Conflicts Associated with Dam Removal in Sweden Ecology and Society
The increasing number of deteriorating old dams that need renovation or have lost their function make dam removal a viable management option. There are at least four major reasons for dam removal: safety, law and policy, economy, and ecology. Here we discuss 17 Swedish dams that were recently considered for removal. Because dam removal usually causes controversy, dam removal initiatives may succeed, fail, or result in a compromise such as a bypass channel for migrating fish. We identify and discuss three major obstructions to dam removal: funding, cultural-historical values, and threatened species. To facilitate dam removal, the reasons for, and the effects of, dam removal must be carefully explained, and the public and stakeholders must be kept...

Eco-Labelling, the State and Consumer Confidence Organic Eprints
Sønderskov, Kim Mannemar; Daugbjerg, Carsten.
Trustworthy eco-labels provide consumers with valuable information on environmentally friendly products and thus promote green consumerism. But what makes an eco-label trustworthy and what can government do to increase consumer confidence? The scant existing literature seems to argue that low governmental involvement increases confidence. According to this, government should just provide the basic legal framework for eco-labelling and leave the rest to non-governmental organizations. However, the empirical underpinning of this recommendation is insufficient. This paper analyses consumer confidence in different organic food labelling regimes with varying degrees of governmental involvement. Using unique and detailed survey data from USA, United Kingdom,...

First record of fish microfossils from Ramsåsa, site C, Skåne, southern Sweden Naturalis
Vergoossen, J.M.J..
Within the thelodont dominated fauna of Ramsåsa, site C, Skåne, southern Sweden (Ludlow, Whitcliffian), the scales of the Thelodus parvidens group outnumber those of the combined T. sculptilis-T. admirabilis groups, some specimens of which are indistinguishable. Scale forms that might belong to one of several Thelodus taxa are designated as forma baltica (new form), forma T. radiosus Lehman, and forma T. ramosus Lehman, whereas forma T. querceus Lehman is introduced to cover a particular (heterogeneous?) group of monocuspid scales previously assigned to T. trilobatus Hoppe. Among the acanthodians, Nostolepis striata scales predominate. The checklist of N. striata trunk scales is extended to 62 characters. The smallest nostolepid teeth known so far are...

Fish microfossils from Ramsåsa, site E, Scania, southern Sweden (mid Palaeozoic) Naturalis
Vergoossen, J.M.J..
Material from three pieces of rock from Ramsåsa, site E, was divided into size fractions 0.106, 0.212, 0.355, 0.425 and 0.5 mm. Larger sizes were absent. The three assemblages were examined and compared with each other, also per fraction, and with residue samples from site E. The latter are proportionately not representative of the faunas of which they must have been part, specimens measuring 0.5 mm or more. The residue labels refer to Ørvig and his student Peyel. The results of the comparison between the assemblages from the rocks and from the residues are hardly complementary. Thelodont scales were obtained almost exclusively from the pieces of rock; acanthodian ‘modified trunk’ scales, spines and jawbones and rare birkeniid remains were restricted to...

I HÄNDELSERNAS CENTRUM 2001.

Koberwitz (Kobierzyce): In the footsteps of Rudolf Steiner Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
“Now once again we have made a great step forward!” exclaimed Rudolf Steiner on the drive back from Koberwitz. Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) can fairly be regarded as the birthplace of biodynamic agriculture. Rudolf Steiner delivered eight lectures at the Koberwitz Chateau (Schloss Koberwitz) in German in the summer of 1924 (7-16 June). There were 111 attendees, 30 women and 81 men, who came from six countries: Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Sweden. The audience included farmers, estate managers, doctors, priests, teachers, artists, and engineers who all came to hear Steiner’s vision for agriculture. A witness observed “Seldom have I seen him so joyfully moved after the completion of a task as in this moment after the agricultural...

Late Silurian fish microfossils from Klinta and Rinnebäcks Bro (Scania, south Sweden), with remarks on the morphology of Nostolepis striata trunk scales Naturalis
Vergoossen, J.M.J..
The microvertebrate faunas from ten small pieces of rock from the Öved Sandstone Formation at Klinta (1-10) yielded osteostracan, heterostracan, thelodont, and acanthodian remains, dated here as Whitcliffian. The most important age indicators are the heterostracan Archegonaspis and the thelodont zonal fossil Thelodus sculptilis. The latter taxon is also present in a small Whitcliffian fauna from the Öved Sandstone Formation at Rinnebäcks bro, together with other thelodont and acanthodian remains. From Rinnebäcks bro no previous records of Silurian fish fossils exist. In an attempt to gain a better understanding of nostolepid trunk scale variation and to develop an instrument to assess this variation, seven Nostolepis striata trunk scales from Klinta are...

