Complementation of the Lactococcus lactis secretion machinery with Bacillus subtilis SecDF improves secretion of staphylococcal nuclease Inra

Unlike Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli, the gram-positive lactic acid bacterium Lactococcus lactis does notpossess the SecDF protein, a component of the secretion (Sec) machinery involved in late secretion stages andrequired for the high-capacity protein secretion in B. subtilis. In this study, we complemented the L. lactis Secmachinery with SecDF from B. subtilis and evaluated the effect on the secretion of two forms of staphylococcalnuclease, NucB and NucT, which are efficiently and poorly secreted, respectively. Control of Listeria superoxide dismutase by phosphorylation Inra

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are enzymes that protect organisms against superoxides and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during their active metabolism. ROS are major mediators of phagocytes microbicidal activity. Here we show that the cytoplasmic Listeria monocytogenes MnSOD is phosphorylated on serine and threonine residues and less active when bacteria reach the stationary phase. We also provide evidence that the most active nonphosphorylated form of MnSOD can be secreted via the SecA2 pathway in culture supernatants and in infected cells, where it becomes phosphorylated. Liming (Ca–Mg soil amendment) is a forestry practice used to correct soil acidification and restore health and productivity in declining stands. Liming is known to modify tree mineral nutrition beyond the sole Ca and Mg. We hypothesized that liming also modifies the very functioning of the tree absorbing system (that is the ectomycorrhizal fine roots) in a way that facilitates the mobilization of mineral nutrients, particularly those entrapped in soil organic matter. Effects of thinning an established stand, of nitrogen supply, and of temperature on nectar secretion in alfalfa National Institute of Agronomic Research

1. Nectar secretion per flower in alfalfa in 1956 was stimulated by earlier thinning (in 1953, 1954, and 1955) of established stands. Stimulation was greatest for the first crop after thinning and then diminished. 2. Opening up the stand to permit more sunlight to enter per unit of vegetation is believed to account for part of the stimulation, but other nutritional factors are considered to be involved, and these are discussed. 3. A general reduction in nectar secretion during the sampling period was associated with a drop in temperature.

The complex-type N-linked glycans of plants differ markedly in structure from those of animals. Like those of insects and mollusks they lack terminal sialic acid(s) and may contain an ?-(1,3)-fucose (Fuc) linked to the proximal GlcNAc residue and/or a ?-(1,2)-xylose (Xyl) residue attached to the proximal mannose (Man) of the glycan core. N-glycosylated GFPs were used in previous studies showing their effective use to report on membrane traffic between the ER and the Golgi apparatus in plant cells. Les nématodes à kyste du genre Globodera sont des vers microscopiques, hétérotrophes qui parasitent les racines des plantes essentiellement de la famille des Solanacées. Nectar secretion in excised flowers. III. The dual effect of indolyl-3-acetic acid National Institute of Agronomic Research

The quantity of nectar sugar secreted by excised Antirrhinum flowers was reduced when indolyl-3-acetic acid (IAA) was added to the culture solution at 5 X 104M concentration. The volume of fluid was reduced by IAA in culture solutions containing 5-20% sucrose, but increased by IAA in pure water or dilute sucrose solutions. Pre-treatment with IAA produced the same effects as constant exposure. Calcium and potassium ions modified the action of IAA on water excretion. Nectaries of IAA-treated flowers differed in microscopic appearance from those of controls, and resembled the nectaries of flowers cultured in pure water. Secretion of Streptomyces tendae antifungal protein 1 by Lactococcus lactis Inra

Lactococcus lactis, the model lactic acid bacterium, is a good candidate for heterologous protein production in both foodstuffs and the digestive tract. We attempted to produce Streptomyces tendae antifungal protein 1 (Afp1) in L. lactis with the objective of constructing a strain able to limit fungal growth. Since Afp1 activity requires disulfide bond (DSB) formation and since intracellular redox conditions are reportedly unfavorable for DSB formation in prokaryotes, Afp1 was produced as a secreted form. An inducible expression-secretion system was used to drive Afp1 secretion by L. lactis; Afp1 was fused or not with LEISSTCDA, a synthetic propeptide (LEISS) that has been described to be a secretion enhancer.
