A framework for efficient wastewater treatment and recycling systems AgEcon

Use of un-treated/partially treated wastewater for irrigation in the dry countries of Asia and Africa and recycling of treated wastewater in the water scarce developed countries has become a common practice due to various reasons. While the lack of wastewater treatment to appropriate levels before use is a major problem in developing countries, the high cost of wastewater recycling is the major problem in developed countries. The current paper is part of a doctoral research and presents the conceptual framework for the research and the methodology that can be used to tackle the problems associated with wastewater recycling.

In the last years sanitation companies have restrained their investments, not just due to the fact that the necessary resources of the sector exceed by far the classic possibilities of the national budgets financing, but also due to the fact that the traditional solution of external financings have their restrictions. It is also observed that the charges of tariffs, not considering the cost of the services done, have caused imbalances which also represent subsidized allocation of resources, mainly to private sector. Aquaponics is a science that integrates animal aquatic production with vegetable culture in recirculating water systems. The performance of an aquaponics system using constructed semi-dry wetland with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) planted on treating wastewater of culture of shrimpMacrobrachiumamazonicumwas evaluated.Eachaquaponics module consisted in four culture tanks (1 m3 tank?1), conical sedimentation tank (0.1 m3), circular holding tank (0.2 m3), and constructed semi-dry wetland (0.2 m×1.0 m×4.0 m). This study investigated the effects of irrigation using treated sewage effluent (TSE) combined with nitrogen (N) fertilization on the productivity and quality of bermudagrass, and on its economic feasibility under tropical conditions. The treatments employed were SI ? no irrigation and no fertilization; A100 (control) ? irrigation with potable water plus 520 kg N ha&#8722;1 year&#8722;1 provided as NH4NO3; E0, E33, E66, and E100: irrigation with treated sewage effluent plus 0, 172, 343 and 520 kg N ha&#8722;1 year&#8722;1 as NH4NO3, respectively. Farming communities in water-scarce regions increasingly practice the use of urban wastewater in agriculture. Untreated urban wastewater is generally considered unacceptable for direct use because of potential health risks. However, in many parts of the world, poor farmers in peri-urban areas use untreated wastewater. This situation is considered likely to continue even in the foreseeable future due to the high investment cost associated with the installation of treatment facilities.
