Correlation between physiological parameters and thermal infrared emissions from free ranging cattle. Repositório Alice
ALVES, F. V.; KARVATTE JUNIOR, N.; MASTELARO, A. P.; MIYAGI, E. S.; MENEZES, G. R. de O.; OLIVEIRA, C. C.; BUNGENSTAB, D. J..
Thermally stressful environments may cause physiological and metabolic changes in farm animals, among these, a higher methane production by ruminants. In this context, the main thermoregulatory mechanism in homeothermic animals is an increase in surface temperature, although other physiological parameters such as heart and respiratory rates are also indicative of environmental heat stress (Hahn, 1985; Bouzida et al., 2009). Infrared thermography, a technique that detects thermal radiation emitted by an object, is a non-invasive alternative to evaluate body temperature of free ranging animals. Goal of this work was to correlate temperatures obtained by thermal imaging with physiological responses from grazing cattle in Central Brazil.

Silva,Tatiana P. N. da; Pandorfi,Héliton; Guiselini,Cristiane.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the energy balance of the poultry-shed system and its effect on broiler performance during the production cycle. The experimental design was completely random with sub-divided blocks. The blocks were composed of five different types of sheds and the sub-blocks of the evaluation times (00:00 h to 23:00 h), allowing an analysis of variance and a comparison between means with the Tukey test. There were no significant differences between the mean values of the exchanges of sensible, latent and total heat between the poultry sheds but the differences for the evaluation times were significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between sheds 1 and 4 for broiler productive performance regarding...

Relationship between physical attributes and heat stress in dairy cattle from different genetic groups. Repositório Alice
ALFONZO, E. P.; SILVA, M. V. G. B.; SANTOS, D. D. dos; STUMPF, M. T.; DALCIN, V. C.; KOLLING, G.; FISCHER, V.; McMANUS, C. M..
Dairy cattle raised under harsh conditions have to adapt and prevent heat stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate physical characteristics and their association with heat tolerance in different genetic groups of dairy cattle. Thickness of the skin and coat, length and number of hairs, body measurements, as well as physiological parameters and body temperatures by infrared thermography were determined in 19 Holstein and 19 Girolando (½ and ¾ Holstein) cows. The Holstein cattle were less tolerant to heat stress than Girolando (GH50 and GH75 Holstein), because of the difficulty in dissipating heat due to the larger body size, as well as thicker and longer hairs. The correlations between physical characteristics, physiological parameters, and...

Thermal efficiency of individual shelters for girolando calves in brazilian semi-arid regions REA
Almeida,Gledson L. P. de; Pandorfi,Héliton; Baptista,Fátima; Guiselini,Cristiane; Barnabé,Janice M. C.
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the thermal efficiency of roofs used on individual shelters during milk-feeding stage of Girolando calves. The research was conducted at a farm located in a dry region of Pernambuco state, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 27 Holstein × Gir dairy crossbred calves housed in shelters with three roofing materials (fibre cement tile, recycled tile, and thatched roofs). The recycled tiles and thatched roofs provided reductions of 18.7 and 14.6% in radiant thermal load, respectively. Regardless the roofing material, all animals increased their respiratory rate to maintain thermal equilibrium.

Thermographic assessment of saddles used in Mangalarga Marchador horses Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dantas,F.T.D.R.; Duarte,M.A.; Marins,J.C.B.; Fonseca,B.P.A..
ABSTRACT Poor saddle-fitting is one of the main causes of back pain in horses. Mangalarga Marchador is a popular breed in Brazil, being used mainly for pleasure riding and sports. This study aimed to thermographically assess saddles used in horses of this breed. Thermographic images were obtained from 18 saddles of animals from different categories during a Mangalarga Marchador National Exposition. The evaluation was based on three parameters: contact area symmetry, dorsal midline interaction and total skin contact area (25%, 50%, 75% or 100%). Contact area asymmetry was observed in 83.3% of saddles. Dorsal midline interaction was observed with the same frequency. Only 22.2% of saddles assessed in the present study had panels with contact areas greater...

Thermographic evaluation of exercise influence on the joints of the hind legs of healthy dogs MV&Z
Germano, Bruno; Navarro Alves de Souza, Alexandre; Maria Matera, Julia.
Many muscular contractions occur when an exercise is performed, transforming the chemical energy from food ingested into kinetic energy. No organism can achieve 100% efficiency in this process; the remaining is thus converted into thermic energy, generating heat that will be transported to superficial tissues and dissipated through the skin. Such energy release can be captured and measured by thermography, which registers infra-red emissions, indicating the body temperature. This study observed how the joints of the hind legs of healthy dogs thermally behave when submitted to different activities to evaluate how much each joint is required for the execution of the exercises. Twelve healthy dogs were submitted various activities: going up stairs, going down...
