An integrated Bayesian modeling approach for the growth of Indian Ocean yellowfin tuna ArchiMer
Dortel, Emmanuelle; Sardenne, Fany; Bousquet, N.; Rivot, Etienne; Million, Julien; Le Croizier, Gael; Chassot, Emmanuel.
The Indian Ocean Tuna Tagging Program provided a unique opportunity to collect demographic data on the key commercially targeted tropical tuna species in the Indian Ocean. In this paper, we focused on estimating growth rates for one of these species, yellowfin (Thunnus albacares). Whilst most growth studies only draw on one data source, in this study we use a range of data sources: individual growth rates derived from yellowfin that were tagged and recaptured, direct age estimates obtained through otolith readings, and length-frequency data collected from the purse seine fishery between 2000 and 2010. To combine these data sources, we used an integrated Bayesian model that allowed us to account for the process and measurement errors associated with each...

Analysis of Tag Recoveries in Mauritius (1988-1993) and Presentation of Codification Procedure in Use OceanDocs
Cayré, P.; Norungee, D.; Lim Shung, C..
Tagging is considered an excellent tool for estimating the importance of interactions and competition between fisheries as well as to study tuna stocks and migrations. The Regional Tuna Project of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) conducted five tagging cruises in the western Indian Ocean, during which 955 fishes were tagged. Out of the total number tagged 15 were recaptured. Tuna tagging in the Indian Ocean was also undertaken by the Indo- Pacific Tuna Programme and by the Japanese National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries. 39 tuna marked by these organisations were recovered in Mauritius. Analysis of data collected from the tag recoveries provide some preliminary estimates of growth rate and migration of tuna. Tagging is the most direct method to...

Assessment of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) stock delimitation in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel based on mark-recapture and genetic data ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon; Morizur, Yvon; Lambert, E; Bonhomme, Francois; Guinand, B.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fisheries are becoming increasingly abundant along eastern Atlantic coastlines, especially in the ICES sub-areas IV, VII and VIII, but they are still not being managed by the European Union TAC (Total Allowed Catches) system. Scientific information about these sea bass stocks is limited, but the fishery is currently managed or modelled based upon these data, separated into the ICES divisions. Clearly, failure to manage satisfactorily the fishery may lead to a decline in stocks. We therefore investigated the structure of Atlantic sea bass populations at eight microsatellite loci in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel and, additionally, at five selected loci in Ireland and Scotland. Genetic data showed no significant...

Blockage of migration routes by dam construction: can migratory fish find alternative routes? Neotropical Ichthyology
Antonio,Rosimeire Ribeiro; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Pelicice,Fernando Mayer; Bailly,Dayani; Okada,Edson Kioshi; Dias,João Henrique Pinheiro.
The present study explored the interaction between the upriver migration of fish and the blockage of their migration routes by dam construction. Specifically, we studied (i) the capacity of migratory fish to locate alternative routes in the presence of an obstacle, and (ii) the behavior of the fish after they were artificially transferred to the reservoir. With the use of the mark-recapture technique (tagging), the study was carried out near Porto Primavera Dam (UHE Engenheiro Sérgio Motta) between 1994 and 1999, a period prior to the closure of the floodgates and the installation and operation of the fish pass facilities. The fish were caught in the dam forebay downstream, marked with LEA type tags, and released upstream (5113 individuals; 14 species) and...

Consequences of bias in age estimation on assessment of the northern stock of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and on management advice ArchiMer
Bertignac, Michel; De Pontual, Helene.
The results of a pilot tagging study on hake (Merluccius merluccius), conducted in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay in 2002, indicate that growth rates for this stock may be currently underestimated because of biased estimates of age. The impact that such a bias may have on the stock dynamics and the trends of the key population parameters, recruitment, spawning-stock biomass (SSB), and mortality are investigated. Assuming new growth parameters, a new age-length key is derived and used to produce and catch-at-age data and abundance indices, which are then used to assess the stock. Bias in estimating age affects the absolute levels of fishing mortality and stock biomass estimates, and also impacts the trend in SSB. However, trends in fishing mortality...

Contribution a l'etude de la biologie du crabe-tourteau Cancer pagurus sur les cotes de Bretagne sud. ArchiMer
Le Foll, Anne.
The study of the crab Cancer pagurus , along the Brittany coast, has revealed new information about its movements, growth and reproduction. The 1439 crab tagging has been effected either on land using the Edwards technique "suture-tag" or onboard using a similar technique to the Gundersen method of "toggle-tag". The results confirm that males are relatively sedentary, the females migrate more. To estimate growth, the author used the "capture-recapture" method and the results from crab rearing. It appeared that the molt increment is not constant and generally, so the molt frequency, it percentage decreases when the size increases.

Aloncle, Henri; Delaporte, Francis.
In this, the 2nd part of a study of Thunnus alalunga in the north-east Atlantic, populations and migrations are considered. The term 'population' is defined. The utilization of H. fusca as a biological 'marker' is considered and tagging experiments are described. Modal classes are examined: summary analysis, detailed analysis of fisheries. Internal temps and regulation are studied. The types of watering are defined and described and a statistical analysis as a function of the watering is made. An attempt at synthesis is made: Azorian, standard. Migratory determinism is examined.

