Ould Yarba, L.; Ghorbel, M.; Bouain, A..
The red Pandora Pagellus bellottii is one of the most important demersal species in the fisheries of Mauritanian coasts. Several gears and fleet traditionally exploit it. The studies concerning this fish and particularly those of its age and growth are rare and haven't used the adequate method, which uses hard pieces like scale and vertebra. The objective of the present work is to contribute to the knowledge of the growth parameters of the red Pandora using the scales method not yet used in the studied area. To determine the age and to study the growth of Pagellus bellottii in Mauritanian coasts, we have used the scales of 544 individuals. We have taken, 8 scales under the fin pectoral and we have read the age using a binocular magnifying glass provided...

Combined replacement of fish meal and oil in practical diets for fast growing juveniles of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.): Networking of systemic and local components of GH/IGF axis ArchiMer
Benedito Palos, L; Saera Vila, A; Calduch Giner, J; Kaushik, Sadasivam; Perez Sanchez, J.
Growth performance and growth regulatory pathways were examined in juvenile gilthead sea bream fed diets containing largely plant-based ingredients. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic extruded diets with a low level (20%) of fish meal inclusion were formulated with graded levels of a vegetable oil mixture (17:58:25 of rapeseed: linseed: palm oils) replacing fish oil at 33, 66 and 100% (33VO, 66VO and VO diets). All diets were supplemented with lysine (0.55%) and contained soy lecithin (1%). Daily growth coefficients and feed efficiency over the course of an 11-week trial were almost identical in fish fed the FO, 33VO and 66VO diets. The VO diet reduced feed intake and growth without significant effects in proximate whole body composition, nitrogen or...

Comparison of two tagging techniques for Sarpa salpa: external attachment and intraperitoneal. implantation ArchiMer
Jadot, C.
For a given species in a particular environment, the success and the harmlessness of transmitter attachment appear to be highly specific. As no information was available for the tagging of the strepie, Sarpa salpa, a suitability study of attachment techniques was needed. Two types of transmitter attachments were investigated: (1) externally, placed on the back of the fish below the dorsal fin by means of two threads sutured through the dorsal musculature, and (2) internally, in the peritoneal cavity. Twenty-five fish were monitored over a 14-d period for survival, surgical healing, injury occurrence and post-tagging behaviour. Even though we observed a 100% survival rate for both groups, with no noticeable buoyancy or swimming alteration, findings from...

Domestication and Temperature Modulate Gene Expression Signatures and Growth in the Australasian Snapper Chrysophrys auratus ArchiMer
Wellenreuther, Maren; Le Luyer, Jeremy; Cook, Denham; Ritchie, Peter A.; Bernatchez, Louis.
Identifying genes and pathways involved in domestication is critical to understand how species change in response to human-induced selection pressures, such as increased temperatures. Given the profound influence of temperature on fish metabolism and organismal performance, a comparison of how temperature affects wild and domestic strains of snapper is an important question to address. We experimentally manipulated temperature conditions for F1-hatchery and wild Australasian snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) for 18 days to mimic seasonal extremes and measured differences in growth, white muscle RNA transcription and hematological parameters. Over 2.2 Gb paired-end reads were assembled de novo for a total set of 33,017 transcripts (N50 = 2,804). We found...

Grow-out mariculture techniques in tropical waters: A case study of problems and solutions in Hong Kong. ArchiMer
Wu, R; Lee, J.
Raft culture is practised and trash fish is being used as feed in Hong Kong. Culture space is limited and most of the culture sites are over-crowded. Food conversion ratio is poor (about 10-15), grow-out mortality is high (30-50%) and fish kills caused by oxygen depletions, algal blooms and red tides occur frequently. Disease and water pollution are also problems.

Induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermation by LHRH or an LHRH analog associated or not with pimozide. Effects on some teleost fish. ArchiMer
Billard, R; Weil, C; Barnabe, G.
Effectiveness of LHRH and one of its analogs (LHRH-A = D-Ala super(6) ethylamide) on induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermiation is reviewed here. LHRH was also combined with pimozide, an anti-dopaminergic agent, to try to cancel dopamine inhibition of gonatotropin (GtH) release. LHRH-A alone (50 mu g/kg) did not initiate ovulation but only oocyte maturation. When pimozide (10 mg/kg) and LHRH-A (50 mu g/kg) were combined, gonadotropic hormone secretion was significantly increased, causing ovulation and stimulating spermiation. This combination advanced ovulation in trout. Trout egg quality was markedly altered by the pimozide treatment; it remains to be tested in carp. In sea bass, LHRH-A was much more effective than LHRH, and ovulation was...

ArchiMer
Rosecchi, E.
The four Sparidae studied are coastal species that regularly enter the Mediterranean coastal salt lagoons. Changes in diet with regard to size class of fish, and occasionally season, are detailed. For each species, diets in the sea and in the lagoons are compared using several methods and show differences. Individuals from lagoons do not eat, or in very low numbers, mollusks, echinoderms and decapods. However, as their feeding is very rich and diverse, sparid fishes can probably find in the lagoons, whatever their age, the prey necessary to their growth. Trophic factors cannot explain age structure in lagoons and the absence of some age classes.

ArchiMer
Man-wai, Rabenevanana; Quignard, Jean-pierre.
Age and growth of seabream D. sargus in the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea) were examined using scale reading. Growth was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's equation based on the estimation of total lengths at the time of annual ring formation. The growth in weight and the length-weight relationship were calculated for both sexes separately and combined during and after spawning periods. Preliminary investigations on the characteristics of commercial catches (from Sete and Grau-du-Roi commercial fishing grounds) were also carried out.

Pathology of marine warmwater finfish in Israel: Problems and research ArchiMer
Colorni, A.
A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells.

Problems related to the lack of functional swimbladder in intensive rearing of the seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and the sea bream Sparus auratus . ArchiMer
Chatain, Beatrice.
The primordial inflation of swimbladder normally occurs at a size of 4 to 5 mm in sea bream Sparus auratus and 5 to 6 mm in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax . However, in intensive larval rearing conditions, lack of inflation is often observed and leads to the production of up to 80% of postlarvae whose swimbladder is not functional. They are, on the average, 20-30% smaller in weight than normal fry. Their survival rate can also be reduced by any kind of stress such as weaning, handling or hypoxic conditions. It is suggested that the selective mortality which affects the abnormal fish results both from a decrease in predatory efficiency and an increase in energetic needs.

Kentouri, M; Divanach, P.
In aquaculture and particularly during fish larval rearing when the time between moment of stress application and the non-return point acquisition is very limited, criteria which may provide health state and stock evolution are of great importance. Now, in stress responce chronology, the specific behavioral scheme modification is first noted. This early identification, associated with initial conditions restoration, generaly do not involve after effects. Ethological knowledge beeing the basis of this for-casting strategy, the authors define in this study a simplified behavioral scheme of four sparid larval species in a range of physiological conditions.
