13C/12C ratios in marine invertebrates from reducing sediments: confirmation of nutritional importance of chemoautotrophic endosymbiotic bacteria Marine & Ocean Science

ABSTRACT: The carbon isotope composition (6l3C%0) of the tissues of benthic invertebrates usually ranges from - 16 to -20. In contrast we report that several common bivalve molluscs belonging to the superfamily Lucinacea and several small species of Pogonophora show much greater depletions, ranging from -23 to -31 in the bivalves and from -35 to -46 in the pogonophores. These bivalves and pogonophores live in reducing sediments where the concentration of dissolved sulphide is low, usually < 1 PM. The gills of the bivalves and the trophosome tissue of the pogonophores contain intracellular or sub-cuticular bacteria. 18O studies on recharge of phreatic aquifers and groundwater flow-paths of mixing in the Delhi area Eprints@IARI

Widespread decline in the groundwater level and growth of salinization are the critical factors controlling future groundwater quality and availability in the Delhi area. S180 and salinity data have been integrated for studying recharge conditions of phreatic aquifers and tracing the flowpaths of groundwater mixing. Wide range (-2.8%0 to -8.6%) and spatial inhomogeneity of 6180 in groundwater indicate that the aquifer is characterized by a slow process of natural mixing of groundwater in its lateral extent. There is infiltration of river water to the groundwater, in addition to the recharge from rainfall. Xanthones are a class of oxygen-containing heterocyclic compounds widely distributed in nature. The natural derivatives can present different substitutions in the xanthone core that include hydroxyl, methoxyl, prenyl and glycosyl groups. The inclusion of aryl groups has only been reported for a few synthetic derivatives, the 2,3-diaryl moiety being recently introduced by our group. Xanthones are endowed with a broad spectrum of biological activities, many of them related to their antioxidant ability, including the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), as well as metal chelating effects. 2-Styrylchromones as novel inhibitors of xanthine oxidase. A structure-activity study IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition produced by some synthetic 2-styrylchromones. Ten polyhydroxylated derivatives with several substitution patterns were synthesised, and these and a positive control, allopurinol, were tested for their effects on XO activity by measuring the formation of uric acid from xanthine. The synthesised 2-styrylchromones inhibited xanthine oxidase in a concentration-dependent and non-competitive manner. Some IC50 values found were as low as 0.55mM, which, by comparison with the IC50 found for allopurinol (5.43 mM), indicates promising new inhibitors. 2-Styrylchromones are a small group of naturally occurring chromones, vinylogues of flavones (2-phenylchromones). Natural and synthetic 2-styrylchromones have been tested in different biological systems, showing activities with potential therapeutic applications. In particular, the potential and hitherto understudied antioxidant behavior of these compounds has been raised as a matter of interest. A 31P NMR study of phosphate levels in roots of ectomycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal Castanea sativa IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

31 P-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was used to assess phosphate distribution in ectomycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal roots of Castanea sativa Mill. as well as in the mycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius in order to gain insight into phosphate trafficking in these systems. The fungus P. tinctorius accumulated high levels of polyphosphates during the rapid phase of growth. Mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal roots accumulate orthophosphate. Only mycorrhizal roots presented polyphosphates. The content in polyphosphates increased along the 3 months of mycorrhiza formation. In mycorrhizal roots of plants cultured under axenic conditions, the orthophosphate pool decreased along the culture time. In nonmycorrhizal roots the decrease in the orthophosphate content...

The water resources in the Buffer Zone of a Conservation Unit of the Atlantic Rain Forest is important to the quality of life of the community that leaves in the border zone of this unit. The planning of occupation of the Buffer Zone must consider not only all elements of ecological interest of the Conservation Unit, but also it must necessarily focus on measures to preserve and restore the vegetation cover of humid areas for the maintenance of the balance between natural environment sustainability and human use.

A transferência de embriões (TE) já vem sendo utilizada em eqüinos há pelo menos duas décadas, sempre a partir de ovulação simples. Para aumentar a eficiência reprodutiva, este estudo avaliou a bipartição embrionária como uma alternativa para melhorar os índices de gestação na transferência de embriões em eqüinos. Foram utilizadas 21 éguas de diferentes padrões raciais, com idade variando entre 4 e 15 anos de idade, pesando entre 270 a 480kg. A partir da identificação do cio (rufiação), os animais foram monitorados através de exames ultra-sonográficos trans-retais até o momento da ovulação, sendo as receptoras, uma vez ao dia e as doadoras três vezes ao dia.
