Two apricot genotypes, 'Gonci magyarkajszi' and 'Preventa' were assayed at three ripening stages for flesh color indices (L*, a*, b*, C* and Hº), contents of total phenolics and vitamin C, and both water- and lipid-soluble antioxidant capacities (ferric reducing antioxidant power; 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity; total radical scavenging activity; and Photochem lipid-soluble antioxidant capacity) to compare their dynamics in the accumulation of antioxidant compounds and capacities through ripening. Antioxidant capacity of vitamin C in mouse liver and kidney tissues Biocell

In the present study, the antioxidant capacity of vitamin C was examined in the liver and the kidney tissues of mice with or without ciprofloxacin (CFX) treatment. The antioxidant capacity of the vitamin was evaluated in terms of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs). The experimental design was 15 days of water (control and CFX groups) or vitamin C (vitamin C and vitamin C plus CFX groups) in drinking water. One dose of CFX was injected, 15 minutes before sacrifice, in the corresponding mice. The initial nmol of lipid hydroperoxides/g of tissue were 137 ± 11 in the kidney and 145 ± 15 in the liver, and the nmol of TBARs were 13 ± 0.7 and 12 ± 0.6, respectively. La oxidación causada por patógenos es un problema de suma importancia en animales. Pollos mixtos, de un día de edad (Cobb 500, n=624) fueron asignados al azar a uno de seis tratamientos. Como testigo se utilizó una dieta base (T; 40 mg de VE kg-1 de alimento y 1.5% de ARG). El segundo tratamiento fue la dieta base + ARG (ARG; + 0.3%). Copao (Eulychnia acida Phil.) is an endemic arborescent cactus restricted mainly to the semi-arid Coquimbo Region (29°54'28" S, 71°15'15" W), Chile. The area of distribution is from sea level to 1200 m.a.s.l. The edible fruit called rumpa is generally round, with green or pink peel and small scales on its surface, showing wide variability in size and weight. The aim of this work was to characterize the rumpa harvested in January 2009 and 2010 in three sectors of Coquimbo Region to determine chemical and nutritional composition in three fractions: pulp with seeds, juice, and peel. The addition of chlorine constitutes an economical disinfection method for closed, soil-less systems. Three quantities of sodium hypochlorite (0.55, 5.5 and 11 ppm) were applied to closed, soil-less greenhouse- grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa), to study the effect on its production (fresh weight and dry matter) and some commercial and nutritional quality factors (phytotoxicity, Vitamin C, nitrates). Sodium hypochlorite was weekly added within the nutrient solution, and the chemical properties (pH, EC and chlorides) of the recycled solution were measured. Traditional medicinal use and ‘Western’ applications in the treatment of scurvy and obesity, the prevention of AIDS, and in contraception is reviewed. Experiences on importance of diet for shrimp postlarval quality OMA

This paper gives an overview of own experiences with respect to the impact of dietary conditions on the quality of postlarval penaeid shirmp. Direct nutrient-specific effects are documented for highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA), phosphatidyl choline (PC) and ascorbic acid (AA). Specific immunostimulants may also contribute to an improved stress resistance of the shrimp fry. Last, but not least, some emphasis is placed on the role of the microflora during the hatchery rearing, the possible reduction of bacteria in the live food adminstered, and the use of probionts through the diet.

Nutritional Contributions of Nonalcoholic Beverages to the U.S. Diet: 1998-2003 AgEcon

Using data from U.S. households over the period 1998 to 2003, we examine economic and demographic factors affecting per capita daily intake of calories, calcium, caffeine, and vitamin C derived from the consumption of nonalcoholic beverages. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of the USDA 2000 Dietary Guidelines in reducing such caloric and nutrient intake.

Optimization of dietary vitamin C in fish and crustacean larvae: a review OMA

HPLC techniques were adapted and standardized for quantification of ascorbic acid (AA) and its derivates in both diets and target organisms. To assess the dietary needs for AA at start of exogenous feeding, the AA content in the various live diets currently used in aquaculture (algae, rotifers, <i>Artemia</i> ) was analyzed. Application of techniques for boosting vitamin C using ascorbyl palmitate as the source enabled the transfer of elevated levels (up to 2,500 µg AA/g DW) of bioactive vitamin C. Reports of the last decade show that some types of food and spices included in the human diet, such as pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) can have a positive effect on human health. The Mexican pepper germplasm is poorly documented with regard to variety and the amount of phytochemical compounds that it contains. In the present study, the variation of phytochemical compounds was evaluated in nine fruit variants (morphotypes) of wild and cultivated pepper grown in Oaxaca. ANOVA detected significant differences among pepper morphotypes and ripeness stages of fruits; vitamin C, total phenols, flavonoids, P-carotene, coordinated chromatic of color, and capsaicinoids. The effect of HUFA and vitamin C-enriched rotifers on larval growth and survival of grouper (<i>Epinephelus suillus</i>) OMA

Newly-hatched grouper larvae were reared for 24 days at a density of 15 larvae.l<sup>-1</sup> in 250-l capacity cylindro-conical tanks filled with 200l seawater. Starting day 2, the larvae were given: <i>Chlorella</i>-fed rotifers (Chl-R) rotifers fed Culture Selco (INVE Aquaculture NV, Belgium) (CS-R), and rotifers fed Culture Selco and consequently enriched for 24h with 20% vitamin C (CSC-R). The rotifer density in the larval tanks was maintained at 15 rotifers.ml<sup>-1</sup>. The rotifer diet was supplemented with egg yolk until day 5. Each treatment had five replicates. Two examples of nutritional pathology related to vitamins E and C deficiencies ArchiMer

Symptoms recalling a nutritional pathology and more precisely a process of lipid peroxydation were observed during the last years in seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and other fishes cultured in tropical marine condition, Ocyurus chrysurus and Lutjanus analis . They included dark coloration, skin ulceration, lethargy, anorexy, emaciation. Histological examinations showed hepatic fatty degenerative lesions, pancreatitis, muscular degeneration and retinal atrophy. Additional vitamins E and C in the food suppressed that pathological symptoms.
