Adaptive and plastic responses of Quercus petraea populations to climate across Europe ArchiMer
Saenz-romero, Cuauhtemoc; Lamy, Jean-baptiste; Ducousso, Alexis; Musch, Brigitte; Ehrenmann, Francois; Delzon, Sylvain; Cavers, Stephen; Chalupka, Wladyslaw; Dagdas, Said; Hansen, Jon Kehlet; Lee, Steve J.; Liesebach, Mirko; Rau, Hans-martin; Psomas, Achilleas; Schneck, Volker; Steiner, Wilfried; Zimmermann, Niklaus E.; Kremer, Antoine.
How temperate forests will respond to climate change is uncertain; projections range from severe decline to increased growth. We conducted field tests of sessile oak (Quercus petraea), a widespread keystone European forest tree species, including more than 150,000 trees sourced from 116 geographically diverse populations. The tests were planted on 23 field sites in six European countries, in order to expose them to a wide range of climates, including sites reflecting future warmer and drier climates. By assessing tree height and survival, our objectives were twofold: (1) to identify the source of differential population responses to climate (genetic differentiation due to past divergent climatic selection versus plastic responses to ongoing climate...

Branch whorls of juvenile Araucaria araucana (Molina) Koch: are they formed annually? RChHN
LUSK,CHRISTOPHER H.; LE-QUESNE,CARLOS.
The growth of Araucaria araucana, like that of many other conifers, is characterised by the production of a monopodial stem with branch whorls. However, the periodicity of whorl formation in this species has not been subjected to systematic study. We used growth ring counts to determine the frequency of whorl formation in sun- and shade-grown juvenile A. araucana in a montane forest in the Chilean coast range. Whorls were not annual in any of the 35 individuals studied, growth rings outnumbering whorls by a factor of 1.8 to 3.9. The mean interval between successive whorls was significantly shorter in sun-grown (2.1 yrs whorl -1) than in shade-grown trees (2.6 yrs whorl-1), suggesting a relationship with plant carbon balance. Mean distance between whorls...

Cost-benefit analysis of industrial and homemade dendrometer bands Acta Botanica
Carvalho,Fabrício Alvim; Felfili,Jeanine Maria.
Dendrometer bands are used to make repeated measurements of tree radial growth. Two types of dendrometers are used worldwide, the industrial and the homemade. Homemade dendrometers prevail in Brazilian forestry studies, but researchers have trouble constructing and installing them. An easier solution is to use industrial dendrometer bands, but they are not produced in Brazil and, therefore, are expensive and might not be appropriate for local environmental conditions. We analyzed trunk growth measurements each month (from February 2008 to January 2009) using both industrial (imported) and homemade (national components) dendrometer bands installed on 20 trees of Acacia tenuifolia in a seasonally dry forest on limestone outcrops in central Brazil....

BLAGITZ, M.; BOTOSSO, P. C.; BIANCHINI, E.; MEDRI, M. E..

Silvicultural performance of five forest species in the central Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
MACHADO,Murilo Rezende; CAMARA,Rodrigo; SAMPAIO,Paulo de Tarso Barbosa; FERRAZ,João Baptista Silva; PEREIRA,Marcos Gervasio.
ABSTRACT Planting of forest species of timber interest helps to reduce the deforestation pressure on the Amazon forest, promotes sustainable development of the producing region and generates ecological benefits. The objective of this work was to evaluate the survival rate and growth of four native (Swietenia macrophylla, Parkia decussata, Dipteryx odorata and Jacaranda copaia) and one exotic (Acacia mangium) species in monospecific plantations (spacing of 2 x 2 m) established on areas previously used for grazing, in Itacoatiara, State of Amazonas, Brazil. When the trees were four years old, we collected biometric data [height at 1.30 m (DBH, cm), crown projection area (CPA, m2), total height (Ht, m), commercial cylinder volume (Vcyl, m3 ha-1)], and...

Tree population and community dynamics in a Brazilian tropical semideciduous forest Rev. Bras. Bot.
Appolinário,Vivette; Oliveira Filho,Ary T.; Guilherme,Frederico A.G..
The dynamics of the tree community and 30 tree populations were examined in an area of tropical semideciduous forest located on the margin of the Rio Grande, SE Brazil, based on surveys done in 1990 and 1997 in three 0.18 ha plots. The main purpose was to assess whether variations in dynamics were related to topography and the effects of a catastrophic flood in 1992. Rates of mortality and recruitment of trees and gain and loss of basal area in two topographic sites, lower (flooded) and upper (non-flooded), were obtained. Projected trajectories of mean and accelerated growth in diameter were obtained for each species. In both topographic sites, mortality rates surpassed recruitment rates, gain rates of basal area surpassed loss rates, and size...

Tree species effects on soil properties and greenhouse gas fluxes in East-central Amazonia: comparison between Monoculture and Diverse Forest. Repositório Alice
VAN HAREN, J.; OLIVEIRA JUNIOR, R. C. de; BELDINI, P. T.; CAMARGO, P. B.; KELLER, M.; SALESKA, S..
Tropical plantations are considered a viable option to sequester carbon on abandoned agricultural lands, but implications of tree species selection for overall greenhouse gas budgets on plantations have been little studied. During three wet seasons, we investigated the influence of nine tree species on soil pH, temperature (ST), bulk density (BD), moisture content water filled pore space (WFPS), and greenhouse gas fluxes in diverse forest sites and monoculture plantation plots. All sites were on clay-rich soils of the Barreiras formation, in east-central Amazônia, Brazil. We found that ST and BD were 0.6°C and 0.2 g/cm3 higher in the plantation relative to the forest, and soil CH4, CO,2 and N2O fluxes were, respectively, 38, 12, 62, percent lower in the...

Vegetative responses to temperature and photoperiod in saplings of brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam., Leguminosae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Rondon,Josimara N.; Zaidan,Lilian B.P.; Domingos,Marisa; Barbedo,Claudio J.; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita de Cássia L..
Caesalpinia echinata Lam. (brazilwood) is an endangered tree species occurring along the eastern coast of Brazil from latitudes 5°56´S to 22°56´S. With such a range of distribution it is expected that temperature and daylength may affect plant development, which was examined in this study. One- and five-year-old saplings were grown under controlled photoperiods of 8 h, 12 h and 20 h, and in a greenhouse under natural light during 16 months. In another experiment, one-year-old saplings were cultivated for six months in a growth cabinet, with reduced maximum temperature, and in the greenhouse. Leaf number, stem height and stem diameter at the soil surface were evaluated every two months (experiment 1) or every month (experiment 2). In experiment 1, no...

[[abstract]]In order to evaluated the effects of different species of rootstocks on fruit production of ‘Murcott’ tangor. Scions of ‘Murcott’ tangor were grafted on one year old seedlings of eight species of rootstocks and planted in the Chia-Yi Agricultural Experiment Station and two sites at Gu-Keng, Yunlin County. Tree growth, yield and fruit quality were investigated at the sixth and seventh year after transplanting. Accumulated yields of healthy plants were high on rough lemon and ‘Rangpur’ lime, intermediate on trifoliate, ‘Swingle’ citrumelo and ‘Troyer’ citrange, low on sour orange and Sunki. The fruit qualities were similar among most combination of the ‘Murcott’ tangor and rootstocks species. Total soluble solids and acid contents were high from...
