An appropriate data set size for digital soil mapping in Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Caten,Alexandre ten; Dalmolin,Ricardo Simão Diniz; Pedron,Fabrício de Araújo; Ruiz,Luis Fernando Chimelo; Silva,Carlos Antônio da.
Digital information generates the possibility of a high degree of redundancy in the data available for fitting predictive models used for Digital Soil Mapping (DSM). Among these models, the Decision Tree (DT) technique has been increasingly applied due to its capacity of dealing with large datasets. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the data volume used to generate the DT models on the quality of soil maps. An area of 889.33 km² was chosen in the Northern region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The soil-landscape relationship was obtained from reambulation of the studied area and the alignment of the units in the 1:50,000 scale topographic mapping. Six predictive covariates linked to the factors soil formation, relief and organisms,...

Aspectos metodológicos do trabalho de campo para caracterização de solos a partir do saber local: estudo de caso no norte de Minas Gerais. Infoteca-e
CORREIA, J. R.; ANJOS, L. H. C. dos; NEVES, D. P.; LIMA, A. C. S.; TOLEDO, L. de O.; CALDERANO FILHO, B..
ABSTRACT: Despite of all modem communications tools, difficulties of dialogue still exist between technicians and local community members when dealing with natural resources. This is related to many factors, from the predominantly technical formation of the teachers and researches to the difficult of local population members to be understood about their relationship with the surrounding environment. In the case of Soil Science, this problem also occurs. Proposals for planning soil sustainable usage, usually, are compromised because the do not consider the local knowledge, especially in rural communities, where there is no basic material compatible to the work scale needed. The approach of observing the environment and how humans interact with it, from the...

Bibliometric Analysis for Pattern Exploration in Worldwide Digital Soil Mapping Publications Anais da ABC (AABC)
CANCIAN,LUCIANO C.; DALMOLIN,RICARDO S.D.; CATEN,ALEXANDRE T..
Abstract Bibliometric analyses provide a clear understanding of the scientific performance and relate them with standards of the global scientific production. Soil science is an outstanding and developing field among environmental sciences. Knowledge about soil characteristics and their distribution in the environment has been enriched by the use of new geotechnologies, resulting in what is known as digital soil mapping. Thus, the objective of this work was to characterize the scientific production in digital soil mapping in Brazil and in the world, in the period from 1996 to 2017, in databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. In the general context of increasing numbers of papers, the journal Geoderma published the highest number of related papers....

Decision trees for digital soil mapping on subtropical basaltic steeplands Scientia Agricola
Giasson,Elvio; Sarmento,Eliana Casco; Weber,Eliseu; Flores,Carlos Alberto; Hasenack,Heinrich.
When soil surveys are not available for land use planning activities, digital soil mapping techniques can be of assistance. Soil surveyors can process spatial information faster, to assist in the execution of traditional soil survey or predict the occurrence of soil classes across landscapes. Decision tree techniques were evaluated as tools for predicting the ocurrence of soil classes in basaltic steeplands in South Brazil. Several combinations of types of decicion tree algorithms and number of elements on terminal nodes of trees were compared using soil maps with both original and simplified legends. In general, decision tree analysis was useful for predicting occurrence of soil mapping units. Decision trees with fewer elements on terminal nodes yield...

Digital soil mapping: strategy for data pre-processing Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Caten,Alexandre ten; Dalmolin,Ricardo Simão Diniz; Ruiz,Luis Fernando Chimelo.
The region of greatest variability on soil maps is along the edge of their polygons, causing disagreement among pedologists about the appropriate description of soil classes at these locations. The objective of this work was to propose a strategy for data pre-processing applied to digital soil mapping (DSM). Soil polygons on a training map were shrunk by 100 and 160 m. This strategy prevented the use of covariates located near the edge of the soil classes for the Decision Tree (DT) models. Three DT models derived from eight predictive covariates, related to relief and organism factors sampled on the original polygons of a soil map and on polygons shrunk by 100 and 160 m were used to predict soil classes. The DT model derived from observations 160 m away...

Digital soil mapping using multiple logistic regression on terrain parameters in southern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Giasson,Elvio; Clarke,Robin Thomas; Inda Junior,Alberto Vasconcellos; Merten,Gustavo Henrique; Tornquist,Carlos Gustavo.
Soil surveys are necessary sources of information for land use planning, but they are not always available. This study proposes the use of multiple logistic regressions on the prediction of occurrence of soil types based on reference areas. From a digitalized soil map and terrain parameters derived from the digital elevation model in ArcView environment, several sets of multiple logistic regressions were defined using statistical software Minitab, establishing relationship between explanatory terrain variables and soil types, using either the original legend or a simplified legend, and using or not stratification of the study area by drainage classes. Terrain parameters, such as elevation, distance to stream, flow accumulation, and topographic wetness...

How is the learning process of digital soil mapping in a diverse group of land use planners? Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Dalmolin,Ricardo Simão Diniz; Moura-Bueno,Jean Michel; Samuel-Rosa,Alessandro; Flores,Carlos Alberto.
ABSTRACT The use of new technologies, the development of new software, and the advances in the machines ability to process data have brought a new perspective to soil science and especially to pedology, with the advent of digital soil mapping (DSM). To meet the demand for soil surveys in Brazil, it will be necessary to popularize the techniques used in DSM. To identify and map the soil to generate maps of land use capability, we proposed a theoretical and practical course focused on the training in DSM for professionals involved in the management of land resources. The methodology was divided into five modules: I. Introduction to pedology, soil-landscape relationship, soil survey and soil classification (theory); II. Identification of soils in the field...

