Rubber production is dependent on the availability of carbohydrates in the tissues engaged in latex synthesis. In this study three rubber tree clones were used to study the protein profile, the activities of invertase and sucrose synthase in the latex and anatomical characteristics of the bark, as well as to establish a possible relationship with latex production. The clones used in the study, RRIM 600, GT 1 and Fx2261, differed in latex productivity, from high to low in this order. Although present, few differences were observed in the latex protein profile obtained by denaturing electrophoresis. Coffee fruits grown in shade are characterized by larger bean size than those grown under full-sun conditions. The present study assessed the effects of shade on bean characteristics and sugar metabolism by analyzing tissue development, sugar contents, activities of sucrose metabolizing enzymes and expression of sucrose synthase-encoding genes in fruits of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) plants submitted to full-sun (FS) and shade (SH) conditions. México es centro de origen del tomate de cáscara (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.), el cual ocupa el quinto lugar entre las especies hortícolas. A pesar de su importancia, la investigación que existe en esta especie aún es escasa, particularmente la relacionada con la producción y deterioro de semilla. La presente investigación se llevó a cabo en tres fases. En la primera se estudió la actividad de las enzimas sacarosa sintasa e invertasa acida durante el desarrollo de la semilla y se correlacionó con la evolución de los parámetros de calidad de semillas. ABSTRACT The flavor quality of citrus fruits is largely determined by the sugar-acid ratio, but it remains uncertain how sugar- and/or acid-metabolizing enzymes regulate the sugar-acid ratio of navel oranges and further affect the fruit quality. In the present study, Robertson navel oranges (Citrus sinesis Osb.) were collected from six representative habitats in three eco-regions of Sichuan, China. In this study, we investigated more particularly the sucrose synthase (Susy: EC2.4.1.13) at the biochemical and molecular levels during the development of coffee fruits. In addition, feeding experiments with 14C-sucrose and incubation of fruits with 14CO2 were carried out. Our results suggest that Susy is the main enzyme responsible for sucrose metabolism in coffee fruits. In the pulp and endosperm of fruits at the last stage of maturation, a peak of Susy activity was observed and correlates with an increase of sucrose. At the molecular level, we cloned two cDNAs encoding different Susy isoforms.
