition of plant cells. In this work, we determined the effects of salt stress on the lipid composition of broccoli root plasma membrane vesicles and investigated how these changes could affect water transport via aquaporins. Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica plants treated with different levels of NaCl (0, 40 or 80 mM) showed significant differences in sterol and fatty acid levels. Salinity increased linoleic (18:2) and linolenic (18:3) acids and stigmasterol, but decreased palmitoleic (16:1) and oleic (18:1) acids and sitosterol. The focus of this thesis is on the design of policy instruments to manage environmental issues, with a particular interest in dynamic taxation schemes and cap and trade systems in the context of irrigation-induced salinity. This issue is of crucial importance in most irrigated areas throughout the world. A first goal of the thesis is to investigate the use of dynamic taxation schemes based on a measure of group performance, as a way of implementing the notion of collective responsibility. Surface salinity reconstruction of the north-atlantic ocean during the last glacial maximum ArchiMer

We have developed a new method to reconstruct surface water salinity of the North Atlantic Ocean, based on a comparison between transfer function estimates of sea surface temperature and the oxygen isotope ratio of two common planktonic foraminiferal species, N. pachyderma (left coiling) and G. bulloides. We first used core-top analyses to demonstrate that, under modern conditions, the paleotemperatures determined from the isotopic composition of foraminiferal shells are linearly linked to the summer sea surface temperature only within a certain temperature range, characteristic of each species, which is termed the "optimum temperature range". The effect of environmental salinity on the proteome of the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) Inra

The European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., tolerates a range of salinities from freshwater to hyper-saline. To study differences in protein expression, fish were reared in both freshwater and seawater. After 3-month acclimation, gill and intestine epithelia were collected and the soluble protein extracted. In all, 362 spots were differentially expressed in the gills and intestines of fishes reared in seawater compared to those from freshwater. Fifty differential protein spots were excised from a colloidal Coomassie-stained gel. Nine separate protein spots were identified unambiguously by mass spectrometry and database searching. Two different effects of calcium on aquaporins in salinity-stressed pepper plants Inra

Two different effects of calcium were studied, respectively, in plasma membrane vesicles and in protoplasts isolated from roots of control pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L cv. California) or of plants treated with 50 mM NaCl, 10 mM CaCl(2) or 10 mM CaCl(2) + 50 mM NaCl. Under saline conditions, osmotic water permeability (P ( f )) values decreased in protoplasts and plasma membrane vesicles, and the same reduction wasobserved in the PIP1 aquaporin abundance, indicating inhibitory effects of NaCl on aquaporin functionality and protein abundance. Western boundary currents and transports off french-guiana as inferred from pegasus observations ArchiMer

Pegasus current measurements carried out along a section located off French Guiana are presented; the section was repeated five times from September 1989 to June 1991 during the NOE (region Nord-Ouest equatoriale)/STACS (Sub Tropical Atlantic Climate Studies) cruises on board the NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) research vessels. The data (vertical and horizontal distributions) show, as suggested by earliest observations, the presence of different currents.