Late Silurian fish microfossils from Ramsåsa (sites D and ‘south of church’), Skåne, south Sweden Naturalis
Vergoossen, J.M.J..
The microvertebrate assemblages from Ramsåsa sites D and ‘south of church’, Skåne, south Sweden are described for the first time. Analysis of these microvertebrate assemblages from the Öved Sandstone Formation of Skåne indicates a Ludlow rather than Pridoli age. One of two faunas from Ramsåsa site D contained the zonal fossil Thelodus sculptilis and the other T. sculptilis in association with Paralogania ludlowiensis and Thelodus carinatus. The presence of T. carinatus is the youngest record of this species in Laurussia, and indicative of the transitional phase between the Andreolepis hedei and T. sculptilis Zones of the East Baltic Microvertebrate Standard. A fauna with Thelodus parvidens, from south of Ramsåsa church, proved only broadly datable as...

Local Consequences of Applying International Norms: Differences in the Application of Forest Certification in Northern Sweden, Northern Finland, and Northwest Russia Ecology and Society
Tysiachniouk, Maria; Centre for Independent Social Research, St. Petersburg, Russia; tysiachn@indepsocres.spb.ru.
Forest certification, developed in the early 1990s, is a process in which independent assessors grant use of the certification label to producers who meet certain environmental and social criteria set for their forest products. This label was quickly seen to offer a market advantage and to signal corporate social and environmental responsibility. This paper focuses on international norms pertaining to environmental and indigenous rights, as manifested in cases of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)-compatible certification, and how these norms have been applied domestically and perceived locally in different states. Case studies are drawn from northern Sweden, northern Finland, and three...

Local Management Practices for Dealing with Change and Uncertainty: A Cross-scale Comparison of Cases in Sweden and Tanzania Ecology and Society
Belfrage, Kristina; Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences; Kristina.Belfrage@lbutv.slu.se.
We investigated and compared management practices for dealing with uncertainty in agroecosystem dynamics in two cases of smallholder farming in different parts of the world: northeast Tanzania and east-central Sweden. Qualitative research methods were applied to map farmers' practices related to agroecosystem management. The practices are clustered according to a framework of ecosystem services relevant for agricultural production and discussed using a theoretical model of ecosystem dynamics. Almost half of the identified practices were found to be similar in both cases, with similar approaches for adjusting to and dealing with local variability and disturbance. Practices that embraced the ecological roles of wild as well as domesticated flora and fauna...

Outcomes and Determinants of Success of a Performance Payment Scheme for Carnivore Conservation AgEcon
Zabel, Astrid; Bostedt, Goran; Engel, Stefanie.
This paper presents a first empirical assessment of carnivore conservation under a performance payment scheme. The Swedish government issues payments to reindeer herder villages based on the number of carnivore offspring certified on their pastures. The villages decide on the internal use and distribution of the payments. It is generally assumed that benefit distribution rules are exogenously given. We develop a model to investigate such rules as endogenous decision. The empirical data reveals that villages’ group size has a direct negative effect on conservation outcomes. However, there is also an indirect positive effect which impacts conservation outcomes through the benefit distribution rule. This result revises the general collective action hypothesis...

Performance payments for carnivore conservation in Sweden AgEcon
Zabel, Astrid; Holm-Muller, Karin.
Solving carnivore-livestock conflicts is essential if goals to preserve biodiversity conservation are taken seriously and livelihoods especially of poor livestock owners are to be safeguarded. This paper presents an innovative performance payment approach for carnivore conservation, that has been successfully implemented in Sweden. Performance payments are made to reindeer herding Sami villages for certified carnivore offspring on the villages’ territories. First results support the assumption that this approach has the potential to solve many problems inherent to conventional compensation schemes. A well designed common pool regime is deemed necessary to direct the incentives set by the internal distribution of the performance payments toward collective...

Research in Organic Food and Farming. Reports on organisation and conduction of research programmes in 11 European countries Organic Eprints
This publication represents reports on the organization and conduction of research programmes in 11 European countries involved in the ERA-NET/1/CA-SSA-B No 011716 ”CORE Organic” (Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Food and Farming, Project no 011716). This publication evolved as a comprehensive project output but it is not a deliverable as such. Due to the genesis of research in Organic Food & Farming the present scientific resources in Europe are still scattered. A cross-border aggregation of these resources will help to reach a higher relevance of organic agriculture and a fortifi cation of the involved benefi ts for rural development, environment and consumers. These benefits are more and more acknowledged by policy...

Resilience assessment: a useful approach to navigate urban sustainability challenges Ecology and Society
Sellberg, My M.; Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University, Sweden; my.sellberg@su.se; Wilkinson, Cathy; Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University, Sweden; wilkinson_cathy@yahoo.com.au; Peterson, Garry D.; Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University, Sweden; garry.peterson@su.se.
Cities and towns have become increasingly interested in building resilience to cope with surprises, however, how to do this is often unclear. We evaluated the ability of the Resilience Assessment Workbook to help urban areas incorporate resilience thinking into their planning practice by exploring how a resilience assessment process complemented existing planning in the local government of Eskilstuna, Sweden. We conducted this evaluation using participant observation, semistructured interviews, and a survey of the participants. Our findings show that the resilience assessment contributed to ongoing planning practices by addressing sustainability challenges that were not being addressed within the normal municipal planning or operations, such as local food...
