A comparative study of the dorval vessels of bees National Institute of Agronomic Research
Wille, Alvaro.
Two main types of dorsal vessels were found in the 101 species dissected, representing 61 genera and including most of the major groups of bees. In one type the dorsal vessel is straight and ruris dorsal to the gut; in the other type it makes an arch between the dorsal longitudinal muscles of the thorax, sometimes with a series of loops just behind the ascending portion. Intermediate types occur. Within any family or tribe in which both main types occur, that with the straight thoracic portion is always found in the primitive forms; and vessels with a series of loops are found only in the most specialized bees. An evolutionary trend is evident toward reduction of the posterior section of the dorsal vessel and its ostia. In the Meliponini, or stingless...

A conspectus of the genus Bhesa (Celastraceae) Naturalis
Hou, Ding.
In his Numerical List Wallich inserted four specific epithets in the genus Kurrimia, viz 4334 K. pulcherrima Wall., 4335 K. calophylla Wall., 4336 K. paniculata Wall., and later 7200 K.? macrophylla Wall. The latter one was provided with a question mark; it was a new combination for Itea macrophylla Wall. No generic or specific descriptions were provided, merely the indication that the name Kurrimia was named in honour of Kurrim Khan who had faithfully served the Calcutta Botanic Garden as its curator for four decades. A few years later Walker-Arnott described a genus Bhesa Ham. ex Arn. (Edinb. New Phil. J. 16, 1834, 315) for which he provided a full generic description and brief but clear diagnoses of two species, viz B. moja Ham. and B. paniculata Arn.,...

A farinha de Rami como sucedâneo da farinha de fêno da alfafa, na alimentação de pintos Anais da ESALQ
Torres,Alcides Di Paravicini; Medina,Julio Cesar.
The ramie leaf meal was used in a feeding trial, in comparison with alfalfa hay meal in the range of 5% of the ration. Each lot consisted of two pens of 45 White American chicks was raised in batteries for 6 weeks. From results of the analisis of variance the AA. concluded for the superiority of the ramie leaf meal (586,4 g) over the alfalfa hay meal (540,1 g) in the conditions of the experiment.

A lei de Mitscherlich aplicada a experimentos de adubação com vinhaça Anais da ESALQ
Gomes,Frederico Pimentel.
The author studies, with the aid of Mitscherlich's law, two experiments of sugar cane fertilization with vinasse. The first one, carried out in Piracicaba, State of S. Paulo, by ARRUDA, gave the following yields. No vinasse 47.0 tons/ha. 76.0 tons/ha. 250 c.m./ha. of vinasse 75.0 do. 112.0 do. 500 do. 90.0 do. 112.0 do. 1000 do. 98.0 do. 107.0 do. Data without NPK were appropriate for the fitting of the law, the equation of which was found to be: y = 100.8 [1 - 10 -0.00132 (x + 206) ], where y is measured in metric tons/hectare, and x in cubic meters/hectare. The optimum amount of vinasse to be used is given by the formula x* = 117.2 + 1 log w u , ______ ____ 0.00132 250 t being u the response to the standard dressing of 250 cubic meters/hectare of...

A Lithothamnion bank at Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
The part certain lime-secreting marine algae play in the building of coral reefs and in the formation of banks was discussed chiefly at the end of the last and in the beginnig of this century. At that time it was already known that extensive parts of the sublittoral zone of the Arctic sea were covered by a luxuriant growth of Lithothamnion species. Kjellman states in 1883 (p. 96) that along the northern coast of Norway Lithothamnion soriferum “covers large spaces of the bottom in great masses”, and that off the shores of Spitsbergen and Nova Zembla in 10 to 20 fathoms of water Lithothamnion glaciale “covers the bottom in deep layers for several miles, and altogether determines the general aspect of the vegetation wherever it occurs”, whereas Lithothamnion...

A Note on Protancylus P. & F. Sarasin Naturalis
Hubendick, Bengt.
In their account of the fresh water molluscs of Celebes P. & F. SARASIN (1898) described the genus Protancylus. They pointed out certain resemblances between Protancylus and Ancylus as well as between Protancylus and ”Miratesta, Isidora und Planorbis”. However, they did not present any conclusion regarding the systematic position of the group. In his famous handbook THIELE (1931) placed Protancylus in the family Ancylidae. Furthermore, he regarded Protancylus as congeneric with some of the main genera of the family, e.g. Burnupia, Ferrissia, and Gundlachia. In connection with extensive studies of the family Ancylidae I had to examine the morphology and systematic position of Protancylus. As a result the genus Protancylus proper proved to be distinct...

A poliploidia artificial na obtenção de melancia sem sementes Bragantia
Medina,Dixier M.; Prado,Olímpio T.; Mendes,A. J. T.; Roessing,Carlos.

Torres,Alcides Di Paravicini.
In a feeding trial cassava root meal was used as a substitute for wheat bran and wheat middling (mixed) in several ranges: 10, 15, 20 and 30% of a ration. Five groups of 32 seven day old Rhode I. Red chicks were used during 6 weeks of the trial. The results are shown in the Tables (Quadros) I, II and III. Table I shows an high mortality in R4, receiving 30% of cassava root meal and no wheat by product. It was observed a depression of the development of the chicks that was so much high as the proportion of the cassava meal increased in the ration consumed. The A. suggests cassava root meal might have an antagonistic factor acting as a "toxic", that he imagine could be corrected by a higher vitaminic and mineral proportion. This hipothesis must be...

A Survey of the Littoral Gastropoda of the Netherlands Antilles and other Caribbean Islands Naturalis
Coomans, H.E..
This brief survey is based on the material collected by Dr. P. Wagenaar Hummelinck in 1936/37, 1948/49, and 1955. Station numbers only are cited; they refer to the “Description of new localities” in Volume IV of this series (1953; marine habitats p. 56-77) and to a “Third list of localities” which will be published in a forthcoming volume. Other localities, which are not numbered, are, as a rule, briefly described in the text. Material assembled by a few other collectors has been added to Hummelinck’s collection. The names of the collectors are always mentioned, abbreviated as follows: Av.: R. Aveledo, Caracas Be.: J. G. van den Bergh, Aruba BL.: T. Blok, Curaçao Bo.: Mrs van den Bos, St Maarten Co.: R. M.
