Abiotic alterations caused by forest fragmentation affect tree regeneration: a shade and drought tolerance gradient in the remnants of Coastal Maulino Forest 97
GUERRERO,PABLO C; BUSTAMANTE,RAMIRO O.
Plant regeneration is strongly determined by light and soil moisture differences between habitáis; both variables are modified by large-scale forest fragmentation. Several studies have indicated this alteration as the mechanism involved in tropical forest community change. The effects of fragmentation may be much more severe in Mediterranean and deciduous forests, because plant species in these forests show a stress tolerance tradeoff between shade and drought. Our study was performed in the deciduous fragmented Coastal Maulino Forest: Reserva Nacional Los Queules (RNLQ) and surrounding small fragments. We hypothesised that Aristotelia chilensis (shade intolerant but drought tolerant) should increase its regeneration in small patches as a consequence of...

An ecophysiographic approach for Araucaria araucana regeneration management 118
Drake,Fernando; Molina,Juan Ramón; Herrera,Miguel Ángel.
Chilean temperate forests are dominated by Nothofagus and Araucaria araucana species. Despite A. araucana not being at imminent risk of extinction, its cultural value and the associated environmental services and landscape goods have an important role for the conservation of this native forest. In some areas, the future conservation of A. araucana is a cause of great concern given its management prohibition and regeneration limitation due to slow growth, canopy tree competition and dense understory. The above characteristics make this species most susceptible to some disturbances, such as livestock, wildlife and human pressures. Therefore, sustainable management of A. araucana forests requires the assessment of its regeneration condition. The objective of...

Design and performance evaluation of PHilMech multi-row onion seeder: Ten-row model 111
Dela Cruz, Renita Sta. Maria; Idago, Rodelio G.
There are several inefficiencies in the present direct seeding method of onion that are being practiced in the Philippines.  This study aimed to address these inefficiencies by developing and evaluating a tractor-hitched mechanical seeder that could efficiently distribute and plant onion seeds and reduce production cost.           Machine development was done from 2013-2016 and laboratory and extensive field evaluations in farmers’ farms were carried out in 2016-2017.  A 10-row, tractor-hitched and drill type onion seeder was developed which is capable of opening furrows, metering and delivering the seeds to the furrows, covering the seeds and firming the seedbed.  The machine was evaluated in terms of its technical performance following the...

Growth and early seedling survival of four Atacama Desert shrub species under experimental light and water availability regimes 97
Carvajal,Danny E; Loayza,Andrea P; López,Ramiro P; Toro,Pablo J; Squeo,Francisco A.
BACKGROUND: In arid environments, where light and water supply are patchy in space and time, differences in how seedlings tolerate drought and shade conditions will determine the ability of a species to establish. Understanding seedling responses to the interactive effects of water and shade is critical to predict the future impact of increasing drought frequencies on plant communities across many arid ecosystems of the world. In this study, we used an experimental field approach to assess how different light (15%, 75%, and 95%) and water (natural rainfall (NR), NR +50 mm, NR +100 mm) levels affect seedling survival and growth of four Atacama Desert shrub species (Calliandra chilensis, Encella canescens, Proustia cuneifolia, and Senna cumingii). We...

Non-overlap of hosts used by three congeneric and sympatric loranthaceous mistletoe species in an Amazonian savanna: host generalization to extreme specialization 39
Fadini,Rodrigo Ferreira.
Two main hypotheses predominate in the literature on mistletoe-host specificity: (1) mistletoes are only likely to specialize on plant species on which they are frequently deposited; and (2) compatibility between mistletoes and plant species is a prerequisite for mistletoe-host parasitism. I explored these hypotheses by studying the seed deposition patterns and mistletoe-host compatibility in populations of three congeneric and sympatric mistletoe species of the genus Psittacanthus (P. biternatus, P. eucalyptifolius and P. plagiophyllus - Loranthaceae). I recorded the presence or absence of these mistletoe species in 15 tree species in a savanna patch in Amazonia. Among the five tree species that I found to be potential hosts (at least one tree individual...

Seed size-number trade-off in Euterpe edulis in plant communities of the Atlantic Forest 63
Brancalion,Pedro Henrique Santin; Rodrigues,Ricardo Ribeiro.
Investigations of seed size and number differences among plant populations growing in contrasting habitats can provide relevant information about ecological strategies that optimize reproductive effort. This may imply important consequences for biodiversity conservation and restoration. Therefore, we sought to investigate seed size-number trade-off in Euterpe edulis populations growing in plant communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Seed dry mass and seed number per bunch were evaluated in 2008 and 2009 in large remnants of the Seasonally Dry Forest, Restinga Forest and Atlantic Rainforest in southeastern Brazil, in 20 individuals per site and year. Seed size and seed number varied among forest types, but a seed size-number trade-off was neither...
