A framework for efficient wastewater treatment and recycling systems AgEcon

Use of un-treated/partially treated wastewater for irrigation in the dry countries of Asia and Africa and recycling of treated wastewater in the water scarce developed countries has become a common practice due to various reasons. While the lack of wastewater treatment to appropriate levels before use is a major problem in developing countries, the high cost of wastewater recycling is the major problem in developed countries. The current paper is part of a doctoral research and presents the conceptual framework for the research and the methodology that can be used to tackle the problems associated with wastewater recycling.

Abundance and species composition of planktonic Ciliophora from the wastewater discharge zone in the Bahía Blanca Estuary, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

The specific composition and abundance variation of the ciliate community from a wastewater discharge zone in the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina, were studied all throughout a year, from June 1995 to May 1996. The polluted area exhibited high values of particulate organic matter and nutrients, particularly phosphates. Aloricate ciliates were represented by 15 species belonging to the genera Strombidium Claparède & Lachmann, 1859; Strombidinopsis Kent, 1881; Cyrtostrombidium Lynn & Gilron, 1993; Strobilidium Schewiakoff, 1983; Lohmmanniella Leegaard, 1915 and Tontonia Fauré-Fremiet, 1914. Cassava wastewater (manipueira) treatment using a two-phase anaerobic biodigestor Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

A two-phase anaerobic biodigestor was employed in order to analyze methane production with different manipueira organic loading rates. The acidogenic phase was carried out in a batch process whereas the methanogenic in an up-flow anaerobic fixed bed reactor with continuous feeding. The organic loading rates varied from 0.33 up to 8.48g of Chemical Demand Oxygen (COD)/L.day. The highest content of methane, 80.9%, was obtained with organic loading rate of 0.33g and the lowest, 56.8%, with 8.48gCOD/L.d. The highest reduction of COD, 88.89%, was obtained with organic loading rate of 2.25g and the lowest, 54.95%, with 8.48gCOD/L.d. Changes in the sediment trace metal contamination after the commissioning of a municipal wastewater treatment plant in the Souss estuary (South Morocco) ArchiMer

Monthly samples of sediment were collected from the Souss estuary, to determine the changes which have occurred in the concentrations of ten metals between 2001 when the low estuary was receiving the wastewaters from Agadir city and 2003 after stopping the sewage dumping. The annual contents of Cu, Fe, Zn (in 2001) and those of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn (in 2003) showed significant correlations with those of Al, indicating that fluctuations of their concentrations were only due to those of the aluminosilicate fraction of the clayey sediment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the species composition and functional groups of ants in nonagricultural (NA) and in irrigated areas (S, seasonal irrigation; P, irrigation with well water; W, irrigation with wastewater) in an arid agricultural region in central Mexico, throughout 2005 and 2006. A total of 52,358 ants belonging to 6 subfamilies, 21 genera and 39 species was collected using pitfall traps. The species best represented in all plots were: Forelius pruinosus, Pheidole obtusospinosa, Monomorium minimum and Dorymyrmex spp. NA plots recorded the highest density of ants. Abstract: The application of pig slurry may have different influence on copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) dynamics in the soil compared with mineral fertilization. The aim of this research was to determine the different forms of Cu and Zn in soil and their uptake by bean plants in response to the application of mineral fertilizer and pig slurry (PS). The treatments were: mineral fertilizer (Cu and Zn oxides) and liquid pig slurry, at increasing rates (0/0, 1.7/6.0, 3.4/12.0 and 6.8/24.0 kg ha-1 Cu/Zn, respectively) applied in a Rhodic Kandiudox. Background CO2 emission, water pollution and petroleum shortage are the issues coming with the development of industry. A cost effective system was constructed to fix the CO2 in flue gas (15% CO2), remove nitrogen and phosphorus from manure wastewater and produce biofuels at the same time. The significant cultivation conditions were selected by Plackett-Burman design, and then optimized with central composite design. The limited access and the scarcity of good quality water for agriculture are some of the major problems faced in agricultural areas, particularly in arid and semiarid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of watermelon seedlings (cv. Crimson Sweet), irrigated with different concentrations of biosaline water of fish culture. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments, corresponding to biosaline water at different concentrations (0, 33, 50, 67 and 100%), and four replicates of 108 seedlings. Watermelon seeds were sown in plastic trays filled with commercial substrate and irrigated with different solutions of biosaline water. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a diversidade de herbáceas e de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares em sucessão à cultura do girassol irrigado com água produzida (AP). As plantas de girassol, durante três ciclos sucessivos, receberam lâminas adequadas de água produzida obtida por simples filtração (APF), tratada por osmose reversa (APO), e o tratamento controle recebeu água do subsolo, captada do aquífero Açu (ACA). In the context of continuous droughts, the search for alternative water sources and increasing environmental restrictions on discharge of treated wastewater into natural water bodies, treated wastewater recycling offers a potential solution. In this paper the methods needed to assess the questions - to what extent treated wastewater can complement the existing water sources in different sectors and at what cost - are discussed? O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de 0, 20 e 40 Mg ha-1 de lodo de esgoto, na presença e ausência de fertilizante mineral (NPK) na fertilidade e nos teores de metais pesados de um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico, cultivado com cana-de-açúcar. Amostras de solo foram coletadas aos 146, 272 e 484 dias após o plantio da cultura de cana-de-açúcar e foram submetidas à análise de fertilidade pelo método do Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, incluindo a determinação do S, Cr, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb e Zn. O café cereja descascado - CD é um produto com maior valor de mercado e o seu processamento diminui os custos das operações de pós-colheita, contudo, gasta muita água e gera água residuária do café - ARC. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência do uso da água e a qualidade da bebida do café, com o reúso da ARC no processamento dos frutos do cafeeiro. Elimination of antibiotic multi-resistant salmonella typhimurium from swine waste water by microalgae-induced antibacterial mechanisms. Repositório Alice

Abstract: The effect of microalgae-based swine waste water treatment on the removal of antibiotic multi-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium was investigated. Photobioreactors (PBRs) containing diluted swine digestate with and without microalgae Scenedesmus spp. were inoculated with S. Typhimurium (108 Colony Forming Units per milliliters - CFU mL-1). Viable cells of S. Typhimurium were quantified over time by plate counts and qPCR amplification of the Salmonella invasion gene activator, hilA. In the absence of microalgae, S. Typhimurium concentrations increased 1.5 log cells mL-1 in 96 h. In the presence of microalgae, S. Typhimurium was completely eradicated within 48 h. Existe una planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales (PTAR) en el río Grande de Morelia que tiene una capacidad para 2.19 m3s-1, cuya agua tratada se mezcla con el agua del río proveniente de la presa y luego se conduce para irrigar las superficies de los módulos II, III y IV del Distrito de Riego 020 Morelia-Queréndaro, Michoacán. Los usuarios de estos módulos, tienen concesión para usar tanto el agua del río proveniente de la presa así como para usar el agua residual de la ciudad de Morelia. Impact of urban effluents on summer hypoxia in the highly turbid Gironde Estuary, applying a 3D model coupling hydrodynamics, sediment transport and biogeochemical processes ArchiMer

Estuaries are increasingly degraded due to coastal urban development and are prone to hypoxia problems. The macro-tidal Gironde Estuary is characterized by a highly concentrated turbidity maximum zone (TMZ). Field observations show that hypoxia occurs in summer in the TMZ at low river flow and a few days after the spring tide peak. In situ data highlight lower dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations around the city of Bordeaux, located in the upper estuary. Interactions between multiple factors limit the understanding of the processes controlling the dynamics of hypoxia.
