Drought is considered the main abiotic stress because it influences the distribution of plant species and limits the productivity of ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of drought on physiological and biochemical parameters during the initial development of Vatairea macrocarpa, a native cerrado species. Plants were subjected to daily watering (control); suppression of watering during 90 days with field capacity (fc) 50% and 25% and then followed by rewatering. Relative leaf water content (RWC), gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments content, carbohydrate and amino acids content, antioxidant activities and growth were recorded. The RWC decreased according to the soil water restriction, causing reduction in stomatal conductance and... |

ABSTRACT We aimed to determine the response of cidró (Aloysia triphylla) submitted to different water replacement levels in summer and winter, in order to understand and relate the plant physiological performance under adverse weather conditions. The research was developed in a protected environment, in the city of Frederico Westphalen, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, arranged in a 2x4x2 factorial scheme, two seasons of the year (summer and winter), four water availability (50, 75, 100, 125% of ETo) and two faces of leaf (abaxial and adaxial), with four replications. There were evaluated stomatal vapor diffusion resistance (s/cm), transpiration (µg/cm2/s) and leaf temperature (°C), on both faces of the... |

This study analyzes the relationship between the changes in the energy balance components and the muskmelon stomatal resistance under plastic mulch conditions. This experiment was conducted in a muskmelon crop with and without plastic mulch, from April to July, 1998. To measure the energy balance components (net radiation (Rn), latent heat flux LE, sensible heat flux H and surface soil flux G). Eddy covariancestations were used; one was located in the plastic mulch section and the otherin the section withno plastic mulch. Each stationconsisted offast response kryptonhygrometer, aonedimensionalsonic anemometer anda fine wirethermocouple. The stations also have a net radiometer, 2 soil heat flux plates and two soil thermocouples of 4 parallel ends. The... |

Ozone dry deposition measurements were carried out during approximately one year over a flat grass field in Portugal. The results show prominent diurnal and seasonal patterns in deposition flux, dry deposition velocity and surface resistance, especially for the daytime period. Dry deposition velocities vary diurnally from a minimum of 0.1 cm s-1, during the night to a maximum of 0.2-0.5 cm s-1 during the day. The observed canopy resistance (Rc) varies from values higher than 500 s m-1, at night, to a minimum of 200 s m-1, around noon. Seasonal variation is characterised by daytime Rc values much larger in summer than in winter and spring, while nighttime values do not show any evident seasonal pattern. This behaviour can be ascribed to the stomatal intake,... |

Three month old Coleus blumei plants in pots were treated with different NaCl concentrations: 0.00, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00%. To determine the water osmotic absorption, the plants had their stems cut at 10 cm from the soil surface. The remaining stems were linked to glass tubes by flexible rubber tubes. Readings of the water column level in the glass tubes were performed at each 30 minutes, corresponding to the water osmotic absorption, with a total of eleven readings. Other Coleus blumei, with the same age, received the NaCl concentrations, and were evaluated under field conditions in terms of transpiration and stomatal resistance. A randomized complete block analysis was used with five replications. An increase of osmotic absorption was verified for all... |
