Assessing signatures of selection through variation in linkage disequilibrium between taurine and indicine cattle. Repositório Alice
O'BRIEN, A. M. P.; UTSUNOMIYA, Y. T.; MÉSZÁROS, G.; BICKHART, D. M.; LIU, G. E.; TASSEL, C. P. V.; SONSTEGARD, T. S.; SILVA, M. V. G. B.; GARCIA, J. F.; SÖLKNER, J..
Signatures of selection are regions in the genome that have been preferentially increased in frequency and fixed in a population because of their functional importance in specific processes. These regions can be detected because of their lower genetic variability and specific regional linkage disequilibrium (LD) patterns. By comparing the differences in regional LD variation between dairy and beef cattle types, and between indicine and taurine subspecies, we aim at finding signatures of selection for production and adaptation in cattle breeds. The VarLD method was applied to compare the LD variation in the autosomal genome between breeds, including Angus and Brown Swiss, representing taurine breeds, and Nelore and Gir, representing indicine breeds. The...

Hypotaurine and thiotaurine as indicators of sulfide exposure in bivalves and vestimentiferans from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps ArchiMer
Brand, G; Horak, R; Le Bris, Nadine; Goffredi, S; Carney, S; Govenar, B; Yancey, P.
Vesicomyid clams, vestimentiferans, and some bathymodiolin mussels from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps possess thiotrophic endosymbionts, high levels of hypotaurine and, in tissues with symbionts, thiotaurine. The latter, a product of hypotaurine and sulfide, may store and/or transport sulfide non-toxically, and the ratio to hypotaurine plus thiotauririe (Th/[H + Th]) may reflect an animal's sulfide exposure. To test this, we analyzed seep and vent animals with in situ sulfide measurements. Calyptogena kilmeri clams occur at high-sulfide seeps in Monterey Canyon, while C. (Vesicomya) pacifica clams occur at seeps with lower levels but take up and metabolize sulfide more effectively. From one seep where they co-occur, both had gill thiotaurine contents...

Impact of chronic administration of anabolic androgenic steroids and taurine on blood pressure in rats BJMBR
Roşca,A.E.; Stoian,I.; Badiu,C.; Gaman,L.; Popescu,B.O.; Iosif,L.; Mirica,R.; Tivig,I.C.; Stancu,C.S.; Căruntu,C.; Voiculescu,S.E.; Zăgrean,L..
Supraphysiological administration of anabolic androgenic steroids has been linked to increased blood pressure. The widely distributed amino acid taurine seems to be an effective depressor agent in drug-induced hypertension. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of chronic high dose administration of nandrolone decanoate (DECA) and taurine on blood pressure in rats and to verify the potentially involved mechanisms. The study was conducted in 4 groups of 8 adult male Wistar rats, aged 14 weeks, treated for 12 weeks with: DECA (A group); vehicle (C group); taurine (T group), or with both drugs (AT group). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured at the beginning of the study (SBP1), 2 (SBP2) and 3 months (SBP3) later. Plasma...

Modulatory effects of taurine on jejunal contractility BJMBR
Yao,Q.Y.; Chen,D.P.; Ye,D.M.; Diao,Y.P.; Lin,Y..
Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is widely distributed in animal tissues and has diverse pharmacological effects. However, the role of taurine in modulating smooth muscle contractility is still controversial. We propose that taurine (5-80 mM) can exert bidirectional modulation on the contractility of isolated rat jejunal segments. Different low and high contractile states were induced in isolated jejunal segments of rats to observe the effects of taurine and the associated mechanisms. Taurine induced stimulatory effects on the contractility of isolated rat jejunal segments at 3 different low contractile states, and inhibitory effects at 3 different high contractile states. Bidirectional modulation was not observed in the presence of verapamil or...

Protective Role of Melatonin and Taurine Against Carbamazepine-induced Toxicity in Freshly Isolated Rat Hepatocytes International Journal of Morphology
Eghbal,Mohammad Ali; Taziki,Shohreh; Sattari,Mohammad Reza.
Carbamazepine is widely used in a broad spectrum of psychiatric and neurological disorders. Idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity is a well-known adverse reaction associated with carbamazepine. Hepatotoxicity is rare, but a real concern when initiating therapy. It was found that oxidative stress is a potential mechanism for carbamazepine-induced hepatotoxicity. Present study evaluated the hepato protective role of taurine and melatonin against carbamazepine-induced hepatotoxicity. Hepatocytes were prepared by the method of collagenase enzyme perfusion via portal vein. Cells were treated with 400 µM carbamazepine, 1mM taurine, and 1mM melatonin. Cell death, reactive oxygen species formation, lipid peroxidation, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization were assessed...

Taurine has positive effects on bone metabolism. However, the effects of taurine on osteoblast apoptosis in vitro have not been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the activity of taurine on apoptosis of mouse osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. The data showed that 1, 5, 10, or 20 mM taurine resulted in 16.7, 34.2, 66.9, or 63.75% reduction of MC3T3-E1 cell apoptosis induced by the serum deprivation (serum-free α-MEM), respectively. Taurine (1, 5, or 10 mM) also reduced cytochrome c release and inhibited activation of caspase-3 and -9, which were measured using fluorogenic substrates for caspase-3/caspase-9, in serum-deprived MC3T3-E1 cells. Furthermore, taurine (10 mM) induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation in...

Taurine Reduces Heat Stress by Regulating the Expression of Heat Shock Proteins in Broilers Exposed to Chronic Heat Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Belal,SA; Kang,DR; Cho,ESR; Park,GH; Shim,KS.
ABSTRACT The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of taurine on heat stress by evaluating them RNA and protein expressions of HSP90, 70 and 60in Ross broilers. Birds were distributed in a control group (CO) reared at 24ºC, a heat-stress group (HS) maintained at 34°C (weeks 3-5) and not supplemented with taurine, and a heat-stress group (HST) maintained at 34°C (weeks 3-5) and supplemented with 0.1% taurine from 2 weeks of age. The final body weight was significantly higher in the HST group than in the HS group (p<0.05). The mRNA expression of all three genes in the liver and of HSP90 in the muscle were significantly lower in the HST than in the HS group (p<0.05). In the liver, the expression of HSP70 and HSP60 proteins was...
