Dietary cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) were reported to exhibit in vitro toxicity toward vascular cells. The aim of this study was to determine whether dietary COPs induce in vivo toxicity toward coronary arteries and to evaluate their effect on the coronary reactivity. Golden Syrian hamsters were fed either a normolipidic diet or a hyperlipidic diet with or without a mixture of COPs (1.4 mg/kg/day). At the end of the feeding periods, cardiac mitochondria and cytosol were prepared to determine the subcellular distribution of cytochrome c. Differential involvement of the five RNA helicases in adaptation of Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 to low growth temperatures Inra

Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 possesses five RNA helicase-encoding genes overexpressed under cold growth conditions. Out of the five corresponding mutants, only the {Delta}cshA, {Delta}cshB, and {Delta}cshC strains were cold sensitive. Growth of the {Delta}cshA strain was also reduced at 30°C but not at 37°C. The cold phenotype was restored with the cshA gene for the {Delta}cshA strain and partially for the {Delta}cshB strain but not for the {Delta}cshC strain, suggesting different functions at low temperature

Experimental-study of the impact of hydrocarbons on the intertidal benthic community - the mahakam delta (east kalimantan, indonesia) ArchiMer

Two simulated oil-spills in the Mahakam delta revealed the consequences of this type of pollution on the site's main benthic populations. The results of these trials differentiated between short-term (high toxicity similar to chemical pollution) and long-term effects (similar to organic pollution) of hydrocarbons. Two factors affected the distribution of the main macrofaunal species: intertidal height and degree of pollution. The latter was measured either by the initial quantity of oil spilled or by concentrations measured at each sampling. Experiments on the poisoning of honeybees by insecticidal and fungicidal sprays used in orchards National Institute of Agronomic Research

Losses of bees by poisoning have been greatly increased in recent years by the growing practice of applying insecticidal and fungicidal sprays to fruit trees. Preliminary laboratory tests showed that, of the common constituents of spray mixtures, only lead arsenate and flowers of sulphur were likely to cause serious honeybee poisoning, though Derris emulsion may cause slight poisoning. Syrup containing lime sulphur, nicotine sulphate, or copper sulphate was strongly repellent to the bees. It seemed possible that spray mixtures might be made repellent to the honeybee by the addition of suitable substances. Further trials showed that lead arsenate solution, at least in the concentrations normally used, was no more attractive to the bee than distilled water....

Un inventaire de l’entomofaune lié aux stocks de voandzou a été réalisé à partir d’échantillons collectés dans six localités du Sud du Togo. L’identification des espèces a permis de noter la présence de Callosobruchus subinnotatus, le déprédateur habituel des stocks de voandzou et de Callosobruchus maculatus, qui est habituellement considéré comme le ravageur majeur des stocks de niébé. Selon les localités, les effectifs de C. subinnotatus représentent 0,24 à 4% seulement des effectifs d’insectes ravageurs sur le voandzou. Parmi les insectes identifiés, on note également la présence d’un parasitoïde solitaire nympholarvophage de bruches dont l’effectif est faible.Une évaluation de l’activité reproductrice de C. subinnotatus a été réalisée en faisant varier...

The NRAMP6 metal transporter contributes to cadmium toxicity Inra

NRAMP (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein) homologues are evolutionarily conserved bivalent metal transporters. In Arabidopsis, AtNRAMP3 and AtNRAMP4 play a key role in iron nutrition of the germinating plantlet by remobilizing vacuolar iron stores. In the present paper we describe the molecular and physiological characterization of AtNRAMP6. AtNRAMP6 is predominantly expressed in the dry seed embryo and to a lesser extent in aerial parts. Its promoter activity is found diffusely distributed in cotyledons and hypocotyl, as well as in the vascular tissue region of leaf and flower.
