A AMAZONIA E O MERCADO DE CARBONO AgEcon

A comparative study of production performance and animal health practices in organic and conventional dairy systems. Repositório Alice
SILVA, J. B.; FAGUNDES, G. M.; SOARES, J. P. G.; FONSECA, A. H.; MUIR, J. P..
Health and production management strategies influence environmental impacts of dairies. The objective of this paper was to measure risk factors on health and production parameters on six organic and conventional bovine, caprine, and ovine dairy herds in southeastern Brazil over six consecutive years (2006?2011). The organic operations had lower milk production per animal (P≤0.05), lower calf mortality (P≤0.05), less incidence of mastitis (P≤0.05), fewer rates of spontaneous abortions (P≤0.05), and reduced ectoparasite loads (P≤0.05) compared to conventional herds and flocks. Organic herds, however, had greater prevalence of internal parasitism (P≤0.05) than conventional herds. In all management...

A fenntarthatóság felé való átmenet lehetőségei Magyarországon AgEcon
Palvolgyi, Tamas; Csete, Maria.
A Kárpát-medence páratlan természeti kincseit számos veszély fenyegeti. E veszély elhárítására adhat megoldást a fenntartható fejlődés, melynek ugyan az elmúlt négy évtizedben széles körű szakirodalma jött létre, de világszerte gyengék a gyakorlati eredményei. A jelen tanulmány a gyakorlati megvalósítás, a fenntarthatóság felé való átmenet magyar útját vizsgálja a következő feltételek megvalósításával: 1. 2. A társadalom fenntarthatóság iránti igényének felkeltése. 3. A magyar gazdaság szuverenitását több, egymással is összefüggő függőségi helyzet gyengíti. A fenntarthatóság gazdasági feltételrendszere érdekében, a helyi adottságokat figyelembe vevő lokális gazdaság...

A fenntarthatóság mérése az erdőgazdaságban AgEcon
Somogyi, Zoltan.

A Guide to Oceans, Coasts, and Islands at the World Summit on Sustainable Development. OceanDocs
Vandeweerd, V.; Bernal, P.; Belfiore, S.; Goldstein, K.; Cicin-Sain, B..
Oceans, coasts, and islands are essential to global sustainable development. The oceans, comprising 72% of the earth’s surface, play an essential life-support function without which life on earth would not be possible. 50% of the world’s population lives in coastal areas, and 44 of the world’s nations are small island developing States (SIDS) which are especially dependent on the oceans. Human populations everywhere depend on the oceans for food, energy, transportation, tourism, and other uses. Oceans, coasts, and islands thus do not represent a special or sectoral interest and concern—they are essential to global well-being. Achieving sustainable development in oceans, coasts, and islands thus would go a long way towards achieving global sustainable...

A Methodology for Assessing National Sustainable Development Strategies AgEcon
Cherp, Aleg; George, Clive; Kirkpatrick, Colin.
At the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, governments undertook to develop and adopt national sustainable development strategies as a key component of implementing the goals of Agenda 21. Only partial progress was reported at the 2002 World Summit in Johannesburg, with uncertainty as to the effectiveness of those strategies that had been introduced. This paper describes a methodology for assessing a country's progress in implementing a national sustainable development strategy for (NSDS) and for identifying potential areas for improvement. Five key principles of sustainable development and strategic planning are identified, and a set of assessment criteria are proposed for each principle. The results of applying the methodology in two Eastern European countries,...

A Performance Analysis of the Supply of Public Goods in Rural Communities Based on the System Implementation Costs - Taking Chongren county Bailu village, Taihe County Yongchang village as examples AgEcon
Zheng, Shuang-sheng.
Based on the survey of Chongren county Bailu village, Taihe county Yongchang village and by focusing on the system implementation costs, the public goods is divided into tangible products and intangible products these 2 parts to carry out a perfomance analysis of the supply of public goods in rural communities. It points out that in both the well-acquainted and rare-acquainted communities in rural areas there are some long-existing informal systems, such as religions. Because of their born nature, the system implementation costs are relatively lower. However, the implementation costs of the embedded foreign systems are relatively higher because of their weaker lasting features and the rare social basis. Therefore, proposing putting the efficient supply of...

A Perspective on the Evolution of e-Dialogues Concerning Interdisciplinary Research on Sustainable Development in Canada Ecology and Society
Dale, Ann; Royal Roads University; ann.dale@royalroads.ca.
Sustainable development research is inherently interdisciplinary; it requires the conscious search for unifying concepts that foster and reinforce understanding across disciplines. In addition, the number of sectors and actors involved in potential solutions requires a multistakeholder approach to decision making. The challenge of sustainable development research increasingly presents itself as a problem-solving activity. It involves producing useful knowledge through applied research. It is normative and not value-free. It involves complex issues of polity and culture. Thus, sustainable development research needs novel methods for research, for bringing together expertise that crosses disciplines and sectors, and for informing policy development. It also...