HOW SOIL FORMING PROCESSES DETERMINE SOIL-BASED VITICULTURAL ZONING J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Ubalde,J.M; Sort,X; Poch,R.M.
The aim of this study was to elucidate the soil forming processes of representative vineyard soils, and to discuss the implications on a soil-based viticultural zoning at very detailed scale. The study area is located in Priorat, Penedes and Conca de Barbera viticultural areas (Catalonia, North-eastern Spain). The studied soils belong to representative soil map units determined at 1:5,000 scale, according to Soil Taxonomy classification. The soil forming processes, identified through morphological and micromorphological analyses, have significant effects on some soil properties. For example, the different processes of clay accumulation in soils developed from granodiorites in Priorat or gravel deposits in Conca de Barbera, are primarily responsible for...

In situ separation of soil types along transects employing Vis-NIR sensors: a new view of soil evaluation Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Fiorio,Peterson Ricardo; Demattê,José Alexandre Melo; Nanni,Marcos Rafael; Genú,Aline Marques; Martins,Juliano Araujo.
Soil components, such as organic matter, the levels and form of iron oxides, moisture and texture, influence the interaction of the soil with electromagnetic energy, so that knowledge of the energy reflected by different classes of soil is therefore of help in their discrimination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of differentiating classes of soils along two transects, by means of the field spectral behaviour of different classes, using both visual and multivariate statistical analysis. Equidistant points were marked along the transects, 100 m apart, where geo-referenced soil samples were collected from the surface layer at a depth of 0 to 0.20 m. In the area under study, ten classes of soil were described by means of laboratory...

Instance selection in digital soil mapping: a study case in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Giasson,Elvio; ten Caten,Alexandre; Bagatini,Tatiane; Bonfatti,Benito.
A critical issue in digital soil mapping (DSM) is the selection of data sampling method for model training. One emerging approach applies instance selection to reduce the size of the dataset by drawing only relevant samples in order to obtain a representative subset that is still large enough to preserve relevant information, but small enough to be easily handled by learning algorithms. Although there are suggestions to distribute data sampling as a function of the soil map unit (MU) boundaries location, there are still contradictions among research recommendations for locating samples either closer or more distant from soil MU boundaries. A study was conducted to evaluate instance selection methods based on spatially-explicit data collection using...

Mapping Soil Cation Exchange Capacity in a Semiarid Region through Predictive Models and Covariates from Remote Sensing Data Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Chagas,César da Silva; Carvalho Júnior,Waldir de; Pinheiro,Helena Saraiva Koenow; Xavier,Pedro Armentano Mudado; Bhering,Silvio Barge; Pereira,Nilson Rendeiro; Calderano Filho,Braz.
ABSTRACT: Planning sustainable use of land resources requires reliable information about spatial distribution of soil physical and chemical properties related to environmental processes and ecosystemic functions. In this context, cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a fundamental soil quality indicator; however, it takes money and time to obtain this data. Although many studies have been conducted to spatially quantify soil properties on various scales and in different environments, not much is known about interactions between soil properties and environmental covariates in the Brazilian semiarid region. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of random forest and cokriging models applied to predict CEC in the Brazilian semiarid region. The...

Multinomial Logistic Regression and Random Forest Classifiers in Digital Mapping of Soil Classes in Western Haiti Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Jeune,Wesly; Francelino,Márcio Rocha; Souza,Eliana de; Fernandes Filho,Elpídio Inácio; Rocha,Genelício Crusoé.
ABSTRACT Digital soil mapping (DSM) has been increasingly used to provide quick and accurate spatial information to support decision-makers in agricultural and environmental planning programs. In this study, we used a DSM approach to map soils in western Haiti and compare the performance of the Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) with Random Forest (RF) to classify the soils. The study area of 4,300 km2 is mostly composed of diverse limestone rocks, alluvial deposits, and, to a lesser extent, basalt. A soil survey was conducted whereby soils were described and classified at 258 sites. Soil samples were collected and subjected to physical and chemical analyses. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) was used to select the most important covariates from...

Soil type spatial prediction from Random Forest: different training datasets, transferability, accuracy and uncertainty assessment Scientia Agricola
Machado,Diego Fernandes Terra; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Curi,Nilton; Menezes,Michele Duarte de.
ABSTRACT: Different uses of soil legacy data such as training dataset as well as the selection of soil environmental covariables could drive the accuracy of machine learning techniques. Thus, this study evaluated the ability of the Random Forest algorithm to predict soil classes from different training datasets and extrapolate such information to a similar area. The following training datasets were extracted from legacy data: a) point data composed of 53 soil samples; b) 30 m buffer around the soil samples, and soil map polygons excluding: c) 20 m; and d) 30 m from the boundaries of polygons. These four datasets were submitted to principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce multidimensionality. Each dataset derived a new one. Different combinations of...

Solum depth spatial prediction comparing conventional with knowledge-based digital soil mapping approaches Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
Solum depth and its spatial distribution play an important role in different types of environmental studies. Several approaches have been used for fitting quantitative relationships between soil properties and their environment in order to predict them spatially. This work aimed to present the steps required for solum depth spatial prediction from knowledge-based digital soil mapping, comparing the prediction to the conventional soil mapping approach through field validation, in a watershed located at Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Conventional soil mapping had aerial photo-interpretation as a basis. The knowledge-based digital soil mapping applied fuzzy logic and similarity vectors in an expert system. The knowledge-based...
