A dynamic approach of forest owner self-insurance behavior in risky forest management: saving versus sylvicultural practices Inra
Brunette, M.; Couture, S.; Langlais, E.; SCSE, Société Canadienne de Science Économique (CAN); EALE, European Association of Law and Economics (GBR); Geneva Association (CHE); AT.IN.E.R., Athens Institute for Education and Research, The Economics Research Unit (GRC).
The objective of this article is to study the forest owner’s coverage strategies in the presence of natural hazards. We develop a theoretical model which considers two periods. In this model, the private forest owner can either save a part of his/her income in order to take precautions against natural hazards or adopt sylvicultural practices. Thus we want to compare a financial prevention tool with a physical one. Our analysis also consider the non-profit services provided by the forest. We produce several comparative static analysis especially on initial wealth, on initial forest stock and on timber prices. We show that, under some assumptions, accumulation of savings and sylvicultural practices may be seen as perfectly substitutable for the forest...

A model of adaptive relationship between the entrepreneur and the bank Inra

A model of adaptive relationship between the entrepreneur and the bank : the case of French vineyards entrepreneurs Inra
Cadot, J.; Couderc, J.P.; AFFI, Association Française de Finance (FRA); AWBR, Academy of Wine Business Research (FRA).
Availability of funds is a critical question for new French vineyards entrepreneurs. Indeed, investment for grape growing, wine making and wine marketing, as compared to sales, is very large. As these new entrepreneurs free cash-flows stay rather low, their investment capacity can be strongly limited if they do not benefit from a tight relationship with their bankers. In this paper, we present the relationship between the bank and the entrepreneur as an adaptive relationship. We aim at encompassing the literature on corporate debt and investment, initiated by Myers (1977) and debt maturity and information asymmetry in the manner of Diamond (1991). In the model, we study the project value and the liquidity risks when the entrepreneur investment varies. As...

A textual analysis and scientometric mapping of the dynamic of knowledge in and around the IFSA community Inra
Barbier, M.; Batifol, V.; Farges, M..
This communication proposes to depict the dynamic of the conceptual area of IFSA, and to bring a support to a discussion about the future of the IFSA community. It presents the results of a textual and scientometric analysis of the descriptors and concepts of the IFSA community. A general view of the knowledge of the community is delivered on the basis of the data mining of the corpus built up with the communications of the 6 previous IFSA Symposia. The empirical study details the key concepts and domains of investigation and their dynamics throughout the previous Symposia. This work has been realized in relation with a group of experts of the IFSA scientific domain. In order to contextualize the scientific positioning of the IFSA community, this study...

Access to land, the production of strangers, and governmentality in Central Benin Inra
Le Meur, P.Y.; AEGIS, Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies (GBR).
Central Benin bears the hallmark of a long history of mobility (as a buffer area and a refuge between slave raiding polities until the late XIXth century). Since the 1930s-40s, the nexus of local social relations (and pathways to accumulation) is made of complex linkages between control over labour force, access to land and natural resources, and out- and in-migrations. This contribution will discuss the interplay between the various institutional forms in the co-production of the local government of people and resources.

Age-dependent biological characteristics of embryonal mass of maritime pine in relation to the embryogenic potential Inra
Klimaszewska, K.; Noceda, C.; Pelletier, G.; Label, P.; Rodriguez, R.; Lelu-Walter, M.A..
Somatic embryogenesis (SE) in conifers is at the base of nearly allbiotechnology products that potentially might be developedincluding transgenic trees. SE is a powerful tool for clonalpropagation that has opened avenues for deployment of superiorclonally replicated planting stock in forest plantations. Althoughthe SE process can be managed for high efficiency there are stillseveral problems that require better understanding of underlyingcauses. One phenomenon, which occurs after the long-termculture of embryogenic tissue, particularly of pines, is the loss ofability to produce mature somatic embryos and consequentlyplants. Such unproductive cultures must be replaced, which is bothexpensive and undesirable. In an attempt to get an insight into...

Agglomeration externalities and technical efficiency in pig production Inra
Larue, S.; Latruffe, L.; CNRS, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, GDR ASPE. Analyse des Phénomènes Spatiaux en Economie (FRA); NARSC, North American Regional Science Council (USA); GAPEM, Groupe d'Analyse de la Performance en Economie et Management (BEL); SFER, Société Française d'Economie Rurale (FRA).
The objective of the paper is to assess the effects of agglomeration on technical efficiency of French pig farms. The increasing concentration of pig production in western France is a typical example of how agglomeration externalities may have positive effects on farm performance in particular. However, negative externalities implied by concentration have lately appeared. They are due to increasing competition for land following the introduction of a law governing polluting activities according to which pig producers need to have a minimum area available where their manure can be spread. We use a two-stage method, where the first stage consists in calculating pig activity's efficiency scores with the non-parametric method Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA),...

Agricultural policy support and technical efficiency in French agriculture Inra
Desjeux, Y.; Latruffe, L.; iDEAs, International Data Envelopment Analysis Society (USA).
This paper investigates how the various changes in the policy supporting agriculture in the European Union, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and various types of subsidies, have affected farms’ technical efficiency in France between 1990 and 2006. Several efficiency scores are computed: using the Free Disposal Hull (FDH) method; using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) under constant (CRS) and variable returns to scale (VRS); scale efficiency scores calculated with DEA; and DEA technical efficiency scores corrected for bias both under CRS and VRS with the bootstrap method. We consider four periods: 1) 1990-1994 is the benchmark period; 2) 1995-1999 is the period where the effect of the first CAP reform is investigated 3) 2000-2005 represents the period...

Agricultural price seasonality and market failure: examining the net seller household and the net benefit ratio definitions Inra
Vergez, A.; EAAE, European Association of Agricultural Economists (NLD).
When the price of a food crop changes, the short term welfare variations of rural households is approximated thanks to the Net Benefit Ratio (NBR) defined by Deaton (1989). The NBR expression relies on a typology distinguishing between net sellers, net buyers and self sufficient households. We show that the typology’s criteria and the classic formula of NBR use i) produced and consumed quantities rather than real marketed volumes and ii) a unique price for selling and buying for all surveyed households. In this paper, we propose another definition of a net seller and a new NBR expression that allow to take into account market failures (MF) and price seasonality (PS), which are two very common features in developing countries. We used two sets of data (from...
