In the UE-ORSTOM-CP-UAT-UG research program about rehabilitation of Mexican tepetates, one of the problems is to control soil erosion and productivity of these new soils. The caracterization of rainfall in relation to its occurence, quantity, energy, etc. is fundamental. This paper shows the results of the analysis of 4 years of precipitations measured with a pluviograph on the study area, and the processing of these data with soft-wares pertaining to ORSTOM (PLUVIOM and ARES). The purpose of this study is to precise the conditions of agricultural reclamation of tepetate in the eastern part of the Mexico valley (Texcoco). The Tepetate is a compact and sterile material. The lack of nitrogen, carbon and the poor biological activity limit the possibility of plant development. But after the use of heavy machinery and terracing, it is possible, under certain conditions, to use this new soil for agriculture. The degree of fragmentation and irregularity of tepetate areas can be measured with fractal parameters. A lot of different empirical fractal dimensions can be used with this purposed. Some of these dimensions were estimated and compared in the present work. The tepetates lineal and mass fractal dimensions were independent of the scale of measurement. These data indicate the near ideal fractal dimensionality of tepetate areas. The doble value of lineal fractal dimension was similar to the mass fractal dimension. The tepetate surface fractal dimensions indicate the considerable irregularities of tepetate areas boundaries related with advanced erosion in the studied area. (Résumé d'auteur) |

The tepetates of Mexico Highlands are indurated horizons with fragipan pr0perties. Tepetates appear among pyroclastic deposits (T1, T2, T3). A soil profile located near Texcoco, Mexico, including tepetate layers was studied. Mineralogical and microscopical features of this profile were studied using a series of methods. This report the main results of the study. Tepetates were characterized by several features: first, the nature of their parent material; second, a close matrix microstructure and third, their colloidal fraction. The latter is conformed mainly by laminated 1:1 to 2:1 mixed layer minerals made of flaky layers. These features can explain the fragipan properties of tepetates and most of their mechanical behaviour. (Résumé d'auteur). |

Au Mexique, sur le haut plateau central, dans les Etats de Mexico et de Tlaxcala, l'érosion a fait affleurer des horizons indurés de sols volcaniques, appelés "tepetates". Une étude de la restauration de sols agricoles sur ces matériaux stériles et de leur conservation a été réalisée. L'étude concerne notamment les propriétés des tepetates qui limitent l'infiltration de l'eau et leur fertilité ainsi que celles qui sont favorables à la restauration d'un sol agricole fertile et stable. The reclamation of volcanic indurated soils called tepetates in Mexico must control soil erosion and generate a good productivity of these new soils according to a sustainable development strategy. This paper shows the results of an european research program involving ORSTOM and the Colegio de Postgraduados en Agrociencias in the eastern part of valley of Mexico (Texcoco). Different systems of culture have been studied (mono/associated culture, with/without manure, soil/tepetate, natural/cultivated tepetate, tepetate with deep/normal subsoiling, tillage practice) during four years on 8 large terraces (700 m2). Because of the imprecision of the known surface and the real distribution of the tepetates along the neovolcanic belt, as well as the agro-socio-economical problems that cause the presence of this volcanic indurated level in the fields, we proposed to test a methodology which use both teledetection and GIS on 1/25000 scale to identify the area with tepetates. This work, based on previous knowledge of the conditions of apparition of the tepetates, natural as well as anthropogenic reasons, could precise if this information determined in the Mexico and Tlaxcala valleys are also good for the rest of the neovolcanic belt. L'érodibilité des tepetates (horizons indurés de sols volcaniques mis à nu par érosion du sol) réhabilités en sols agricoles, a été étudiée dans la vallée de Mexico au cours de deux programmes successifs (1989-92 et à partir de 1994) de l'Union Européenne au Mexique. Outre la mesure des pluies, du ruissellement et des pertes en terre, une observation a été faite de l'évolution des états de surface sur des parcelles de tepetate et de sol billonnées et plantées en maïs, ou laissées à nu. Ces observations, sur des peties parcelles "Wischmeier" (44 m2) en 1991 ou des terrasses de 500 m2 en 1994, ont été faites selon la méthode de Casenave et Valentin (1989).
