An assessment of crop water productivity in the Indus and Ganges River Basins: current status and scope for improvement AgEcon
Cai, Xueliang; Sharma, Bharat R.; Matin, Mir Abdul; Sharma, Devesh; Gunasinghe, Sarath.
The Indus and Ganges River Basin, being the most populous in the world, is under extreme pressure to sustain food security. Production resources including water are being exploited to various levels from underdevelopment to heavy overexploitation. This report provides a bird’s eye view of the basin and focuses on the nexus between agricultural production and water consumption, making it possible to pinpoint the areas with high/low water productivity and identify the factors behind this, which helps to promote informed decision making in light of environmental sustainability.

Development of deficit irrigation for maize crop under drip irrigation in samaru-nigeria CIGR Journal
Ezekiel, Oiganji.
In the past, outcome of any water management strategy could only be known after field experiment, in recent times, means of evaluating the implications of irrigation schedules without field experiment is fast gaining grounds with the use of models.  This research work present a scenarios studies for different developed irrigation scheduling options for a drip irrigated maize crop at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) irrigation farm Samaru-Nigeria during 2013 and 2014 cropping season using a computer-based model.  Aqua Crop was calibrated and validated with data obtained from the field, it was further used to generate scenario of different irrigation scheduling outcome. Grain and biomass yields, harvest index, seasonal evapotranspiration and...

Livestock and water interactions in mixed crop-livestock farming systems of Sub-Saharan Africa: Interventions for improved productivity AgEcon
Descheemaeker, Katrien; Amede, Tilahun; Haileslassie, Amare.
Focusing on mixed crop-livestock farming systems of sub-Saharan Africa, this review brings together the available knowledge in the various components of the livestock and water sectors. Through an analysis of livestock-water interactions, promising strategies and interventions to improve Livestock Water Productivity are proposed. In the biophysical domain, the numerous interventions relate to feed, water and animal management. These are interlinked with interventions in the socio-political-economic domain. The paper identifies critical research and development gaps in terms of methodologies for quantifying water productivity and integrating different scales, and also in terms of institutions and policies.

Productivity of water in agriculture: Farmers’ perceptions and practices AgEcon
Mahoo, Henry F.; Mkoga, Zakaria Juma; Kasele, Sydney Stephen; Igbadur, Henry E.; Hatibu, Nuhu; Rao, Karuturi P.C.; Lankford, Bruce A..
Stakeholders in agriculture and water related issues have different perceptions about the productivity of water. This is evident by the different definitions of productivity of water, though most of the definitions hinge around the benefits accrued from water use. The viewpoint of smallholder farmers’ regarding the productivity of water is important in order to promote the concept of productivity of water in a country like Tanzania. This is because 95 percent of the farmers are smallholders. This paper presents the farmers’ understanding of the productivity of water in the Mkoji sub-catchment (MSC) in the Ruaha River Basin in Tanzania. It also presents their practices aimed at increasing the productivity of water in the area. It reveals that the concept of...

FRANCO, R. A. M.; HERNANDEZ, F. B. T.; TEIXEIRA, A. H. de C.; LEIVAS, J. F.; COAGUILA, D. N.; NEALE, C. M..
The main goal of this research was to determine the spatial-temporal agro-ecological indicators of water productivity in watersheds with diferent types of land use and occupation, using Landsat 8 images, agro-meteorological stations and application of Monteithand SAFER (Simple Algorithm for Retrieving Evapotranspiration) models to estimate the production biomass (BIO) and the actual evapotranspiration (ET), respectively. Incident global solar radiation (RS↓) is observed seasonality of radiation during the year.

Water productivity of different land uses in watersheds assessed from satellite imagery Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper. Repositório Alice
FRANCO, R. A. M.; HERNANDEZ, F. B.; TEIXEIRA, A. H. de C..
Water productivity (WP) of various classes of soil usage from watersheds was estimated using the SAFER - Simple Algorithm For Evapotranspiration Retrieving - algorithm and the Monteith equation to estimate the parameters of biomass production (BIO). Monteith?s equation is used to quantify the absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and Actual Evapotranspiration (ET) was estimated with the SAFER algorithm. The objective of the research is to analyze the spatial-temporal water productivity in watersheds with different uses and soil occupation during the period from 1996 to 2010, in conditions of drought and using the Monteith model to estimate the production of BIO and using the SAFER model for ET. Results indicated an increase of 153.2% in ET...