A Systems Approach Framework for Coastal Zones Ecology and Society
Hopkins , Tom S; Institute for Marine Coastal Environment-CNR, Naples, Italy; tom_hopkins@ncsu.edu; Bailly, Denis; University of Brest, Brest, France; Denis.Bailly@univ-brest.fr.
This Special Feature Volume examines the potential value of the Systems Approach Framework (SAF) as a methodological framework for the transition to sustainable development in coastal zones. This article provides insight on the Systems Approach, the theory behind it, and how its practical application to coastal zone systems (CZSs) was developed. The SAF is about information for management through a focus on how to generate a higher, dynamic level of information about complex CZSs and how to render this information more useful to end users through a participatory suite of communication methods. The SAF is an open research methodology that investigates the function of systems in order to simulate specific issues or questions concerning their function. The...

A Systems Approach Framework for the Transition to Sustainable Development: Potential Value Based on Coastal Experiments Ecology and Society
Hopkins , Tom S.; North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA; CNR Institute for Coastal Marine Environment, Naples, Italy; tom_hopkins@ncsu.edu; Bailly, Denis; University of Brest, Brest, France; Denis.Bailly@univ-brest.fr; Elmgren, Ragnar; Stockholm University; ragnar.elmgren@ecology.su.se; Glegg, Gillian; Plymouth Marine Station; G.Glegg@plymouth.ac.uk; Sandberg , Audun ; ; audun.sandberg@hibo.no.
This article explores the value of the Systems Approach Framework (SAF) as a tool for the transition to sustainable development in coastal zone systems, based on 18 study sites in Europe, where the SAF was developed and tested. The knowledge gained from these experiments concerns the practical aspects of (a) governance in terms of policy effectiveness, (b) sustainability science in terms of applying transdisciplinary science to social–ecological problems, and (c) simulation analysis in terms of quantifying dysfunctions in complex systems. This new knowledge can help broaden our perspectives on how research can be changed to better serve society. The infusion of systems thinking into research and policy making leads to a preference for...

A Vertical and Horizontal Comparison of Sustainable Development Status in Western China from the Perspective of Ecological Footprint AgEcon
Du, Hui-ying; Dong, Hong-lin; Jin, Bo.
On the basis of ecological footprint theory, the ecological footprint and ecological carrying capacity of western China and 12 provinces and cities in 2009 are calculated. From the perspective of ecological footprint, the sustainable development status of west China and 12 provinces and cities in 2009 and 1999 are compared vertically and horizontally. Results assume that no matter weighting by using local or national ecological carrying capacity, the west area laid in the unsustainable development state in 2009; in 1999, the west area was on the unsustainable development stage taking the local and national level as the reference and it was at the sustainable stage at the global level. In 2009, most provinces in western China laid on the unsustainable stage...

Accumulative Pollution, "Clean Technology," and Policy Design AgEcon
Withagen, Cees; Toman, Michael.
Environmental policymakers must address the adverse effects of a number of pollutants that accumulate in the environment. Goals for the regulation of these damages often involve holding long-term emissions below a level deemed to be "dangerous", or outright banning of offending products or processes along with subsidization of more "green" alternatives. This paper builds upon previous studies by Keeler, Spence, and Zeckhauser (1971) and Tahvonen and Withagen (1996) in addressing the optimal long-term management of an accumulative but assimilatable pollutant through policies that restrict more damaging production processes and thereby induce more benign alternatives. Using a simple general equilibrium approach, we consider the possibility that the...

The new sustainable development data repository requires new analysis grids, in particular for factors accounted for in productive system typologies. This paper, based on the aquaculture example, analyses the diversity in aquaculture systems with respect to sustainable development. Various typologies are obtained by evaluating structural and functional approaches integrating variables related to production and regulation systems and to the territorial insertion of fish farms. Categories have been defined on a scale based on a set of five sites, which are representative of a wider range of aquaculture systems. Use of these categories goes beyond the local typologies and prepares a generic meta-typology classification for the systems. This generic...

Gilmour, Alistair; Macquarie University; agilmour@gse.mq.edu.au; Walkerden, Greg; Wyong Shire Council; gregw@acay.com.au; Scandol, James; University of Sydney; jscandol@bio.usyd.edu.au.
Our group at Macquarie University has run three adaptive management projects in New South Wales, Australia. Their objectives were: (1) to evaluate water cycle management strategies to minimize impacts of urban development on water quality in the Hawkesbury-Nepean basin; (2) to evaluate development planning policies to minimize water quality impacts on a series of coastal lakes; and (3) to carry out a preliminary assessment of the potential impacts of greater recreational use of Sydney water catchments. These projects are examined to evaluate the contribution of the adaptive management approach to water cycle management on the urban fringe in New South Wales. The role of the adaptive management approach in education, as a negotiation process, and in policy...

RODRIGUES, G. S.; RODRIGUES, I. A.; IRIAS, L. J. M.; CAMPANHOLA, C..
Emprego, ii. Renda, iii.
