A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs

Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Se presentan las características hidroquímicas de las aguas de las Bahías Chile, Almirantazgo y Fildes, en las Islas del Archipiélago Shetland del Sur, en base a la distribución horizontal y vertical de los parámetros: Oxígeno disuelto, salinidad y micronutrientes inorgánicos (fosfato, nitrito, nitrato y silicato). En forma general, se observa aguas bién oxigenadas, con salinidad relativamente baja, especialmente en la capa superficial, parámetro influenciado por el aporte de aguas de deshielo de los glaciares cercanos. Igualmente alta concentración relativa de micronutrientes inorgánicos, con escasa estratificación de los mismos.

Dinoflagellate Cysts Records from Core Samples of Modern Marine Sediment at the Luoyuan Bay Mouth. OceanDocs

Thirty species of dinoflagellate cysts in 15 genus are identified from KMZK5 Core samples of recent marine sediment at the Luoyuan Bay mouth, Fujian. All of these dinoflagellate cysts are first recorded in the Luyuan Bay, 12 species of them are not distributing in the near sea area such as Sansha Bay and Minjiang estuary, including 6 kinds of toxic species, such as Alexandrium affine,A. minutum, A. tamarense, Gonyaulax spinifera, Gymnodinium catenatum and Scrippsiella trochoidea. The abundance and vertical distribution characterestics of the main and the toxic dinoflgellate cysts are also studied in the paper.

Distribución de clorofila a en el Estrecho Bransfield (Antártica) durante el verano austral de 1987-1988 OceanDocs

Se analiza la distribución horizontal y vertical de clorofila a proveniente de 23 estaciones con cuatro niveles de muestreo en el Estrecho Bransfiel durante el verano austral de 1987-1988. Se encontró que heterogeneidad en la distribución y ésta se relaciona con la temperatura superficial así como con los valores de oxígeno disuelto, determinando estrecha relación entre estos parámetros. Los valores elevados de pigmento se restringieron al norte del estrecho, donde la temperatura y oxígeno también fueron relativamente altos. Análisis clorofílico en bahías cerradas reportó también altos valores, siendo el mayor, el encontrado en Bahía Arthur en la Isla Anvers, al sur-oeste de Bransfiel.

Distribución de Clorofila-a frente a la costa ecuatoriana durante septiembre y diciembre de 1990 OceanDocs

Este trabajo describe la distribución tanto superficial como vertical de clorofila-a (Cl-a) durante los meses de septiembre y diciembre de 1990 y se discute la influencia de las condiciones oceanográficas sobre este pigmento fotosintético, como por ejemplo la presencia de una termoclima poco profunda, la posición del Frente Ecuatorial, así como la influencia de la escasez de precipitaciones pluviales sobre el estuario exterior del Golfo de Guayaquil. Todos estos factores favorecieron la presencia de valores estacionales relativamente altos de Cl-a exceptuando los valores bajos de la misma encontrados en el estuario exterior del Golfo de Guayaquil.

Abstract The vertical distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC), considered to be a key component of the carbon cycle, is still poorly understood in tropical highest mountain ecosystems such as the Andean paramo. The estimation of the SOC in the presence and absence of anthropic intervention, will help to define policies to mitigate CO2 emissions into the atmosphere from this ecosystem. Species composition, abundance and spatial distribution of microzooplancton (20-200 km)from the Río de la Plata Estuary, Argentina-Uruguay, SW Atlantic (36°S 56°W)were studied from samples collected during two oceanographic cruises at the end of austral spring (in 1999 and 2001)across a gradient from fluvial to coastal waters (200 km). Heterotrophic dinoflagellates, aloricate ciliates, tintinnids, radiolarians, rotifers and copepod nauplii were found. More than 110 taxa were registered, 35 were new records for the area. Ichthyoplankton was sampled in 9 exploratory cruises in the sea off Buenos Aires province (Argentina), Uruguay and Brazil, during the spawning peak of the anchovy in spring-early summer and mid-autumn. The most abundant speices in the ichthyoplankton was Engraulis anchoita, representing 88. of the eggs and 76. of the larvae collected in all the cruises. These percentages vary boath regionally and seasonally; as regards eggs, the lowest percentage (10. ) was found in January. The distribution of anchovy eggs and larvae, covered almost entirely the surveyed area, with the exception of hte region influenced by the River Plate estuary. Mid-water zooplankton profiles from the temperate ocean and partially landlocked seas. A re-evaluation of interoceanic differences ArchiMer