A research programm on the marine green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting on the two major reproduction sites for the species in the Indian Ocean, conducled over last 15 years, included intensive tagging programm. Processing of these lagging data provides estimations of adult female populations {or each site and season from two independent methods. First classical method is the ratio of total number of nests produced over a define time on the mean individual number of nests by female during the same time (November, December, January). The computed mean individual number ranges from 3 to 3.5 obtained over 2 to 3 months. The second method is the multiple capture-recapture method (JOLLY, 1965; SEBER, 1965; MANLY, 1984). Evidence of underestimation of European hake growth in the Bay of Biscay, and its relationship with bias in the agreed method of age estimation ArchiMer
De Pontual, Helene; Groison, Anne-laure; Pineiro, Carmen; Bertignac, Michel.
In 2002, a pilot experiment on hake tagging was carried out using methodology specifically developed to catch and handle fish in,good condition. By the end of 2005, 36 hake and five tags had been returned to the laboratory (a 3.1% return rate) with a maximum time at liberty of 1066 days. The somatic growth of the recoveries proved to be twofold higher than that expected from published von Bertalanffy growth functions for the species in the Bay of Biscay. The growth underestimation was related to age overestimation, as demonstrated by two independent analyses. The first was based on a blind interpretation of marked otoliths conducted independently by two European experts involved in the routine age estimation of hake. The result shows that the age estimates...

Growth of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lions based on conventional tagging ArchiMer
Mellon-duval, Capucine; De Pontual, Helene; Metral, Luisa; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of European hake was estimated from the results of a conventional tagging study in the Gulf of Lions, the first tagging experiment to have been undertaken on the species in Mediterranean waters. In all, 4277 hake 15–40 cm long were tagged and released on the inshore fishing grounds during spring 2006. The overall recapture rate was 6.5% and times-at-liberty ranged from 1 to 717 d. Growth rate in hake varied with size and sex. The estimated growth parameter (von Bertalanffy k) was estimated as double previously published values based on size frequency distribution in the area. Compared with recent growth parameters derived from the tagging experiments in the Bay of Biscay, k was estimated to be slightly lower in the Gulf of Lions. With this faster...

Manuel des protocoles de campagne halieutique. Campagnes de surveillance de la pêche côtière des crustacés du site de Flamanville CRUSTAFLAM ArchiMer
Schlaich, Ivan; Miossec, Dominique.
Fishery and ecological studies have been carried out by Ifremer as part of the environnement monitoring of the nuclear power plant of Flamanville ( programme supported by "Electricité de France"). Their aim is to follow the natural fluctuations of the major species in the previous years and evaluate the impact of the power plant on the local fishery from the moment it has begun to operate. This paper presents the data collected between 1977 and 2002 and the creation of a naturel reserve which induced a modification of the relative index calculation and the introduction of a precise lobster numbering in the reserve. These points are described here with the sampling methodology and the tagging technique used. The associated data base specification is given...

Photo-identification as a technique for recognition of individual fish: a test with the freshwater armored catfish Rineloricaria aequalicuspis Reis & Cardoso, 2001 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Dala-Corte,Renato B.; Moschetta,Júlia B.; Becker,Fernando G..
Abstract Photo-identification allows individual recognition of animal species based on natural marks, being an alternative to other more stressful artificial tagging/marking techniques. An increasing number of studies with different animal groups has shown that photo-identification can successfully be used in several situations, but its feasibility to study freshwater fishes is yet to be explored. We demonstrate the potential use of photo-identification for intraspecific recognition of individuals in the stream-dwelling loricariid Rineloricaria aequalicuspis . We tested photo-identification in laboratory and field conditions based on the interindividual variability in abdominal bony plates. Our test yielded high correct matches in both laboratory (100%)...

Revealing pelagic habitat use: the tagging of Pacific pelagics program ArchiMer
Block, Ba; Costa, Dp; Boehlert, Gw; Kochevar, Re.
Tagging of Pacific pelagics (TOPP) is a pilot program of the Census of marine life (CoML) that will lead to understanding of pelagic habitat use by marine vertebrates and large squid in the North Pacific. Taking a multispecies approach, the TOPP project will use a range of electronic tag technologies to put the distribution and behavior of pelagic organisms, in the context of the oceanography of the North Pacific. Tag-bearing animals will be used as autonomous ocean profilers to enhance sparse oceanographic observations for vast ocean regions. These autonomous ocean samplers will provide unprecedented coverage of the water column structure of the North Pacific. The temporal and spatial data generated by this project will provide an "organism-eye" view of...

Tagging bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean sea: challenge or mission: impossible? ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Since 2007, Ifremer together with the French Federation of Sport fishermen (FFPM) and Big Game Fishing Club France (BGFCF) have been carrying out a program of conventional and electronic tagging on bluefin tuna in the western Mediterranean Sea. 479 and 95 ICCAT “spaghetti” tags have been deployed by the FFPM recreational and sportive fishermen along the Mediterranean French coasts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. To date, not a single recapture has been registered. Ifremer together with BGFCF has deployed 11, 6 and 8 pop-up archival tags (PAT) offshore of Marseille in 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. Outputs were impaired by two main technical difficulties: premature detachment and low transmission rates in the Argos band over the Mediterranean. While...

Traits biologiques et exploitation du bar commun Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) dans les pêcheries françaises de la Manche et du golfe de Gascogne. ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon.
Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (Linné, 1758) is a fish of major interest in France and in the British Isles. It is the main target species for some anglers and a growing number of professional fishermen. In spite of this, the reproduction of sea bass in natural environment, the identification of its populations, as well as the fleet participating to and the level of its exploitation are poorly known. Thus, in the perspective of a future management of the bass fisheries, this thesis collected required data for the analysis of the sea bass resource in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. A first chapter describes to the principal biological and ecological characteristics of Dicentrarchus labrax. The five following chapters deal successively with: (i)...
