A new species of dwarf sea bass, genus Serranus (Serranidae: Actinopterygii), from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean Neotropical Ichthyology
Carvalho Filho,Alfredo; Ferreira,Carlos Eduardo Leite.
Serranus aliceae n. sp. is described from Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo States, southeastern Brazilian coast. The species is readily distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: scales around the caudal peduncle 20 or 21; total gill rakers on first branchial arch 23-29; cheek-scales rows 5 or 6; and by the coloration of live specimens, which are reddish with a broad, conspicuous, white stripe from post-orbital region to the caudal-fin base and a white abdomen. The new species apparently inhabits the deeper (30 or more meters) portions of reef environments along the subtropical Brazilian coast, and is possibly associated with upwelling cold-water masses. The species was observed hovering above rocky bottoms, feeding on...

Considerations regarding the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii under low light availability in a low phosphorus lake Acta Botanica
Tonetta,Denise; Hennemann,Mariana Coutinho; Brentano,Débora Monteiro; Petrucio,Mauricio Mello.
ABSTRACTAlthough many studies have shown that the dispersion, increased abundance and dominance of cyanobacteria can be attributed to nutrient enrichment, we discuss features contributing to the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii in a shallow, polymictic, subtropical coastal lake with low phosphorus and light limitation (Peri Lake). The presence and dominance of C. raciborskii in an environment with such characteristics emphasizes the idea that nutrients alone do not explain the high density of this cyanobacterium. Other features should be considered in explaining this species dominance, such as phosphorus storage and physiological flexibilitywhich seem to be key features to high densities in low phosphorus systems.

Enchytraeid abundance in Araucaria Mixed Forest determined by cold and hot wet extraction. Repositório Alice
NIVA, C. C.; CEZAR, R. M.; FONSECA, P. M.; ZAGATTO, M. R. G.; OLIVEIRA, E. M.; BUSH, E. F.; CLASEN, L. A.; BROWN, G. G..
Enchytraeids are small oligochaetes found worldwide in soils with sufficient moisture and organic matter, but scarcely studied in the Southern hemisphere. This is the third study on enchytraeid abundance in Brazil using wet extraction and the first carried out in Araucaria Mixed Forest (subtropical region). The sampling and extraction were based on the standard method ISO 23611-3/2007 using an adapted split soil corer and wet extraction with and without heat to assess the abundance of enchytraeids in a forest fragment at Embrapa Forestry in Colombo, Paraná State. The samplings were performed in 3 occasions between September 2011 and April 2012. The average numbers estimated by each method varied from appr. 2.000-12.000 (cold) and 5.000-12.000 ind./ m2...

Invasion and establishment of Ceratium furcoides (Dinophyceae) in an urban lake in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Luiza Nicoleite da; Medeiros,Caroline Modena de; Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Cardoso,Luciana de Souza.
ABSTRACT Ceratium furcoides has received attention due its invasive behavior in South America and consequent alterations in local phytoplankton communities. Pedalinhos Lake had been dominated by chlorophytes until 2015, when the first occurrence of this dinoflagellate was detected. In order to investigate the colonization process of this species, we monitored the meteorological variables and phytoplankton abundance of this urban lake on a weekly basis from September 2015 to September 2018. At the beginning of the invasion process (Year 1), a peak density of 10,170 ind.mL-1 was recorded, with a significant decrease to 23 ind.mL-1, indicating an initial, unstable process of adaptation, with notable oscillation and reduction of cyanobacterial blooms. At this...

Morpho-physiological responses of a subtropical strain of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Cyanobacteria) to different light intensities Acta Botanica
Wojciechowski,Juliana; Fernandes,Luciano Felício; Fonseca,Fernanda Vitória Buck.
ABSTRACT The toxigenic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii previously restricted to tropical latitudes, has been increasingly reported in temperate lakes in recent decades. The causes of its biogeographical expansion are under investigation, but efficient physiological adaptation to changes in temperature and light regimes are likely to be involved. The present study evaluated the morpho-physiological responses of a strain of C. raciborskii from southern Brazil to nine light intensities, from 9 to 250 µmol photons m-2 s-1. Blooms of this cyanobacterium are regularly recorded in the region. Morpho-physiological responses were measured based on growth rate and trichome length. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii showed slow growth at low light...

Phenology of Bombus pennsylvanicus sonorus Say (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Central Mexico Neotropical Entomology
Di Trani de la Hoz,Juan.
We studied the seasonal activity of Bombus pennsylvanicus sonorus Say in subtropical conditions of the Mexican Central Plateau. Monthly during 1998, we recorded caste of active individuals (inferred form corporal size measured as wing length), presence and activity of reproductive individuals, and mating activity. Also, we recorded the flower plants used as resources. Subtropical conditions of the Mexican Central Plateau do not seem to modify phenological features of B. pennsylvanicus sonorus since the species presents annual colonies and a clearly defined period of inactivity. The size of individuals progressively increased between the first recorded activity period in middle April and the end of the colonies in November. Reproductive bees were observed...

Seasonal budgets of organic matter in the Ubatuba shelf system, SE Brazil. I. Planktonic and benthic components ArchiMer
Rocha, Gra; Rossi-wongtschowski, Cldb; Pires-vanin, Ams; Jarre-teichmann, A.
Planktonic and benthic productivity and consumption were estimated to assess the availability of food to higher trophic-level consumers in the Ubatuba ecosystem on the SE coast of Brazil. The study area included waters from 10 to 100 m deep and covered 3800 km(2). The trophic compartments of the system were established on ecologically or taxonomically related species, considering their relative abundance and similarity of diets and habits. The compartments are phytoplankton, zooplankton, salps, bacterioplankton, cnidaria, polyplacophora, mollusca, carnivorous benthos, detritivorous polychaetes, other detritivorous benthos, penaeidea-caridea, brachyura, and echinodermata. Biomass, production, and consumption were estimated in summer and winter. Plankton...
