A discussion paper on challenges and proposals for advanced treatments for potabilization of wastewater in the food industry. Repositório Alice
LUIZ, D. B.; JOSÉ, H. J.; MOREIRA, R. F. P. M..
There are many studies and reviews on advanced processes to treat secondary wastewater from industries which also address the challenges and limitations to water reuse and the hygienic concerns especially in food industries. However, the challenges associated with treating a secondary wastewater to provide drinking water quality become clear when real wastewater is treated in batch and in pilot scale. The limitations are several, particularly in food industries. Hence, this review aims to present an overview and a discussion regarding the challenges and proposals related to the advanced treatment of food industry wastewater to provide drinking water quality, elucidating some experimental and theoretical questions surrounding such processes. Valuable...

A DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF WATER QUALITY POLICIES ON IRRIGATION INVESTMENT AND CROP CHOICE DECISIONS AgEcon
Wu, JunJie; Mapp, Harry P., Jr.; Bernardo, Daniel J..
A dynamic model is developed to analyze farmers' irrigation investment and crop choice decisions under alternative water quality protection policies. The model is applied to an empirical example in the Oklahoma High Plains. The choices of crops and irrigation systems and the resulting levels of irrigation, income, and nitrogen runoff and percolation are simulated over a ten-year period. An effluent tax on nitrogen runoff and percolation is shown to be effective in reducing nitrate pollution. The efficacy of cost sharing in adopting modern irrigation technologies and restrictions on irrigation water use depends on soil type. A tax on nitrogen use is shown to be the least effective policy.

A hydropedological approach to a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range, southeastern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Poggere,Giovana Clarice; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT: The Mantiqueira Range region is one of the most important headwaters in southeastern Brazil. In this context, the relationship between pedology and hydrology has been debated and analyzed in recent years, contributing to the creation of a multidisciplinary science call hydropedology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hydropedological properties of a mountainous Clayey Humic Dystrudept in the Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, comparing two land-uses, native forest and pasture. The hydraulic conductivity results demonstrated that native forest (MFO) has a strong influence on this parameter, offering conditions for movement of water in the soil that are more adequate in this profile than in pasture....

A mathematical model to estimate the volume of grey water of pesticide mixtures. Repositório Alice
PARAIBA, L. C.; PAZIANOTTO, R. A. A.; LUIZ, A. J. B.; MAIA, A. de H. N.; JONSSON, C. M..
Abstract: We propose a model to estimate the grey water footprint of crops by calculating the volume of water necessary to dilute pesticide mixtures reaching freshwaters. The model requires short-term toxicity data from aquatic organisms based on EC50 values, soil pesticide half-life and soil sorption coefficient values, and does not require maximum concentration limit acceptable in water. The lixiviation rate and runoff rate of each pesticide was estimated by attenuation factor and by Soilfug model, respectively. The usefulness of the proposed model was illustrated by estimating the volume of grey water required to dilute the 17 most widely used herbicides in sugarcane crops of Brazil. The grey water footprint corresponding to the recommended agronomic...

PARAIBA, L. C.; PAZIANOTTO, R. A. A.; LUIZ, A. J. B.; MAIA, A. de H. N.; JONSSON, C. M..
The usual method to calculate grey water footprint does not take into account the volume of water required to dilute concentrations of pesticide mixtures in freshwater and it also depends on maximum concentration limit acceptable in water. We propose a model to estimate the grey water footprint of crops by calculating the volume of water necessary to dilute pesticide mixtures reaching freshwaters. The model requires short-term toxicity data from aquatic organisms based on EC50 values, soil pesticide half-life and soil sorption coefficient values, and does not require maximum concentration limit acceptable in water. A Watershed-Based Economic Model of Alternative Management Practices in Southern Agricultural Systems AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Hite, Diane; Intarapapong, Walaiporn; Susanto, Dwi.
We investigated the environmental impacts of alternative cultural practices within a watershed under different water quality standards. We used experimental data on nutrient runoff to determine the optimal amount of broiler litter application in hay production in Louisiana. To compensate for the lack of experimental data, we used biophysical simulation models to find the optimal combination of agricultural best-management practices in a watershed in Mississippi. The results indicated that stricter environmental standards lower total profit potential and litter utilization.

ACCOUNTING FOR SPATIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WATERSHEDS IN EVALUATING WATER POLLUTION ABATEMENT POLICIES AgEcon
Qiu, Zeyuan; Prato, Anthony A..
This study evaluates three agricultural nonpoint pollution abatement policies: regulating the spatial pattern of agricultural activities, ambient tax, and abatement tax/subsidy. All three policies incorporate spatial characteristics of agricultural emission loading and movement for an agricultural watershed in the Midwest. The effects of spatial variation in natural conditions and landscape features on agricultural emissions and crop yield are evaluated using a newly developed biophysical simulation model and experimental data. While the policies are equally cost effective in reducing agricultural nonpoint source pollution, their implementation feasibility is quite different.

Gilmour, Alistair; Macquarie University; agilmour@gse.mq.edu.au; Walkerden, Greg; Wyong Shire Council; gregw@acay.com.au; Scandol, James; University of Sydney; jscandol@bio.usyd.edu.au.
Our group at Macquarie University has run three adaptive management projects in New South Wales, Australia. Their objectives were: (1) to evaluate water cycle management strategies to minimize impacts of urban development on water quality in the Hawkesbury-Nepean basin; (2) to evaluate development planning policies to minimize water quality impacts on a series of coastal lakes; and (3) to carry out a preliminary assessment of the potential impacts of greater recreational use of Sydney water catchments. These projects are examined to evaluate the contribution of the adaptive management approach to water cycle management on the urban fringe in New South Wales. The role of the adaptive management approach in education, as a negotiation process, and in policy...

Aeromonas presence in drinking water from collective reservoirs and wells in peri-urban area in Brazil BJM
Razzolini,Maria Tereza Pepe; Günther,Wanda Maria Risso; Martone-Rocha,Solange; Luca,Heloísa Duarte de; Cardoso,Maria Regina Alves.
Aeromonas genus is considered an emerging pathogen and its presence in drinking water supplies is a reason to public health concern. This study investigated the occurrence of Aeromonas in samples from collective reservoirs and wells used as drinking water sources in a peri-urban area. A total of 35 water samples were collected from collective reservoirs and 32 from wells bimonthly, from September 2007 to September 2008. Aeromonas spp determination was carried out using a Multiple-Tube Technique. Samples were inoculated into alkaline peptone water and the superficial film formed was transferred to blood agar plates amended with ampicillin. Typical Aeromonas colonies were submitted to a biochemical screening and then to biochemical tests for species...
