A Review of the British Indian Ocean Territory Fisheries Conservation and Management Zone Tuna Fishery, 1991 - 1995 OceanDocs

This paper presents a review of the tuna fishery within the 200-mile Fisheries Conservation and Management Zone (FCMZ) of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) (Chagos Archipelago), over the period 1991 to 1995. Particular emphasis is placed on the most recent fishing seasons 1993-1994 and 1994-1995. Fishing inside the BIOT FCMZ has been dominated by distant-water fishing nations. Longliners from Japan, Korea and Taiwan have fished in the area around the Chagos Archipelago for many years. Purseseine vessels have operated in the area since the early 1980s. A review of currently available literature conceming interactions between tuna purse-seines and dolphins outside the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) does not indicate any large, sustained, or widespread practice of setting purse seine nets around cetaceans for the purpose of catching tuna in any oceanic area other than in the ETP. While a number of individual reports exist of purse-seine sets made on cetaceans during the process of fishing for tuna in areas other than the ETP, there is no quantitative or even anecdotal indication that large-scale sustained directed fishing on cetaceans during tuna purse-seining occurs anywhere other than in the ETP. An overview of the FADs fishery in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Análisis de las capturas de atunes realizadas por dos buques pesqueros de Mar del Plata, Argentina, entre enero y abril de 2010 OceanDocs

Data obtained by observers on board of two fishing vessels during six trips carried out between January-April 2010 to catch tuna were analyzed. Thirty-four fishing days were completed and of the 59 trawls performed 37 turned out positive (with tuna catches). The fishing gear consisted of a purse seine net. Exploitation took place within the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone, between 36° S-39° S. The main landings occurred in March and consisted of slender tuna, Allothunnus fallai (57%), followed by albacore, Thunnus alalunga (28.5%), in January and bonito, Sarda sarda (14%), in April. Le modéle de production géréralisé est employé en utilisant des données améliorées opue FISM. L'analyse conclue que le stock d'albacore est fortement exploité à un niveau proche de ou légérement supérieure à la prise anuuelle équilibrée.. La production par par recrue de la pêcherie est probablement à un niveau élevé du fait de l'importance captures de gros albacores réalisés par les senneurs et les palangriers. The temporal evolution of the demographic structure of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, Linnaeus 1758) and of the little tuna (Euthynnus alletteratus, Rafinesque 1810) by the Tunisian traps of Sidi Daoud and Monastir is studied during 3 periods (1979-1983; 1988-1992 and 1993-1997). This survey showed the two points of passive capture landing draw the bluefin tuna from two populations of different composition. The tuna purse seine fishery based in Seychelles is analysed using data collected by observers on board French, Spanish, Japanese and Soviet vessels. From 1986 to 1989, diffferent types of data were recorded such as meteorolical and oceanographic parameters, aspects and sizes of schools sighted, seiner activities, fishing characteristics (catch, yield, duration of fishing sets). Reliability of observers data with respect to catches is assessed by comparison with log data from French purse seiners.

Strengthening tuna management is one of the primary tasks for the new Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). Stock assessment and the prediction of the dynamics of the tuna resources will become increasingly important research topics because they provide the basic information for the management decision process. Under these circumstances, this paper attempts to develop the stock analyses and prediction techniques using neural networks. As a first step and as a test study, analyses and predictions of catch rates of the Japanese yellowfin tuna longline fisheries are attempted.

Analysis of Tag Recoveries in Mauritius (1988-1993) and Presentation of Codification Procedure in Use OceanDocs

Tagging is considered an excellent tool for estimating the importance of interactions and competition between fisheries as well as to study tuna stocks and migrations. The Regional Tuna Project of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) conducted five tagging cruises in the western Indian Ocean, during which 955 fishes were tagged. Out of the total number tagged 15 were recaptured. Tuna tagging in the Indian Ocean was also undertaken by the Indo- Pacific Tuna Programme and by the Japanese National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries. 39 tuna marked by these organisations were recovered in Mauritius. Both old and new information on the biology and ecology of Atlantic bluefin tuna have confronted scientists with research challenges: research needs to be connected to current stock-assessment and management issues. We review recent studies on habitat, migrations and population structure, stressing the importance of electronic tagging results in the modification of our perception of bluefin tuna population dynamics and behaviour. Biometric relationships and fattning rate of bluefin tuna "Thunnus thynnus thynnus" L. 1758 in Tunisian fish farm OceanDocs

An analysis of data from a Tunisian farm during the months of June to November of the year 2008 is presented. These data were broken down into two sets the first concern sampled fish while towing them to farm (wild set), the second set concern sampled specimen at the end of fattening process (fattening set). The wild group comprised specimens ranging from 90 to 276 cm fork length, and the fattened group included specimens from 105 to 310 сm. Juvenile proportion (Lf<130 сm) in fattened specimen (15.7%) was considerably smaller compared to the proportion in wild specimens (61,8%). For most fisheries, increasing the local production of pelagic fish is the main objective of Fish Aggregating Devices (fads). This does not rule out the existence of a larger-scale impact, especially on the migratory behaviour of fish. The analysis of data collected during 25 experimental fishing surveys around Martinique between 1995 and 1997 has led to the hypothesis that fads influence the migratory behaviour of young dolphinfish. Commercial tunas and billfishes (swordfish, marlins and sailfish) provide considerable catches and income in both developed and developing countries. These stocks vary in status from lightly exploited to rebuilding to severely depleted. Previous studies suggested that this variability could result from differences in life-history characteristics and economic incentives, but differences in exploitation histories and management measures also have a strong effect on current stock status. Une clé préliminaire âge taille et âge poids est présentée à partir d’un échantillonnage mené sur 212 espadon (Xiphias gladius L.) pêchés le long des côtes tunisiennes entre mars et septembre 2004. les tailles des poissons sont rangées de 60 cm à 173 cm, correspondant à des poids variant de 1,5 kg à 55 kg. L’analyse des coupes de la 2ème épine de la nageoire anale des espadons échantillonnés ont révélé que les âges sont rangés entre 0 et 5 années.

Evaluación de los rendimientos del bonito (Katsuwonus pelamis) con dos métodos de cocción OceanDocs

Los resultados de este estudio permitieron conocer que la temperatura de máxima transición endotérmica correspondiente a la desnaturalización de las proteínas presentes en el músculo del bonito (Katsuwonus pelamis) oscilaron alrededor de los 75 ºC, independientemente de la talla. A partir de esta temperatura se ensayaron dos métodos de cocción para el bonito antes de su enlatado; cocción en balsinas con agua hirviendo y cocción a vapor. Los resultados indicaron que la cocción en balsina posibilitó obtener mayores rendimientos (83,15 %) que en el horno de vapor (76,29 %). Resultados similares se obtuvieron durante la limpieza del filete cocido (47,62 % para la balsina y 34,69 % para el horno), debido a la menor deshidratación de la carne del pescado cocido...