Differences in the vertical distribution of bathypelagic zooplankton in the open northeast Atlantic and in the partially landlocked Levantine and Red Seas were re-evaluated to provide an interoceanic comparison. The decrease in zooplankton abundance with depth was most pronounced in the Red Sea and least evident in the northeast Atlantic. The Levantine Sea showed intermediate characteristics. The data plotted on a semi-log scale against a linear change in depth revealed a reduced rate of decrease in the zooplankton concentration with depth in the deep bathypelagic zone of the northeast Atlantic and the Levantine Sea. El presente trabajo trata sobre la distribución de los foraminíferos planctónicos vivos en aguas superficiales del mar ecuatoriano, durante los periodos normales y anómalos del océano, ocurridos en determinadas épocas de los años 1971 a 1973 y 1974. El área de muestreo de mayor extensión comprende desde la costa hasta Long. 86°W entre Lat. 01°22'N y Lat. 03°16'S. The normal behavioral patterns of several fish species is altered during trawling affecting the fish spatial distribution. Sonar methods were carried out in this research work in order to study the reaction of reproductive concentrations of the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) during mid-water and bottom fishing trawls. Observations made from a trawl sonar mounted on the headrope of an ENGEL (35 m) bottom trawl, showed that this species concentrates at the lower-central sector of the net mouth. Acoustic data were recorded by means of a scientific echosounder, during a survey carried out with R/V Dr. E.L.Holmberg in the coastal region off Buenos Aires, Argentina. Data were obtained in correlation with bottom trawl stations, aiming at characterizing the echo recording of several coastal fish species. Echo recording of the following species could be identified: white croaker Micropogonias furnieri, striped weakfish Cynoscion striatus, horse mackerel Trachurus lathami and red porgy Sparus pagrus. Modelling the vertical distribution of fish eggs is important when assessing fish stocks with egg production methods and for monitoring the reproductive potential of fish populations. Fish eggs are passive particles and their vertical distribution is determined by a few parameters such as egg density, egg diameter, wind- and tide-induced turbulence, and vertical hydrographic structure. The shell of Peraclis valdiviae (Meisenheimer, 1905) from Banda Sea specimens proved to be of a slender Peraclis bispinosa-like type. The specimens showed a very shallow distribution in the Banda Sea due to relatively high deep-water temperatures and vertical mixing.

In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. Seasonal abundance and vertical distributions of macroplankton and micronekton in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

Based on monthly samplings over an entire year, variations of abundance, vertical distributions and diel vertical migrations are described in the 0-1000 m water column in a coastal area of the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea for the main pelagic invertebrates. Detailed results are given for 21 species of macrozooplankton and micronekton. Seasonal and inter-annual variability of bacterioplankton biomass at station Kerfix, off Kerguelen Islands, Antarctica ArchiMer

Between January 1992 and March 1995, the research project Kerfix undertook the first regular non-coastal multiyear acquisition of parameters related to the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean at a time series station located at 50degrees40'S-68degrees25'E, 110 km southwest of the Kerguelen Islands. I present here a general overview of the bacteriological data collected during this survey. Bacterioplankton biomass at Kerfix station was always significantly lower than in the direct vicinity of the Kerguelen Islands. Spatial and temporal scales of variability in phyto- and bacterioplankton abundance were investigated in a deep atoll lagoon (Ahe, French Polynesia), Ahe Lagoon showed a classical phytoplankton composition, but its picophytoplankton (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes) concentrations are higher than the mean for Polynesian atoll lagoons.
